Title: IMPORTANT: THE AVAILABILITY OF QB DREW HENSON! Post by StegRock on Sep 2nd, 2003, 7:39pm Fellas, This is a very sticky issue, especially in light of DB's trade offer. I, both as player and league commissioner/administrator, have been working under the impression that he should NOT be made available until he signs. If a trade were to be made with DB, or anyone for that matter, with picking Henson up in mind, that could lead to some real ugliness. I actually do NOT hold any strong convictions on whether or not he should be made available now. I am more concerned with what impressions people are working under. I wouldn't want to see him picked up this week and have people contacting me complaining that they did not even put him down on their free-agent request lists because they did not think he was available, especially poignant since I, myself, would be one of those people. As such, at this point it seems more fair to make him UNavailable until he signs an official contract with Houston. At least the stickiness of varying perceptions would be put on a level playing-field. However, if he were to sign by kickoff Thursday night, then he's available. If not, he would not be until he signs. So, you could list him and I would deal with it that way. That is how I think we should proceed. THAT HAVING BEEN SAID, if you guys want to take a vote on this, I'm game. It's just that it's SO LATE in the going at this point. But, if we could get the guys in and a majority of you would rather have him be available, that's fine by me. Please state your thoughts about IT ALL herein! Thank you! Peace out, Steg P.S. (I just want to avoid headaches and creating an unfair set of circumstances. [smiley=shrug.gif] ) |

Title: Re: IMPORTANT: THE AVAILABILITY OF QB DREW HENSON Post by DirkDiggler on Sep 2nd, 2003, 7:46pm I personally think he should be available. The reason being is he should be viewed as an unsigned rookie. |

Title: Re: IMPORTANT: THE AVAILABILITY OF QB DREW HENSON Post by DOLFAN on Sep 2nd, 2003, 8:47pm Stegey, I really don't see any BIG issue at all. Why is he any different than Jeff George or Jamal Anderson. (I know Jamal was unsigned, not sure about George though). They, I believe, were both unsigned guys that were taken and/or on someones roster in the past weren't they? Also to agree with Steve Warner he is JUST an unsigned rookie. I think you are the only one making it a very sticky issue. This should be IMO not even brought up for discussion. There is no question about if he SHOULD be available. The precedent has been set. HE IS AVAILABLE. I can take John Elway, Dan Marino, Cris Carter or even Terrell Davis if i want to right? At least that is the way we have done it in the past right? |

Title: Re: IMPORTANT: THE AVAILABILITY OF QB DREW HENSON Post by DB on Sep 2nd, 2003, 10:02pm Its good to be on-line at home again, as I just set up my new laptop. On this issue, I am probably biased based on my pick, but Joe and Steve's argument makes sense and I would vote with them. Henson could have went in our draft right? For the record, I did not consider him when I made the offer and yet I still offered the deal to someone that called, who turned down my offer! |

Title: Re: IMPORTANT: THE AVAILABILITY OF QB DREW HENSON Post by StegRock on Sep 3rd, 2003, 1:51am Seems, thus far, like you guys, me too, either don't care if he is available or not OR want him to be available. I couldn't give a rat's ass! HOWEVER, none of you are getting or "appreciating" my point. Joe, your examples of George and Anderson are NOT AT ALL analogous. They were free-agent veterans who already had gone through the "NFL draft system". John Elway's situation back in '83 when he was drafted by the Colts but did not sign would be much more akin. My concern is really NOT AT ALL one of the "technicalities" of the issue; I am only concerned about the issue of fairness in our game based on everybody's individual perception as to whether or not he is available (before he signs) AND the subsequent precendent this decision will set. This may seem inconsequential now, but... I guess the precedent would be that once a dude goes through the NFL draft once, he becomes available to be picked up in the GBRFL. I suppose that's fine by me. Also, I suppose this thread and the e-mail I sent out to EVERYONE should serve as due notice of his availability in free-agency before he signs, i.e. now in Week 1. Let's give a few more guys a chance to respond and I'll give you all my determination tomorrow afternoon/evening. [smiley=bow.gif] |

