GRIDIRON GUARANTEE - Week 2
« on: Sep 15th, 2006, 9:57pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Gridiron Guarantee is a weekly feature where you get to show off your football knowledge and make a bold prediction concerning any game or player for the coming weekend.

The prediction can be game-related, fantasy-specific, or personal.

Make a bold prediction. Don't just say "Randy Moss will throw a fit this weekend." That's too easy. Predict something that will have everyone in awe when it actually happens. For example, "Oakland gets shut out for the second consecutive week and Randy Moss and Aaron Brooks get into a fistfight on the sidelines." Then come back here on Monday or Tuesday and give us all the "I told you so"s. If you're wrong, who will ever remember?

A week after the Rams shock the world by upsetting the heralded Denver Broncos, they return to reality with a LOSS to the Niners!

In a head to head game, David Carr will have more passing TDs than Peyton Manning.

I would not even make this post had not Philly been so bold above and stated 49's over Cardinals.

It's a lock the Cardinals win big over 49's, maybe by 14-17 points big.

the cardinals moved to arizona a few years ago.  and predicting the prior weeks outcome is not very bold at all.

Damon Huard will lead KC to a victory over  Denver,  putting up 300+ yards and 3 TD's in the process.

Let's not be ridiculous... I mean... I know this is fantasy that we deal in here, but these are supposed to be "Gridiron Guarantees"...

Anyway,...

...Jake Plummer bounces back in Week Two and throws for a minimum of THREE teeders and 300 yards!!!

I just got to get this out of my system...  I preface, though, that this does not apply to your call, Jeff, and I'll even go as far as to grant that maybe I'm just WAY out of tune here with making "long-shot-to-show" calls.  But, to me the beauty and utility of the "Gridiron Guarantee" lie NOT in finding one of the bizarrest (yet (hardly) "possible") things that could happen in a given week and predicting it.  Rather they lie in making bold (as you yourself put it) calls that can have efficacy either in fantasy or betting, for better or worse, right or wrong... and not just as an "I told you so" here on this thread.  I mean that's nice, too,... but... "eh".  Now, while the victory part of the KC-over-Denver prediction could have had an effect on a reasonable man's thinking process (when laying down a bet or perhaps choosing a team D/ST for the week), I mean NO one in their right mind should have even considered playing Damon Huard this week, and he even had a good game, mind you, but still terrible fantasy-wise.  I mean I was wrong regarding Plummer, but what I proposed was fathomable and could have influenced a fantasy footballer's and/or bettor's thinking... for better or WORSE, whereas, a "bold" (I'm proposing "over-the-top ridiculous") prediction about Damon Huard putting up 300 yards and 3 touchdowns affects nothing outside of this thread... or, at least, shouldn't.  You followin' me???  I mean,... again,... whatever... This thread in and of itself and saying "I told you so" just right here is just fine, and while, of course, you can quip back at me anyway you want (you're not being overly nasty to me or anything), doing so in the way you did just makes me want to clarify the spirit of my ribbing... and thinking... about this thread, and how I'm approaching it.

Steg... I guess I didn't see this thread as one that people should be looking to for their fantasy/betting insights. As it has been all along, and fairly clearly indicated by my weekly examples in the first post of each one of these threads (feel free to go back and look through the old ones too), this thread was designed for people to have fun and really go out on a limb with their predictions. It's one of those deals where every now and then even the blind squirrel finds a nut. We're all blind squirrels in this case. As for the title... I'm sorry to say that there are absolutely no guarantees in football.

I mean, ultimately, if you read (between) the lines of my post there, what I am saying is that it's a bit of a "Seinfeld" thread.  There's only but a general parameter.  It can be about/for whatever each person want's it to be.  I'm just telling you what it's about for me and how I am going to participate on it so as to put my comments "in context".  Now, if others agree/like the idea, so be it.  If not,... so be it (though, of course, implicit in my suggestion is that I think it is a better way to take this thread... up a notch).  I am just gonna do my thang and right now am lettin' people know where I'm comin' from and how to take "my shit". That's all.
