Post by Philly on Aug 23rd, 2006, 4:07pm
Please keep the other thread for picks only. Any discussion regarding the draft should go in this thread. Most of us will be in the chat room during the draft, so any instant commentary and reactions will likely take place there.

What if we already know who we are going to pick...can we just post it and get a head start here and make tommorrow night that much quicker...or just keep it under our hats.

Here is my planned draft strategy:

1.05: Tiger Woods. The guy wins everything, so why not fantasy football games?
1.07: Daredevil. The man without fear, will have no problem catching balls over the middle.
2.05: Norm, from Cheers. Big, brusing body should see plenty of goal line opportunities.
2.09: A case of Right Guard Endurance. What better defense is there? Wait, that's agaist odor. Crap, I just wasted a pick.
3.10 Lindsey Lohan. Man, she's smoking hot. Who cares of she can't play football and parties too much? She's on my team now, baby.
5.03 Gus, the amazing field goal kicking mule, or donkey, or whatever. Better grab him before Jeff or Robert does.
5.05 Malu-Malu, from the Seattle fish market. If that dude can catch fish thrown from anywhere, just imagine him on the football field!
5.10 Dave, the kid who used to live down the street from me. Dude was awesome at kick the can. Will serve as backup to Gus.
9.10 Ryan Leaf. I got a feeling that this is his year, finally...

Never really got the response I was looking for here. I know it is not the norm to start your draft before your draft actually starts, but I can't see a reason not to do it if everyone agrees to it. But, I really don't want to start it if no one falls in line because then we wouldn't really save any time after all.  [smiley=idontknow.gif]

Yes, you should go ahead and pick whenever you are ready.  I believe we did this last year also.  It saves time tonight.  It all depends on who has the ability to log in from work.

guys,

i'm on NWA 876 today out of Minot, scheduled to arrive in Minny at 6PM central.   It's always 20 mins early, but we have a lot of weather up here today (tornado warnings, softball hail).  we may get delayed, and our little airport doesn't have internet.

if my pick comes up, call me at 6028213864 and/or check my flight status.   hopefully there won't be any hiccups, but this info should insure we stay as on track as possible.

Yeah, I would've drafted Mario Williams first overall too.

.....

Hey Rob... if you want to send me your first two picks (#3 and #4), I can make sure they get made for you if you're not around.  (I don't pick until #9, so you won't be giving away any trade secrets or anything... although I was hoping that Bush would fall to me. ::) )

I'm totally shocked that Addai, Williams and Maroney were selected ahead of Vince Young :o

None of them are assured of being their teams starting RB this year or next year.

Title: Re: 2006 GBRFL2 Draft Discussion Thread

As feared, there are flight problems today.  My flight won't leave until 5, and I probably wont get into Minny until 6:15 or 6:30.  Unfortunately, that means we're starting late, but at least we got the first round done!   We'll be pretty much ontime really.

Too many people to pick right now, I can't give a proxy until I see the round develop, but I'll be back on as soon as possible.

Thanks all.

I don't like how Young's game translates to the NFL.   He's a lot like Vick.  perrenial potential, daily dissapointment.

Are you kidding? Addai will win the job outright at sometime this year......Williams is a Foster injury away (eh-hem this year) and Maroney is supposedly ahead of schedule to be the man!!! Vince may get some time, but he in my opinion is the biggest project.

Plus being a keeper league and running backs are at a premium, so I thought it was better to take a flyer on a RB instead of the quarterback.

WOW!  I just spent the last 30+ minutes editing the picks... [smiley=no.gif] I don't know if it's ADS, spasms, lax "who cares" attitudes, or an actual disregard for me, but...

...  Guys, I'm just going to put it this way...  My goal with FantasyFootballer.com is to be opening offices for it someday (and, if yous have learned anything about me over the last four or so years, you MUST have learned that I don't give up (easy); my goal was to come to UH; their telling me, "NO," TWICE made "NO" difference; now, I am one of their top students).  Way back I had divulged to a couple of the key guys here that I felt I... we were on an 8-year plan, of which we will have reached the exact halfway point in a couple days.  I feel that we are on that schedule, maybe, just maybe a little ahead of that schedule (especially if the magazine happens next year).  In that context, let it be clearly known what I value if it isn't already ostensibly clear:

1) Paying attention to detail; believing that no detail is too small in the presentation of the product;

2) Paying attention to what you're doing and what those around you are doing; being aware of your surroundings/context;

3) Following instructions and patterns to a T;

4) Appropriate application of creativity; knowing when and where creative urges are apropos and when and where they are NOT;

5) PATIENCE!  (Don't be in a rush.  What is it that we are here for,... right?  Savor the moment, and take it ALL in!)

