OK gents... when/how are we going to do this thing?  I know my August is filling up very quickly so I'd like to reserve a date before it's too late.

When and how are completely open to THE NEW GUY :)

Last year we all got online one night and knocked it out in about 4 hours (of course there were some lags and lulls as people logged on and off).  The year before we did it as an extended message board draft and it took a little over a week to complete.

I'd prefer to knock it out in one fell swoop if possible.  I'm unavailable from 8/11-8/19 as I'll be road-tripping with no internet access. I prefer a weekday evening (I'm on Eastern Daylight Time).

The only weekday nights I am available are Wednesday through Friday.

I too, prefer a weekday night.  I'm unavailable August 25-29, but open any other time.

I could probably do either. Wednesday for sure, most likely Thursday.

A lot of "necessary components" aren't chiming in here...  If no one has already, I would HIGHLY suggest one of yous gets an e-mail out to all your GBRFL2 brethren a.s.a.p...

Maybe we can make it a 2 night affair...7-10 EST both Wed and Thur?

Title: Re: GBRFL2 Draft 2006
Post by Philly on Jun 23rd, 2006, 9:37am
Last year it took about 4 hours to do the whole thing, and I remember we waited for people who logged off on many an occasion. If we can get people to assure that they'll be there, we can try to get it done in 3 hours on one night.  If we don't get it done, then finishing the last couple rounds on the message boards over the next few days wouldn't be that bad.

I agree with Jeff...once you are on, STAY ON!!! DOn't log off and leave, or else you get skipped! :)

I'm up for Wed. 7-10 EST, and then simply finishing the final round or 2 online.   Thurs.  might be tough for me as I'm not sure if I'm flying out that night or not.  But IIRC, I did it in the airport last year!    I'll go by whatever the majority decides.

I'll be on central time, so 6-9 for me, which is just fine.

If we all stay online for those 3 hours, chances are we'll get it done.

Newbie chiming in again. I work on the 23rd, if we are in the middle of drafting, I may get a 911 call that could take me out of the  [smiley=fireman.gif] station from 30 minutes or so up to 10 hours or more depending on the incident. I'd hate to hear those bells go off and have to leave you guys and lose my picks!!(God knows I can't miss a pick with the team I have)

sounds like the 24th works best for everyone.  i'll make sure I'm "somewhere" for draft time (still 7-10 EST?).  I don't have my flights purchased for the weekend yet, so I should be able to make it work

As i feared, I'm going to be travelling the 24th evening.

I can do it from the airport again.  I should be in Minny from about 5:30 PM to 9:10PM.   So it should fit in OK, and we should be able through the bulk of the thing anyway.

did we ever solidify when we were doing it?   If we do the 23rd, I'm wide open.

works for me.  I leave ND at 4:30PM CDT and arrive Minny 5:40PM CDT.   I fly out at 9:45PM CDT, so I'll need to logoff and get to the gate at about 9:10PM CDT.   So if we're starting 7PM EDT; 6PM CDT, We'll have 3 hours to get as far as possible.

Last year, we had to wait for Spuds who was playing softball and attempting to phone in his picks.   If we can get 100% participation and attention, we may be able to crank it out in that time.

Question?????

When is the draft order determined and who draws the lottery tickets and when?  Somebody throw me a bone here  [smiley=dog.gif]

Title: Re: GBRFL2 Draft 2006
Post by BarnabyWilde on Jul 14th, 2006, 5:08pm
Usually Steg organizes the lottery, although Dirk did it last season.

He likes to torture us and makes us wait, like until the day before the draft to determine the order. None of us like that because we are not used to it, but we all just have to bide our time!  ;)

Especially with the Jeremy situation... :-/

MC, refer to this message of mine from the "protection lists" thread here on the GBRFL2 board...

