I'd rather take the approach that its 104 away from 1004.  (Somebody wrote an article commenting about round numbers in sports - it was hilarious, wish I remember where/who it was.  But just for instance, why is 500 Home Runs special but the 501st ordinary?).

Actually, when you think about it... 900 might be more important than 1000 if we look at it terms of round numbers.  The "9" in 900 is much more rounded than the "1" in 1000 or the "1" and "4" in 1004.
