Title: Moving on...  The solution...
Post by StegRock on Nov 2nd, 2006, 4:20am
Guys, after giving this some serious thought and tinkering around, for various reasons, I'd like to make the "replacement" of Jamie a "team 'effort'."  The key [smiley=key.gif] job I need done is the inputting of the lineups.  So, what I've done is make a simple spreadsheet where everybody's lineups can be typed in.  No calculations, no worries about raw stats or any of the small things someone taking over the job would need me to give him an in-service on (which I don't want to deal with right now).  THAT HAVING BEEN SAID, this is a big task.  You HAVE TO be VERY meticulous doing this.  With 1) cascading, 2) unacquired free-agents listed in lineups, 3) successful drops listed in lineups, 4) guys making mistakes, 5) two potential different lineups per team, 6) abbreviated player names, and on and on and on, this is no easy task.  I'd say you have to allot at least a good 45 minutes to get it done right.  BUT, I NEED yous to get this done.  I just don't have the time.  I've got five to six weeks to get 50 to 60 pages worth of thesis papers done,... oh,... and "deal with" Japanese "on the side"... and, perhaps, a conference to attend at the beginning of December ([smiley=fingerscrossed.gif]).  It's going to be a nightmare, [smiley=Freddie.gif] and I am at a crucial point in my studies.  BUT, I have faith [smiley=pray.gif] in you guys to get the job done... WELL! [smiley=yes.gif]

The way I look at it, every week someone can "call it", say he's gonna do it for the week, RIGHT HERE ON THIS THREAD and download the Excel spreadsheet workbook, which is ABSOLUTELY straightforward.  Maybe someone can also, on a week-by-week basis, offer up being the "checker guy", a guy who would check the work done by the main guy.  So, in other words, the protocol would be:  1) someone calls it (and perhaps someone offers to check it); 2) he downloads the spreadsheet and does the input; 3) he e-mails it to me (or to the guy who offered to check it); 4) (the guy checking it corrects it if need be and sends it BACK to the guy who originally did so he can do a double-check (I think that is the best way to go.); 5) finally, the original guy sends it to me by e-mail.  I believe this can all happen in the course of the day if you guys are organized.

SO, without further ado, here is the "lineups" spreadsheet:

I'll be looking forward to see us working together, overcoming this absolutely lame-ass situation and getting the job done. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Steg, I'll step up and do my share. Do you have a completed sheet from the past to view. Do you need player last names? Full names? Can we expand the cells if we want more room? When do you need it completed and emailed to you by?

I can check week 1.   I cannot commit to any help next week or the week after due to vacation.   But I can pony up and take week 12.

No way for me in November. I'll have to see what I can do in December. I have about a month left of select baseball here in Texas. I believe the last tournament is the first weekend of December, then I should be free to assist in any way possible.

They need to be absolutely METICULOUSLY done, just like on the spreadsheets that are currently out there and downloadable via the "Game Results" page, BUT DON'T USE THAT WORKBOOK.  DOWNLOAD AND USE THE ONE LINKED TO HEREABOVE!!!  Names need to typed out IN FULL, FIRST NAME FIRST - LAST NAME SECOND, CORRECTLY SPELLED, USING CAPITAL LETTERS FOR THE FIRST LETTER OF THE FIRST NAME AND FIRST LETTER OF THE LAST NAME,... just like you would "print" your own name, and, again,... just like the spreadsheets downloadable from the "Game Results" page.  If they are NOT done thusly, they will be of minimal value to me, i.e. a royal pain in my ass, because I won't be able to just "copy-and-paste" them to the scoring workbook, which is the whole point!!!

They should be gotten to me as soon as possible.  I can't "run the stats" until I have them.

I'll be able to help out after Thanksgiving. I'm traveling for business most of next week and the following. I don't know if I'll even have internet access from the hotel.

Well, I did week #8 and sent it to Steve just now! I thought we needed to get it done and I had the time to get to it today. Steve, has to turn over the line-ups soon as well. If you did it already Todd, then no biggy, if you have not then save yourself the time and do it next week.

Well, first off, I want to applaud sk's getting on this quickly this week and, moreover, the overall cooperative effort (especially vis-a-vis last week's last-minute desperation).  He made the right move to get on it early and have you all double-check it, and it seemed like you all did a good job following his lead.  However, things moved too fast for me here this week.  I realized last week that the spreadsheet I had made (that Tony used) is not entirely adequate.  First and foremost, the players' first and last names need to be in seperate cells.  They can't both be in one cell the way I had made the original sheet.  Secondly, a much smaller thing, I also would like the head coaches included.  On the original sheet, I didn't include an area to input head coaches.  So, a NEW spreadsheet is available via the link above, one that 1) provides separate cells for first names and last names of players (for the defenses this doesn't matter, but it would be cool if whoever does this could use the two- or three-letter "team codes" as per the "Weekly Stats" sheet in the (weekly) scoring workbook available for download via the "Game Results" page) and 2) has a row for inputting head coaches.  So, if someone can take sk's work here this week and re-input it into this new sheet, I'd really appreciate it.

