Title: READ THIS NOW!!! HUUUUUUUUGE NEWS!!!!! Post by StegRock on Nov 15th, 2004, 1:13am Fellas, READ THIS, especially Frank, Danny and D.T., BEFORE GETTING YOUR MORNING COFFEE, but after taking your morning pee, BECAUSE AS YOU READ THIS, YOU MAY SPILL OR SPEW OUT YOUR COFFEE OR PISS YOURSELVES!!! A glitch in the spreadsheet was brought to my attention this (now, yesterday) evening and fixing it, though it was small, had two HUGE RAMIFICATIONS, one absolutely HUMUNGOUS one. In VERY short (needless to say, it is after 1:00 a.m. and I am just finishing this up (and not doing my homework)), 50-yard field goals were NOT being credited to the top teams in the scoring spreadsheets (the ones above the "scoring" area of the spreadsheets as opposed to the ones below) . For the most part, this just created a very occasional 4-point swing for any given team. HOWEVER, the outcome of ONE critical game EARLY in the season was REVERSED. Frank = :-[ and, gasp, Danny = [smiley=dancin.gif] (I knew that 13-0 undefeated streak, out of Francis no less, was too unbelievable to be true!) Not that anything can be done about it at this point anyway, but luckily, as both Frank and Danny have remained high in the standings, as well as close in the standings, and they are not at all very aggressive in the free-agent market, I would venture to say little if anything was affected free-agent-wise. Moving right along, this little thorn did reverse the outcome of yet a second game. Thankfully, this one was just in Week 9. So, as it turns out, things are quite a bit tighter than we thought!!! Looks like another GBRFL nail-biter in the works!!! Enjoy the "new" standings!!! (Frank, [smiley=doh.gif] I hope you enjoyed it, whatever "it" was, fooling yourself, ;) while "it" apparently lasted.) Oh, now, get that Monday-morning coffee and try to ease your ways into the new reality! [smiley=doseofreality.gif] What a start to the week, huh? A new week with new outlooks sure hath dawned in the GBRFL! Peace out, Steg [smiley=tired.gif] |

Title: Re: READ THIS NOW!!! HUUUUUUUUGE NEWS!!!!! Post by DOLFAN on Nov 15th, 2004, 10:16am The game in week 9 was between Trout and myself was reversed also, thus I beat Trout by 3 pts. It's about damn time I beat his ass. He has beat me up the last 2 years. That's about all I can say, since the rest of my games have been subpar to say the least. Well, this was my 2 minutes of glory. The revised standings really change the landscape at the top...and in the middle of the pack too. |

Title: Re: READ THIS NOW!!! HUUUUUUUUGE NEWS!!!!! Post by DB on Nov 15th, 2004, 12:57pm This doesn't directly affect me, but can games be changed this late??? I thought that everyone was responsible for checking the spreadsheet and by the next week if no objections are made, too bad. This is similar to the olympics (Frank is Paul Hamm [smiley=clown.gif]). Do we now have to go back and change Free agents?? |

That's not quite accurate. There have been similar situations in the past. I think only maybe 2 to 4 weeks back, not this far back, granted, but this kind of situation has happened. In any event, I, personally, would prefer to have it be above-board and not have, per se, my championship be tarnished. And, as for free-agents, I did address that in my post. That's something that cannot be untangled, unfortunately. However, again, as I stated and gave evidence for above, this probably had little to NO effect on how the free-agents were distributed. In any event, just because everything cannot be disabused doesn't mean you don't (try your best to) make right what you can. |

Title: Re: READ THIS NOW!!! HUUUUUUUUGE NEWS!!!!! Post by DB on Nov 15th, 2004, 8:30pm I will disagree with Steve on this one [smiley=tonguetied.gif]. Quote:
It is "above board". Danny or whoever had a chance to review the spreadsheet and didn't note the error. Frank or whoever didn't cause the error or contribute to it in any way. While I usually get blown out every game, if and when I lose a close game, I try to look for errors. Just my opinion. ;) |

Title: Re: READ THIS NOW!!! HUUUUUUUUGE NEWS!!!!! Post by Flesh is Fantasy on Nov 16th, 2004, 3:04am Internet Joe; Thank you so much for pointing out the affect of the game reversals on the standings. I didn't realize we had a standings page ?.?.?How exactly did the landscape at the top(miles from you as usual) change ? I think Mia is still menstruating on the rest of the group. Finally, can you cut the crap with the feeble attempt at modesty each time you write a post. No one actually gives a shit about your teams shortcomings. Unlike you, most of us only have ONE fantasy team in one sport to follow. I'm sure your probably atleast competitive in your Nascar, golf, tennis, women's volleyball, cricket, bocce ball,cow-tipping,bird watching, dog racing, and whatever else I'm missing leagues. As you can clearly see I for one am not concerned ;D |