It's fine to go ahead and post your protections here (earlier than necessary and show your cards... ::) or, perhaps, do a little bluffing ;)), but none of this is official until the cut-down date arrives, and that date is something I will set (with a little of you all's input; see below) and not something done internally so as to avoid any possibilities of foul [smiley=chicken.gif] play.  This is where having an external authority oversee things is a unique benefit.  Though I probably won't hold you guys up until the day of the Draft like the mother league does (unless you guys really want to this year), I probably will wait until just a couple days before you all's (current) draft date of August 24th waiting out Jeremy Miller, who has earned such special treatment (that's NOT up for debate).  Anyway,... I just wanted to put this thread into perspective... [smiley=threed.gif]

MC, while I don't totally disagree with you,... you guys already have a sprinter embedded in the field, who is going to be doing this a) from an airport b) on a fairly limited clock, a potentially tenuous situation to be banking on as I humbly see it...  To me, with all due respect to BW, cp and others, I just think that's an accident waiting to happen,... but, whatever...  I just wish yous good luck! Title: Re: GBRFL2 Draft 2006
Post by Chumpzilla on Jul 21st, 2006, 7:48pm
I'm not suggesting a thing (except possibly looking at dates again).

Best scenerio would be to have a live draft.  Since that's not realistic at this point (or possibly ever), the next bet is to get everyone on-line.  We tried that last year.  It was definitely better than years before.  But it still had problems.  Some owners did not act responsibly.  There were times in the draft where owners disappeared without providing proxy picks.  Later in the draft some owners just logged of and didn't tell anyone they had to bail.  In the meantime it's getting late and the rest of us are on-line with our dick in our hands.

If owners are not committed to the date or will not provide a comprehensive draft list to a neutral third party, we will be in the same boat as last year.  We may get a significant part of it done while the remainder drags on for another week.  Because of CP's situation, I feel pretty confident this will be a repeat of last year.

Unfortunately, I don't have the magic answer.  You can't force people to either fully commit or use common sense when real life interferes with fantasy football.  All I can say is this... I have been able to draft in a timely manner in all of these drafts.  I have a busy life buit all it took was partnering with one other owner... providing phones numers, e-mail addresses, and proxy picks when necessary.

Let me throw this out there...  I think it would be a bright idea if you guys just ponied up, spent a few bucks to better assure the avoidance of aggravation, and do more organizing AND, well, DO MORE OF THE DRAFT by phone. [smiley=phone.gif] Not to mention, there is the "residual" benefit of "getting to know one another better", which is not only good in and of itself (and part of the point of the league and this site), BUT also will work to help get people to better commit (to things) in the future and in the long-run.  It's a different world, getting people on the phone and "speaking with" them [smiley=phone.gif] and putting at least a voice to the name.  It's just makes thing more, well, "real". [smiley=shrug.gif] I understand, though, that that all takes some effort and a lack of thriftiness...  Again, good luck! [smiley=stpat.gif]

Discussing the details to death won't achieve as much as focusing (in on) the "bigger picture"... and changing the "reality" of the circumstances... [smiley=zenmaster.gif]

I just went back and looked at the draft from last year. There were no long delays (one 10 minute wait, a couple 8 minute waits) -- most picks were made inside of 3 minutes or so.

Captain Purple was in an airport for last year's draft too. He pulled it off without a hitch (he sent me proxies for the last couple rounds when his plane took off). So I don't know why all of a sudden this is a big concern...?

Last year's draft took less than four hours to complete. If people were going to be away from the computer, they sent proxies. It all went relatively smoothly, from my perspective. (Of course sitting and waiting 10 minutes for a pick is tough, when everyone else is picking every 2-3 minutes, but in the grand scheme of things, it went well.)

Let's just keep it as it is, and roll with it. I, for one, cannot be fielding phone calls at that time of night with a little one sleeping.

Thank you Philly!   [smiley=twothumbsup.gif]   I was all over this thing last year, and in the exact same situation.  We will not have a problem on this end.

Jimmy had a softball commitment and was doing his best to proxy the picks in.  Most of our delays were because of that situation, but all in all, it went pretty well I thought.

Let's just leave it as is, and rely on everyone's assurance that we've got committment to the process we've setup.

Thats 2.5 min a pick. High expectations. We need a plan. First off I work at 6am. I would really like to sleep a little. CP is on a plane at 10:10 edt? Should we end the draft on day one after his last permissible pick and pick it up the next day? That would be around the 45 pick mark. It would give us time to hit the chat room for a trash talk session. regroup if you will.

Last year I think I made CP's last pick or two by proxy after he had to leave and we finished everything at a reasonable hour.  If we can start promptly at 7:00 PM, then we should be in good shape.  If things drag, then we can discuss alternatives during the draft itself since nearly all of us will be in the chatroom anyway.
