Holding Out Some Hope...

Steg made an interesting comment on another thread regarding Daunte Culpepper...

Quote:
If you are fantasy footballer still holding out hope for this guy, you are either FF-blind or you are an eternal optimist to the degree that you still see hope for an "upswinging" Marc Boerigter.

This leads to an interesting question... especially for the more veteran FFers around here.

Who are the guys who you were sure would become fantasy studs and you kept drafting them or protecting them, waiting for fantasy greatness?

For me, a couple guys come to mind right away.

Travis Henry. He played well as a rookie and then had the monster years in 2002 and 2003. I have to admit that I still hold out some hope for him ... if he can just get a chance.

Another guy was Lions WR Germane Crowell. He had that huge year in 1999 and I figured he was the next Herman Moore. Then the injuries struck, and I held out hope that he would regain his 1999 form. Never happened.

When I first started playing FF in 1998, Ravens WR Jermaine Lewis was a decent WR, but I also got points for returns (very favorable points - like 1 per 15 yards). Lewis was a good scorer in the previous year, so I grabbed him and he carried me to a 2nd place finish in my first ever year of FF. The following year (1999), I expected him to be my gravy train again. He wasn't, but I got lucky and had Germane Crowell (see above) that year and won the league anyway.

I really thought Jerry Porter was in for a break out season.  He has the talent and I've seen the guy play when Oakland was at St. Louis a couple years ago.  Showed great athletism crisp routes.  I thought he was destined for greatness...bad atttitude seems to have sidelined his future.

You got to play to get better...he is not playing and that could side line his career permanently.

I'd say Randy Moss.   He is a top 10-15 pick every year, and has not done anything to deserve it since 2004.  Even that year, he only had 49 recs (barely 1/2 his career avg at that time) though he managed 13 TDs.  Since then though, he's no more than a 5th rounder, yet he gets top 15-20 pick cred every draft.

For me the guy that first came to mind was Bubba Franks. He started out directly in Favres crosshairs and I just knew he was gonna be big for the next 5 or 6 years minimal. After 2 decent years he started slipping and now goes undrafted in most leagues. This was the first year that I actually did not draft him. I've always believed he would return to form like when Holmgren used him. I'm a slow learner!

For me, it has to be Joe Horn.  I have had him in my lineup every year for the last 4 years.  This is the first year he is actually riding my bench.  When I first drafted him (in the first round) in 2002 he was the man.  Then in 2003 he did o.k. but it was hit or miss, then he did great again in 2004 then it happened.  The dreaded hammy.  He has been washed up ever since.

But, damn it, this year, whats his excuse? Come on Joe help a brotha out.......please.....

Huh...  This is a GREAT thread...  I think I am just gonna post to it as players come to mind.  For now, given the "inspiration" of this thread, Marc Boerigter, who is definitely one of the guys I had held out hope for for longer than was really "reasonable", I am just going to list a couple...  Also from the Chiefs, there was Christian Okoye, a one-and-a-half-hit wonder (or something like that) before he pulled his disappearing act, and, along those lines, back in the day, there was Marion Butts after his "short run"... of success. And, speaking of the Chargers, some of yous may remember the I had for Moses Moreno (I even protected him in the GBRFL one year).  Then, there is Corey Bradford back when he was with Green Bay.  And, Germane Crowell, Phil, was a guy I was totally stuck on, too, man. ...

I just hope I'm not saying this about Michael Vick and Ron Dayne someday...

Anyway, I'll be revisiting this awesome thread... Good job, Phil, starting this one!

Allow me to go in the opposite direction for just one moment. A guy I held onto for what seemed like forever. A guy I was sure was gonna be a hit. A guy I saved every year . A guy who was always touted  as the next great ______. I waited and waited and there was always someone else stepping up in front of him. So after waiting for what seemed like forever I finally thought he was done .    Tatem Bell . That cock sucker turns in the the next Larry Johnson the second I cut him loose. Well, I guess I'll hang on to Mike Bell for the next 5 years then rescue his career by cutting him loose.

Be honest...  Come clean here, guys...  Who's still holding out hope on Edgerrin James (who finally may just have a good game this week, actually, but I'm talkin' BIGGER picture)?

This is the best I can do:  http://football28.myfantasyleague.com/2006/view_news_article?L=13471& ;ID=200610261611.  Anyway, as such, my Week 8 Gridiron Guarantee,... I just can't resist...

Wali Lundy will be out-performed by Ron Dayne even though he will get more than double the touches Dayne receives. The Texans will seal the win against Tennessee on a long touchdown run (30+ yds.) from Dayne late in the game. I TOO can't get any more specific than that!!!

...

Nobody's answered my question up there about Edge, though, yet, while I know there are still guys here holding out hope on him...

Not only I'm I holding out hope for edge, I'd love to have him in either of my keeper leagues. That offence will eventually go. Unfotunatly, by the demands of any owner who currently has him, Theyre holding out hope as well!

I was one of the dumbasses who thought Edge would have a good year.  I drafted in in the CBFL and have been screwed ever since.

As far as a player that I have been holding out hope for year after year after year is Kevan Barlow.  I had him BEFORE he became the back in San Fran.  Then when he was in the RBBC, then when he was the featured back, and then even got my hopes up when he was traded to the Jets.  UNBELIEVABLE how much time I wasted with this guy!!

I just traded for Edge in the GBRFL2. He wasn't the main target in the trade, but I'm happy to add him to the stable. I don't expect too much from him this year, but he's still got some treadlife on his tires.

And, now, after ALL these years of telling you how much of a scab this guy is (and you know I have), you've turned the tables and gone and traded this scab to me.  Your price was very fair and I have Washington,... but what I am most happy about with this trade is the knowledge that I helped put you out of your misery,... and, thus, extended my good "karma". I'm not expecting much, so...  Watch him blow up, right?

A brief glance at my keeper league rosters for this year reveals the following:

* Drew Bledsoe has been an anchor for me forever (and I mean "anchor" as in the kind you toss off a boat, not "anchor" as in the key to a franchise)

* Deshaun Foster has been with me in 2 leagues since he was a rookie, and I'm still waiting for the payoff.

* Derrick Mason always ends up on my roster somehow.

Now, in the recent past, I was a running gag in my keeper league as the guy who never gave up on Kordell Stewart...and then I had TY Detmer for several of his early years just waiting for his coming out party to start.

In the more distant past, I had Cody Carlson stashd away jusssssst waiting for the day when Warren Moon retired or moved on...and when Cody finally took over the Oiler reins I was more excited on opening day than any other season I can remember. (For you young'ns out there, Carlson's leg was snapped in half in the first 3 plays of that first game and we never heard of Cody ever again)
