Vikings taking WR @7, but not Mike Williams!!??

Bigtime rumors circulating in Minny that the Vikes love Troy Williamson, and may actually take him @7 if he's there! Actually, when he's there is a better way to say it as it's doubtful anyone is reaching past 7 to get him. Bears supposedly love this guy too. I think it's gotta be positioning, as Williamson just isn't a #7. But if the Vikings can't trade down, and are forced to pick at 7, they may like him enough to take him there!

| JYJ, do you say this because you are a) that high on Troy Williamson (how so?), b) that down on Mike Williams (why?), or c) somewhere in the middle? I would love to hear your take on all this in more detail.

I disagree heartily with that assessment. I think Williamson has gotten a big bump from his Combine and Pro Day numbers, particularly a very fast 40. I'm not sold on him being a first-round talent, let alone #7 overall. Mike Williams, on the other hand, can take over a game. I had him rated #1 amongst WRs last year when he tried to enter the draft (ahead of Larry Fitzgerald, Roy Williams, et. al.). I have Mike Williams rated higher than Braylon Edwards on my draft board this year. Troy Williamson is my 4th-rated WR behind Williams, Edwards, and Mark Clayton. I wouldn't be surprised to see Minnesota deliberate longer than 15 minutes for their #7 pick this year.

| Paritially both, I think Williamson has shown impressive progress over the last couple seasons. Granted, he's coming out early, but Williams obviously has missed an entire season. But to me, the big thing that separates Williamson and Williams is the size/speed comparison. Williamson to me is a potential big play wideout with ideal size, instincts and speed. Williams has great hands and jumping ability and could be a TD machine, eventually. Moreover, he should have little problem bullying around even NFL cornerbacks. The reason I don't particularly care for him, is that his lack of speed makes him someone that can be neutralized with the correct defense. For example, he was used a bunch on screens in college, how do you think that works out against NFL linebackers? He's potentially an oversized Cris Carter, and that's only if he works at it. By all accounts, he has the work ethic, but I can't see him doing much as a rookie, imo. btw Steg, congratulations on your acceptance to Hawaii.

| Ouch! Talkin about takin' a shot below the belt! As far as speed. TO has 4.56 speed and is a superstar. I don't buy the lack of speed argument. Guys with size like Williams and TO can get open in coverage, especially with Williams' ability to adjust and body control in the air. I'm with Philly, Williams is clearly the better WR. I'd take him in a heartbeat over Williamson. Another factor: How may Michigan WRs are even successful in the NFL? Here's a list drafted since 1982: Desmond Howard Derrick Alexander David Terrell Amani Toomer Greg McMurtry Marquise Walker John Kolesar Chris Calloway Paul Jokisch Mercury Hayes Tai Streets Anthony Carter Hardly a stellar list! AC was a nice WR for Minny, but really only had about 3-4 years. Toomer has been solid, and that's probably generous. It's nearly safe to say the rest are nothing better than NFL nobodies. Williams is the pick!

| It almost seems that Mike Williams is being characterized as slow. The guy runs a 4.56 forty. That's about the same speed as Braylon Edwards. Troy Williamson caught 13 TDs in his career at South Carolina. Mike Williams caught 30 in just two years at the other USC. Nearly all of Troy's TDs were long bombs against much slower corners. As for Mike running screen patterns against NFL LBs? Bring it on... he's bigger than most of them and faster than most of them. Sounds like a mismatch in his favor. | Imagine how much better Cris Carter would have been if he was an oversized Cris Carter! I think (depending on the team he lands with) that Mike Williams can put up double-digit TDs as a rookie.
