What do you guys think of this team ?

Drafted for my money league last week, a league I have never won because I have always reached for stupid picks too early. This year I thought I was more disiplined and made sure I took risks at the right place (I think). Any opinions ? (Drafting from the 4th position, 12 team) R1) Shaun Alexander R2) Brian Westbrook (Didn't want him, but Dillon and Rudi Johnson were gone) R3) Tony Gonzalez (Took him too high, but Chad Johnson, Chris Brown and Kevin Jones went right before him) R4) Charles Rogers (Hopefully not another reach) R5) Chad Pennington R6) Justin McCareins R7) Baltimore (Overhyped, but all good receivers were gone) R8) Willis McGahee R9) Tatum Bell R10) Julius Jones (I never have good luck with rookie RBs, so I took two) R11) Rod Gardner R12) Kevin Johnson (Can't believe how late he's going, I'll probably find out why) R13) David Carr R14) Jason Hansen R15) John Carney I think I'm kind of weak on receivers, but I noticed that all the top guys were taken in the first three rounds (Moss, Harrison, Holt, Owens, Steve Smith, Joe Horn, Moulds, Santana Moss, Mason, Ward, Chad Johnson and Coles all gone in first three, too early I thought) JYJ :^)

JYJ-- Hmmm... interesting team. Quarterbacks- Average. Pennington and Carr both have potential. I actually like the Carr pick that late. Either one can be have very good games or sloppy games. Runningback-- I think something better work in your favor during the bye week. Alexander and Westbrook are quality starters. But you do not have a legit other starter. McGahee, Bell, and Jones are all #2 guys. Better hope some good fortune falls your way. WR-- I would say here is where your achilles heel lies. Rogers is a good pick. I think you took McCariens way too early. I would have grabbed a third RB at this position. McCariens is all hype at this point. Rod Gardner may end up as the #3 before the season is over.(McCants can pass him.) And finally, I can see why Kevin Johnson fell. He has upside, and you got him at the right spot in the draft. But remember waiting for Travis Taylor to bust out? Bottom line is he has Kyle Boller throwing to him. TE-- Gonzalez went early, but you can't argue with the production he gives. Def-- Baltimore. Best of the best. Ultimately, I think your team will be in the upper middle of the pack with a chance to compete. It is hard to say without seeing the other teams. If you play a FLEX player, you could be in a little trouble. If you play 2 RB and 2 WR, then you are OK. Your Defense and TE will be difference makers. In the meantime, I hope your back ups work out at RB. And remember, don't believe the hype when you draft next year. I think you bought into the hype with McGahee, Jones, Bell, and McCariens. You may not have any back ups if your starters go down. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Good points Diggler, I will certainly keep you guys posted on the fate of my team (upon which a sizeable amount of money and trash-talking depend). One thing though: Quote:| I think you bought into the hype with McGahee, Jones, Bell, and McCariens. |
| Yes I picked McCareins early (in the same round I could have got Plaxico Burress, Rod Smith, Peerless Price or Jimmy Smith, I wasn't interested in those guys). But do you also think McGahee, Jones and Bell in the 8th, 9th and 10th rounds was reaching ? That's pretty late in a 12 team draft, I think. JYJ :^)

Philly, I wouldn't say your team is 'shot', if you take Gonzalez in the third, although I totally agree with you that Heap in the 6th (which is where he went in our draft), is an exceedingly better value. The way I considered it was that I would rather have McCareins in the sixth then someone like Moulds, Horn Mason, Steve Smith or Darrell Jackson in the third. So you either end up with Steve Smith and Todd Heap or Tony Gonzalez and Justin McCareins. Depending on the performance of McCareins, that could be quite equivalent. I would have taken Chad Johnson, Holt or Owens instead, but they went right before that pick. JYJ :^)

| I've seen a couple teams manage to draft a decent team after taking the Gonzo-3rd route, but not too many. Also, McCareins is a bit of an unknown right now. He had a nice season in Tenn, but could he be this year's Peerless Price? Doubtful, but I don't know for sure. I do know that Steve Smith is money.

| Two things. Are you a Jet fan? A biased Jet fan? I do not understand how you could value McCareins over Rod Smith, Peerless Price or Jimmy Smith. All three of these guys are number one receivers on their teams. McCareins is the #2 guy behind Santana. And second, yes, I would agree that McGahee, Jones and Bell in the 8th, 9th and 10th rounds were value picks. Unfortunately that does not solve your problem of none of them starting. I would have rather had an Emmitt Smith, Tyrone Wheatly type. Jones of those three was the best value since he will get carries. No telling what McGahee and Bell will get.........

Quote: Joe Montana was money, Steve Smith is a good receiver (who is 5'9", I don't like short receivers) on a running team with a questionable QB throwing to him. He's had one good season, and now he's 'money' ? It's also interesting to note that McCareins scored 7 TD's with 47 catches last year, while Steve Smith scored just one more time, and took 88 catches to do it. Quote:| I do not understand how you could value McCareins over Rod Smith, Peerless Price or Jimmy Smith. |
| Justin McCarein's 7 TD's, as primarily a part-time player, exceed the TD total of Peerless Price and Rod Smith combined last season (3 a piece). Jimmy Smith is 35 years old, and he'll probably be as great as ever, but he is no guarentee. You guys could be right, we will see.
