Adrian Wilson -vs- Corey Chavous

Regarding this subject, I thought Adrian made huge strides this season under Denny Green.

I probably should've posted............

(see Randy Moss thread for more detail;  http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=58;a ction=display;num=1105912500on Jan 20th, 2005, 10:10am, Philly wrote:

the strong safety spot rather than a serious one.

I BEElieve this BEEcause; and although Chavous is the more "well-pronounced" SS of the two (making the 2003 pro-bowl after moving from CB to safety); Adrian is younger (by 3 years I BEElieve) and a better athlete than Corey (notice I didn't say better football player) and is still coming into his own at this point and SHOULD only get better - whereas Corey, IMO, is all that he is probably going to BEE right now, physically speaking.

However not to BEE disregarded by any means, Corey has outstanding instincts and work ethic and his football intelligence is 2nd to none. But his production was hindered this year by Minny's decision to only rush their linemen thus, making Chavous - who is not a great cover-guy - work mostly in a cover-2 scheme.

All in all, I expect Adrian, if he can improve on his consistency each yearas he did this season, to BEEcome the better safety if he hasn't done that already (big part of Arizona's improved "D" this year).

To put this in a nut-shell, Corey is a tweener safety/corner back and Adrian is a tweener safety/line backer  and in addition, Corey has the better instincts whereas, Adrian has my nod on better physical tools.

All that is said,I might BEE comparing apples to oranges in a minor sorta way.

I agree that it is difficult to compare the two and I initially reacted to your assertion that Wilson is a "serious" upgrade over Chavous.  Since you've backed off that, we really don't disagree on too much.

The two players really play different positions, although they are both strong safeties.  Chavous is more of a CB/SS (6-1 and 205) who is used primarily in pass coverage.  That's why he was able to grab 8 picks in 2003.  Those picks didn't come in 2004, but that doesn't mean his skills have diminished.  The guy is only 29 years old and still has plenty of football left in him.  Although I will grant you that he will probably not get better than he is/was already.

Adrian Wilson, at 6-3 and 225 is really called upon to help out in run support more than Chavous.  That's why he has significantly more tackles than Chavous.  Also, teams run a lot more on the Cards than they do on the Vikes.  I agree that Wilson is the better athlete and probably has more upside over the long-haul (next 5 years or so) than Chavous.

Chavous is more of a ball hawk than Adrian Wilson...Wilson gets more tackles.

I'd rather have the ball hawk.

In my league (tackle heavy) I'd take Wilson in a heartbeat over Chavous.

If we're talking fantasy, then I would certainly choose Wilson over Chavous, but the original context of the discussion was the players as NFL defensive players, not fantasy starters.  In an NFL context I would take Chavous in the short term because of his experience, intelligence, work ethic, character, and ability.  Not that Wilson is lacking in any of those areas, but I think that Chavous has some more intangibles that are important to winning football.

PS - This is one discussion I never anticipated I'd be having...

Your right Philster! We were basically talking NFL football as opposed to fantasy football in regards to Chavous & Adrian. But more specifically, I was referring to Minny's NEEDS as it relates to NFL football and their team defense.

They just don't have a LB that can tackle right now OR if I am missing something here - a LB that can tackle and make a DRIVE ALTERING DIFFERENCE when they do so.

Taking that into consideration, coupled with their mediocre pass rush , Adrian Wilson IMO would BEE an upgrade for the Minny Vikings over Chavous.

However, (yes, you knew there had to BEE a however ), if Minny is going to keep their safetys in cover-2 then, they might as well keep Chavous around cuz he is a very good player and better at coverage than Adrian is right now though, if you were to ask me if I saw Corey make any ballhawking plays that were to BEE remembered this year - I would have to say NO.

BarnaBEE, I couldn't agree with you more on the FF part of this conversation in that, hands down - and - in addition to your Giant's league, even in an IDP system that weights tackles & big plays as equal emphasis such as my league does - I would take Adrian over Chavous.

To comment on Dex's preference, for myself, it would really depend on what type of strong safety I wanted for my team or more specifically speaking, what type of defense I had to build around.
More of a ballhawk?; ie: basically just an extra free safety out there defending/intercepting passes and providing support over the top for his corner backs or more of the traditional SS in that, basically they are just an extra LB that imposes fear over the middle of the field in the passing lanes and can add significant run/blitz support in the trenches as well as cover the TE when needed.