One other note, please remember to be absolutely meticulous with this, guys.  For the sheet to be of maximum value to me, players' names need to be spelled correctly and, even more importantly, in the lineups, "cascading", "ignoring unacquired free-agents" and, in the rare case, "incorporating players unsuccessfully dropped" MUST be gone about VERY CAREFULLY!  The "Rosters" page and possibly even past (weeks') lineups will need to be consulted when dealing with those sticky instances.  Of course, doing what sk did and sending the sheet out to everyone for their inspection surely will help get this job done... right.  Thank you in advance for you all's due diligence.

One other thing, just because I stated above that "I can't 'run the stats' until I have (this lineup sheet finished)", do note that you guys' getting this done extremely early, like on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday, does not necessarily mean that I will have the results up commensurately early.  As specifically regards things here, I still have the raw stats to "set up".  Moreover, though, I, like us all, have to deal with life, which these days with just over a month left in the semester is weighing increasingly heavy on me as due dates on 50+-pages worth of papers bears down on me.  Please be understanding.

Alright...  We're making progress, but we still got some rough edges to smooth out here...  First off, I realized yet another inadequacy in the "lineups" spreadsheet. :-/ Whoever does Week 10's lineups, PLEASE click that link above (again) and download the (yet again) "new" lineups spreadsheet.  Also, guys, this task really requires attention to detail...  Players' names got to be spelled right (if I am going to be able to just copy-and-paste this shit).  E.g., Jon Kitna ~= John Kitna.  Also, no extra spaces in the cells, please.  In each cell should be just the first name and just the last name, no extra spaces.  Thanks to my wife's ingenuity this didn't end up being a "delete every extra space one-by-one" nightmare.  She figured out how to use the "trim" command to do a quick fix.  But, that in and of itself took her about 20 minutes.  I was already in process... though not finished.  Anyway, please be meticulous when doing this.  Overall, though, so far so good.

Hey guys... I'm finally home from all my recent business travel. I can take over the processing of the lineups and submitting of spreadsheet to Steg from this point on. Thanks to those of you who have made an effort to keep things going here thus far.

I for one would like to see this league continue into the future. I'm sensing that Steg (based on his post in the trades thread) isn't interested in such a proposition. I know that most of my trades this season have been made to build for the future -- even if others don't think I have any idea what I'm doing. Maybe in the off-season we need to regroup and figure out how we can handle everything ourselves if it comes to that.

God damn...  Of course, one way or another, I am not going to totally screw you guys.  I am just VERY disillusioned about internet relationships (if you haven't noticed or figured it out), and, IN FACT, it's this very kind of post that causes me to be such, at least the "wording" and the "choice of approach".  What I mean by that latter part is that I think it is possible that in your mind you thought you were being nice to me by making this offer and suggestion about the future of "this" league.  That's why I am not totally freaking out here.  But, your tack is all wrong, man, at least in the sense of the timing,... my post isn't up but one damn day and you've got "the show on the road" already,... and in the sense that you posted it here for me to read and have it potentially hurt my feelings and disillusion me FURTHER.  Are you just trying to kick me in the head and "knock me out" while you've got me "down" (in both senses)?  I actually think your move here is wrong on higher levels that could be accurately characterized by the term "power play", but I am willing to let that slide... for various reasons, not the least of which, to bring this around full-circle, is that I am disillusioned about internet relationships and don't have the energy to "fight" right now (let's just hope it's not anymore... or maybe not, I now wonder), which, contrary to common thinking, is NOT a good thing because it means to some degree I don't care.  Can you NOT see I am going through a VERY difficult time here and that maybe you just need to back off (at least for the rest of this God-forsaken season)?  Can you not at least give me the most "generous" reading for a little while here?  Can you NOT see how a post like this at least potentially exacerbates things (and please don't patronize me by chalking this up to planning for the future; you've got all the time in the world for that)?  A post like this makes me feel like "you see opportunity in my losing heart". [smiley=yikes.gif] ... [smiley=bawling.gif] In light of my OBVIOUS emotional state right now as regards this place, the timing and suggestion of this post of yours is neither "thoughtful" nor "considerate"; it's "opportunist", at least in a sense, [smiley=no.gif] though perhaps/hopefully unintentionally so.

I'm definitely not a philosopher or even an amateur psychologist, but it seems like you want to read my post (which was an offer to try to lighten the load for you, now and in the future) as some sort of "opportunity" to take advantage of your fragile emotional state. C'mon already. Listen, I understand that you've got plenty of stuff going on with your classes that makes any additional work here all the more difficult. All of us have stuff going on so the best we can do is try to figure out how to make it all work.