Title: Re: READ THIS NOW!!! HUUUUUUUUGE NEWS!!!!! Post by Art Vandalay on Nov 16th, 2004, 8:20am It's ironic that the game in question was one that was orginaly overturned due to a spreadsheet error which I pointed out to Steve (the same day it was posted). The fact that Danny accepted it without looking over his data is questionable, yet understandable considering how busy he must be with all that bone cracking and stuff. Steve brings up a good point in that whoever wins this year ;) would not want their championship tarnished by accuracy questions. I would bring up the point that we should have a defined time frame for over-turning a game's results going forward. Would we overturn a championship because an error was found the following season? It should be a realistic limit, and I don't think that a week or two is too much to ask. Again, I'm not that concerned and I am fine with the judge's decision, but this needs to be better defined for the future. |

Title: Re: READ THIS NOW!!! HUUUUUUUUGE NEWS!!!!! Post by DOLFAN on Nov 16th, 2004, 11:40pm Aww, isn't that sweet. More love from Mr. Trout. That's OK Dave, let it all out. You lose 1 game to me and you fall apart and feel like you have to defend your manhood. Do you feel better now? Will this make you sleep better at night knowing that you finally talked about it. Just accept it I beat you. Acceptance is always the first step to recovery young man. Ya know what I can't understand is how you are always, year after year, worried about me. You annually state that I have "no chance", and that my team "needs help." [smiley=deadhorse.gif] I think you do it as a weak attempt to transfer focus from your own shortcomings of never winning it all in this league. True, you do have something like 6 or 7 2nd place finishes, if we can't remember, I'm sure that you will remind of us! [smiley=violin.gif] I will probably never have that many. I think you should change you team name to the "Buffalo Bills." [smiley=bawling.gif] Maybe you should focus more on your QB area, after all I think you have had 10-11 Qbs on your team this year lose their jobs. Don't fret, Warner just hit the pine, maybe Garcia is next. This should stir up some shit smack talk, I can't win a fucking game in here, but at least I can still have fun on these boards. Slam me Dave. The ball is in your court...It's your turn my friend. [smiley=waitinforu.gif] |

I don't disagree with this, actually. And, actually, in all fairness to DB, somewhere along the way, I do think I might have mentioned (to him) that (I think in light of my going back to school) I can't be going back and fixing shit (this season like I've done). IT IS A LOT OF WORK, mind you. I did, though, this time, anyway... In any event, we can revisit this at the summer (or winter/spring) meeting, but I will say this much... I, for one, would want my championship to be "authentic". Personally, if I knew something like this happened and, especially, if I were on the loser's end of the reversal (i.e., reversing the score causes me to go from winning to losing), I would want it righted (and probably would choose for it to be even if we ruled otherwise, i.e., I'd want us only to pass a rule that permits the owner in question to decline the benefit of the rule and let the result be reversed against him). But, that's just me. I tend not to be a whiner (about this kind of stuff). Also, with respect to going back to a prior season, I think that is obviously "over-the-top". That said, this error started Week 8 of last year (after that dude who was helping me improve the speadsheets all of a sudden bailed on me and I had to in a hurry RE-organize the spreadsheets, during which time I now realize I "typoed" (not a word, DB) in cell "V22"), and I applied it to last year to see if there were any effects. There were hardly any (in either league), only a few score changes, no game reversals. As such, I did, for the hell of it, update last year's stuff. But, that's just my being anal. When a season is over, the final standings are in stone. I do, however, think that within a season, it is not that big of a deal to "clean things up", and I am also speaking from an administrative perspective even though it is a lot of work (ON ME). ... But, anyway, we can hammer this out later. ... Oh, yea, and, actually, it is "aboveboard" (see http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=aboveboard&x=21&y=14). [smiley=doh.gif] I suspect that it etymologically came about by way of the two words' being hyphenated and, hence, the mistake, which I also suspect not a few people make. |

Title: Re: READ THIS NOW!!! HUUUUUUUUGE NEWS!!!!! Post by StegRock on Nov 19th, 2004, 9:20pm Guys, One quick note, while it is fresh on my mind and since it is key to the discussion we are going to have on this issue down the line, there is a difference to consider between a mistake in a stat and an error in the program, which has a universal effect. If it is found to be a problem in the spreadsheet and throughout the speadsheets, we know it affects, potentially, each and every game. Whereas, an isolated stat biff is just a singular accident, one only affecting that team for that week. Anyway, this is just an important angle I wanted to bring out now so that it can be (addressed) in your minds between now and when we deal with this. Out, [smiley=cruisin.gif] Steg |

Title: Re: READ THIS NOW!!! HUUUUUUUUGE NEWS!!!!! Post by StegRock on Jan 7th, 2005, 4:27pm Guys, as we enter the offseason and discussion on this is likely, please do consider, be considerate of, the fact that there are three types of these kinds of problems: 1) A glitch in the program (which is what this was); 2) A mistake in the stats either on my part or TQStats's (which is very rare); 3) An official after-the-fact change in the stats by the NFL (which, in the rare instance it does happen, sometimes I catch it; usually I don't). These should all be considered and dealt with differently. That said, these are all fairly rare occurances, especially #2. Bottom line, let's not make a mountain out of a molehill. |
