I just wanted to say how much I thoroughly enjoy this site and say what a great job that Stegrock does here. I had a problem getting my picture in my profile up & Steve wasted no time in getting it up & running. The dedication is greatly appreciated and will turn this site into the #1 fantasy football site on the net. Great job!!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH, DW!  That kind of support is MUCH appreciated!

BUT, your post, DW, actually breaks our record for the "most ironic post," a title which was held by PA Outlaws up until now for a post he made on the "Gridiron Graduates" thread...

Along that line, so as to maintain your thorough enjoyment of the site and my appreciated dedication, get a load of what I am going to have to do!

Not a biggie, though, as you see, since we have "automatic move" notices!

I don't know how much control you have over that avatar on the left, Steg, but it seems to stretch (shrink) anything that is hosted elsewhere to the same 100x100 size.  I realize that there has to be a maximum size, but if there could be smaller pics that would be cool...

The one I have now looks really cool until it gets stretched on this site.

Or it just disappears altogether...    -- now it's back ...    weird stuff I tell ya...

Guys,

You gotta' live with that BUT PLEASE READ ON SO YOU GET ALL THE LOWDOWN, especially FFLA league members.  With all message-board programs, there can only be one programmed default "image size" for externally-hosted avatars, and there has to be a size restriction.  Think it through...  Otherwise, the tables and pages could go totally out of whack by someone's adding a HUGE/LONG picture!  Follow... ?  That is actually a problem that can be incurred in the "signature" area, but I can disallow images to be displayed in signatures and if anybody ever puts something of an inappropriate size in his/her signature, I would consider doing just that.  Anyway, back to the profile avatars, I have set the default size to what I would consider a fair 100X100.  I could make it smaller, then someone else's will be out of whack; make it bigger, same problem. This is just one of those things for which every single variable cannot be accounted.  It is something about which users have to be proactive.  When selecting a picture for your profile that is going to be externally hosted, try to first make sure that it looks acceptable to you if adjusted to 100X100.  Now, you may be thinking, "But, the avatars you provide, Steg, adjust to size...  What's up with that?  My pic is not too big!  Why can't you do the same thing for my pic?"  Firstly, all avatars in the avatar database are screeened and limited to an acceptable size.  Secondly, if it is in the avatar database, anyone can use it.  It can't just be for you.  Thirdly, I can't get into adding each and everyone's picture into our avatar database on my server.  That would get absurd and defeat the whole point of allowing externally-hosted, individualized/personalized avatars.  Also, in the long-run, it would potentially create a TON of work for me and be very heavy on my server.

Now, PA, do NOT get confused here with regards to your particular graphic.  It has not been added as an avatar anyone can use.  I have just, as a favor, put it on my server because it wasn't appearing half the time when it was being called from geocities.  But, when it did appear, make no mistakes, it looked exactly the same as it does now.

In conclusion, in short, if your particular graphic doesn't look good, choose again.  You are out of luck!  100X100 is a fair middle-ground size restriction.

One further note and question, especially for PA and anybody in a FFLA league, after seeing your use of Cirrinone's SBFFL button, PA, I have been considering just adding all the FFLA league buttons as avatars.  That way, as stated above, their size would be maintained when displayed, and, moreover, doing so would not be a big job for me at all.  I could do it in a jiffy.  Of course, then, anybody, in theory, could use them.  I am sure only respective league members would, though.  But,...  Well, first of all, would it be okay with you to do that, Jon?  If so, then do you guys think it is a good idea?  I kind of think so, but I'd really like to hear you guys out before making the final decision.

I hope that was all digested and understood.  I appreciate all of your anticipated cooperation. I am...

NOTE:  Post above has largely become moot!

Well, you guys push...  StegRock produces!  I (quickly , thank God, given the hour here) did some diggin' and found out how to disable the size restrictions.  I decided to disable height.  Disabling width would get dicey as it is the width of pics that would more so throw the pages out of whack.  So, width is still set at 100, a fair number.  NOW, if you think it was better at 100X100, tell me.  I mean a picture's width still defaults to 100 pixels, i.e. a picture is still going to get adjusted here somehow one way or another in all likelihood, and knowing my luck, you guys are going to think that things looked better overall the old way! I sifted through the site a little bit myself , and I think the new setting is an improvement.  Anyway, let me know your thoughts.  I am at your service and want to make this site something really special and the best it can be and that will only be achieved by help like this from you guys!  Thank you and continue keeping me on my toes!

This new change does not preclude adding the FFLA league logo buttons to "the Gridiron" avatars.  So, are there still any thoughts on that?  I am thinking more and more that it is a good idea.  It kind of brings the FFLA into "the Gridiron" fold more.  Jon, any problems with using your buttons here for that?

Well, now me goes to bed!

Great work Steg!  Restricting width is perfect!  At least that way, when it resizes automatically, it won't throw the dimensions out of whack.

I know my avatar now looks like it's supposed to.

There is still the opportunity for exploitation with pics (much like sigs) but that can be controlled by simple banning of the pic.

Here's the link to my button for FFFL if you're going to use them all...

You'll have to copy and paste the link into your browser to get it to show up--- geocities.com is BAH like that.

DONE!

They have been added as "FFLA_(league acronyms)_Cirrinone"!  I even credited you there, Jon.

They are a GREAT addition, bringing the FFLA more into the fold here.  I changed yours, PA, to the avatar SBFFL button and mine to the avatar GBRFL button so you guys could see how they look/work.

One IMPORTANT note, though, especially for Jon, but I suppose for anyone who has the know-how...  They look great and are great, BUT they are quite heavy ranging from 12 KB to 18 KB, and we know that our server does not need more battering.  Most avatars are no more than 1 KB.  That is because, potentially, every time a page is opened these graphics will be called.  The bigger the size, the more strain on the server!  Now, I do NOT think that they will be too heavy to keep as they are, BUT if there were any possibility of saving them as ".gif" files instead of ".jpg" files, which are typically heavier, that would be cool.  Regardless, they will remain as is as long as our server can handle them.  But,...

And, one last note, I also added "the Gridiron" button to the avatar database.  It was added as "the_Gridiron"!

I hope you all enjoy these improvements!  Thanks, again, Jon!  Be in touch, all!

WRONG!  I just figured out (by way of KJ 76's use of "the Gridiron Newsstand" graphic for his avatar) that NOW pictures are adjusted proportionally according to a ratio based on whichever setting (of the two, width or height) is set, in this case the width, i.e., the height of an externally-hosted graphic is adjusted according to the ratio of its width to our width setting of 100 pixels; e.g., the actual dimensions of "the Gridiron Newsstand" graphic are 150X60 ("width"X"height"), and it was adjusted to 100X40, i.e., it was reduced proportionally, its height was reduced proportionally, according to the ratio of the actual width of the graphic, 150 pixels, and the width setting, 100 pixels, making the height go from 60 pixels to 40 pixels, a 3:2 width-to-width/height-to-height pixel-to-pixel ratio.  Man, that is AWESOME!  Enjoy, fellaz!

P.S. (I think Philly might have noticed this based on his last post, which confused me when I first read it.)

That's exactly what I meant... By only restricting one dimension (width), you are not affecting the aspect ratio (i.e., 3:2 as you explained above).

Previously, if you used an externally hosted avatar, it had to be perfectly square (regardless of the size) for it to appear correctly on this website.  Now it doesn't have to be.
