Any given Sunday......

It's a known fact.  Any given sunday, the worst team in the league, can pull off a win against the best team.  I'm assuming thats the reason why so many coaches are getting fired nowadays.

So many fans, owners, GM's think to themselves..."we coulda won that game"  or "if he woulda called this play we woulda won."  Which could be true. Any given sunday right?

How about something called the strength of schedule.  If you take a look at it.  It tells more things than people realize.  Lets take a look at the teams that made it to the playoffs this year...

Out of the 12 teams that made it to the playoffs this year, only one team actually hade a SOS percentage above .500. (Washington)

From the 20 teams that did not make the playoffs only 4 of the teams had a SOS below .500 (Vikes, Rams, Eagles, Dolphins) Two of these 4 teams are now looking for a new coach.  Which IMO is actually deserving with the schedules they had.

But you look at the other 5 teams that have fired their coaches (Raiders, Texans, Lions, Green Bay, New Orleans) which all teams avg. a .523 SOS.  It's not a coincedence that these teams sucked this year.  They all had a pretty rough schedule.

Dom Capers built the Texans.  Their still a relatively new franchise.  Yet, he gets the boot.  Not deserving IMO.
The Saints did Hasslet a favor.  Mike Sherman got the biggest with his ONLY losing season in 6 years, he gets the boot. WTF.

Did the Raiders not see what Norv did in Washinton?  He had one of the best teams in the league during his time there, and couldn't muster wins.  What made Al think that Norv could do better with his team? A little more deserving. And Mooch gettn the boot mid-season.  Damn, I guess its all his fault that Joey Harringtion sucks.  And Millen wasted all of his picks on WR's to try and compensate for their illegitemate QB.

The NFL is very cut-throat nowdays.  Who gives a shit about building a team to become a dynasty.  Owners just build a team that can make them money.  As long as they can fill the stadium buy their jerseys, thats all they care about.  And unfortunately, that is synonnomous with winning.  I don't think it would be that way if they actually CARED about their team instead of their pocketbooks.

With Free Agency the way it is today, every single team has a chance to win.  Will firing and hiring a new coach get you that extra edge to be able to win? In most cases I wouldn't think so.

Ok, Im off my    now.

Tell that to KC who traded a 4th round pick to get their man!! This is a case where an owner obviously thinks Herm will give his team an edge.

You can say the same thing about the Gruden deal.  Do you REALLY think that it was ALL Gruden that got them to the superbowl in his FIRST season as head coach?  Or maybe it was all Callahan that brought the Raiders to meet them in the superbowl.

Herm Edwards was brought out of a shitty situation in NY by his good buddies in KC. 4th round pick really isn't surmountable.  The first round pick handed over by the Buc's is though.  And ya, the bucs made it to the superbowl and won it.  But not because of Gruden.  Dungee made that team.  That was his team that went to the superbowl.  Just like it was Gruden's Raider team that faced them that year.