I do appreciate your opinion Steg. However, he was drafted, and rights owned by someone. I would say IF he does not sign and goes back into the draft, that you can NOT keep him. We are NOT setting a precedent you can draft anyone. It is not like I can take Trevor Jones or Eli Manning now. Not until they are drafted and rights owned by someone. |

Title: Re: IMPORTANT: THE AVAILABILITY OF QB DREW HENSON Post by DOLFAN on Sep 3rd, 2003, 7:57am Hmmm, good point Stegey. I did not look at it from that angle. Same with you Mr. Warner. Either way i still feel that he is available to be taken in our league. I read/heard somewhere that he is under contract until March '04 for Baseball and that "that" contract forbids him to sign with another "professional sports team." DB brought up a good point about Deion, which i feel is a totally Different situation. Again i feel, and would vote if it were brought up, that he is available to us all. That having been said, Stegey now owns the 1st pick of waiver wire this week, so what will he do with that pick? |

Title: Re: IMPORTANT: THE AVAILABILITY OF QB DREW HENSON Post by DB on Sep 3rd, 2003, 12:37pm I was always under the impression that we could draft players who were drafted but unsigned. [smiley=hellyeafunny.gif] I'm sure there are many examples of that situation, but I can't think of any. Was Tomlinson signed when he went in our draft? I recall that he wasn't. The only difference is that our drafts are so freakin early that many players probably didn't sign and now it is Week 1. Either way, a call has to be made ASAP because a trade may hinge on the decision. It seems that no one has opposed his availability, so unless Steve outright overrules the votes, he should be available. [smiley=boxer.gif] Perhaps people could chime in with votes by 5 pm, so Steven can make the call tonight. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |

Title: Re: IMPORTANT: THE AVAILABILITY OF QB DREW HENSON Post by Pakman on Sep 3rd, 2003, 1:47pm I think that Henson should be available in the free agent draft. I'm not sure if I'm correct, but wasn't Chad Hutchinson in the same situation when he was drafted in our league. ??? |

Title: Re: IMPORTANT: THE AVAILABILITY OF QB DREW HENSON Post by StegRock on Sep 3rd, 2003, 2:49pm Well, I slept on it last night... a good thing, epiphanous. It always turns out that the GBRFL system "answers all questions" as long as the time is taken "to swirl it around in your mouth" for a bit. Drew Henson is available! The bottom line is, whatever your perception was regarding his being available or not, if you want him, you should have included him on your free-agent request list. As we have ALWAYS done, if for some reason a player on your list is not available, we would just skip that player on your list. So, this practice, which is NOT at all new to our league, this ultimate fact(or), completely mitigates my concern over everybody's being on the same page with regards to a player's availability in free-agency. MOREOVER, none of this "'sticky, hairy' having to drop a guy in this kind of sitch if he does not sign with the team that originally drafted him" BS. As league administrator/commissioner, I like things straightforward as you all know. I like to avoid "sticky, hairy" rules/guidelines and, most of all, SITUATIONS. "Clear-cut", even if it does not incorporate each and every tiny nuance, is how I like it. So, as such, once a player is in the NFL (system), he is in the GBRFL, i.e., whoever gets the player has him for as long as he wants regardless of whether the player re-enters the draft next year or signs with the team that originally picked him. This is ultimately an uncommon, quirky thing, but it is much more unfair to the guy who drafted/got the player in this kind of sitch to have to drop him than it is unfair to the rest, who all had the same initial opportunity to procure him, if he is allowed to be kept by his original owner for as long as he wants. The player, in this case Henson, is in the NFL system at this point. That's the bottom line, I suppose. Again, QB Drew Henson is available in the GBRFL and, MOREOVER, henceforth, he and any other player like this are to be treated/considered like any other player! [smiley=bow.gif] |
