What wins championships?

Defense and Leadership, but mostly Defense.

There is not one good example of an offense carrying a defense, but many of defenses carrying offenses.  So this is my challenge thread.  I'd like to challenge people to name SB winning teams that had poor defenses.  I can't think of one.

And will people STOP listing the Rams?  They had one of the best defenses in the league that year.  Carter lead the league with 17 sacks, and the Rams lead the league with 57 total sacks. They only allowed 15 pts per game, 3rd best in the league. For an example of team D ratings, check this site.

Does a faily good analysis, but doesn't account for yards given up or turnovers, but you get some whacky conclusions with those factored in (Like the Titans having a better rated D than the Ravens during their SB year).  I think with turnovers the were rated

So here's my challenge thread.  If you really think Superbowls are won with offense, I'd like to see some good examples.  Prove me wrong.

Steg:  If this is the wrong place for this, please move it, but I figured with it being the offseason it might be ok to put it here

I think you're wrong about the Rams.  The offense totally carried the defense in their prime.  The only reason the defensive rating (and sack) total was so high was because their offense came out smoking, giving them a 3 TD lead.  That meant that the other team could not run the ball and thus sacks.

As a Redskins fan, I remember the offense kinda carrying them to the championship, particularly in 1991.  Although the Bills did not win it all, their success was largely because of the high powered offense.

That being said, I do agree that defenses USUALLY win championships and get teams through tough playoff battles.

GREAT thread!  But, based on its topic, it is being moved to a different board, "the Sidelines", on which it fits better as per our board descriptions.  Thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation!

I don't think anyone will argue that "defense wins championships", that's why it's a cliché...

I can't think of any "bad" defensive teams that have won it all, but at the same time how many bad offensive teams have won it all? I'm sure there may be a few statistically, but I think it's safe to say that for the most part bad defensive or offensive teams don't win the Super Bowl.