[smiley=zenmaster.gif]

Put that in your pipe and smoke it if you want and don't if you don't, but don't tell me at some later date that I didn't tell you so.  Moreover, know the natural consequences of your deciding to smoke it or not.  I mean...  You do whatever you want.  Just don't expect anything inconsistent with what the circumstances are from me.  Things are what they are in life...  That's all. [smiley=yinandyang.gif]

Hey Steg... I would've gone in and edited the stuff for you, but I had my hands too full already. I became the point of contact for a few wayward (offline) drafters and was also keeping track of everything so I could verify and post it in its entirety for you at the end.

I did see some who blatantly made no effort to get it right, and that was just wrong in my opinion.

I was probably guilty of using WR instead of RC and P instead of PK.  Good thing I only draft one kicker :)

Title: Re: 2006 GBRFL2 Draft Discussion Thread
Post by captainpurple on Aug 25th, 2006, 10:07am
I know I did that (WR vs. RC), and the "blissfully ignorant" label probably applies.   I was just too busy to realize I was f'in up....my bad.

Thanks for cleaning it up!  Rest assured, your plea didn't fall on deaf ears Steg.....blissfully ignorant ears maybe...but not deaf   ;)

Onto the draft itself.  Here is my quick analysis... (in draft order):

Ken - Bush and Bucs defense were the only good picks. Frerotte is fine as a handcuff, but probably could have been had later. Gado at 2.01? Better luck with 1.01 next season.

Keith - Is definitely rebuilding and Maroney, Holmes, and Moss will help. I really like the Kitna and Kasay picks, and Morency is a good cuff for Dom Davis, but the rest are unimpressive.

Gene - With the exception of Jerome Harrison, I thought he had an excellent draft. Walter and Campbell could contribute this year, and he got two very solid WRs. Skins D and Josh Brown are solid picks.

Rob - Leinart and Addai are very nice picks, and Henry could pay dividends if Brown gets hurt and LenDale gets in trouble (both likely). The drafted receivers are solid, if not exciting. With some big stat years, this team could surprise.

Jim - Decent, but not spectacular draft. Williams is huge, and all the receivers are good picks (especially Mr. Irrelevant, who has the tools to be another Gates/Gonzo type). Young is a question mark. Is he another Culpepper or another Vick? Not too excited about Lundy or Calhoun. This should be a much better team in 06 than 05.

Todd - Mike Bell was a solid pick. Wright was a nice handcuff for Palmer. Kickers are solid, but Vinatieri could have gone a round or two later. The rest don't inspire.

Tony - Didn't have many early picks, but had a decent draft nonetheless. Jackson was a great pick as he's the #2 QB behind an aging #1 and a solid offensive line. Griese could start soon. Excellent kickers. RBs and RCs are average.

Jamie - Good all-around draft. Only Ramsey selection was shaky (although completely justified as a cuff to Pennington). With decent QB play, will challenge for title.

Jeff - I may be biased, but I love my draft. The only problem I see is a week 5 bye issue at RB. I love my receiver corps and think this is a contending team.

Ray - I think Ray did a masterful job during the off-season, but the draft was average. Getting both cuffs to Westbrook was a good move, and Cutler will be a stud down the road. He's still the champ and the team to beat.

As far as my draft goes, the picks I liked alot were Williams, Horn, Wilford, the Ravens,Feely and Vern Davis. Not too overly thrilled with Young,Lundy or Calhoun. I plan on just stashing them for a while and see what happens. Word out of Detroit is that Calhoun is a much better fit in the Martz offense than KJ is. I guess we'll just have to see.

I do think I have a better team than last year. I am thin at QB and even thinner at RB, unless Dayne gets the starting job or Foster gets hurt. I think I am very deep at the RC position, my kicker is solid and my 2 defenses should be good;I'll have to play matchups there.

Even though the scoring doesnt seem to lean heavy towards kickers, as some do, I wanted the best availible player in a category. While you are right that Vinatieri may have gone a round or 2 later, due to solid predraft planning I did not have a third round pick. I dont think I could have gotten him in the 4th. Case and point. Rackers is selected 3.04. (4) defenses are selected before I choose again. A.V would have gone elsewhere.
