Title: A Few Thoughts
Post by DB on Jan 3rd, 2007, 10:25am
  • I think I'm rooting for Mark to win the title.  If Travis wins, we're all going to look like chumps if someone comes in and wins it without making moves.  Although to Travis' credit, sometimes the best moves are the ones you don't make.
  • I wish someone had the balls to play someone in the Pro Bowl (except Mark who listed everyone as going to the Pro Bowl including Jay Culter  ::))
  • Even if Trout loses his last two games, his record this year was amazing.  I looked at his team in the beginning of the year and he didn't even have one starting RB.  His team was a joke but somehow he is always near the top.

  • Even though Frank and Pak have long since given up, I'm happy that my team will end the season on a 6 game winning streak.
  • Although I love our system, I think there is more luck in this type of head to head than in any other system.  If we played a point system, I think my team would have been in the top half.
  • I'm looking to deal this off-season (unlike in the past).  Nothing major but I think I have at least 15 keepers at this point.  By the way, I'm going to win this league next year.    ;)

What, Jay Cutler isn't going to the Pro Bowl?

I thought the same thing about Travis's/DOUG'S winning it this year... until I had spoken to Frank about it, and he enlightened me to some of the "finer" points.  First of all, if he does, it gives us great fodder against Joe, who came in under arguably better circumstances,... and "I'm infatuated with my running backs... at the expense of my record" ;) Warner for that matter, too.  Secondly, there will always be at least an informal asterisk next to his name in the books for this championship, indicating that really it's Doug Owens's. ;) (That having been said, I do think Travis did a fantastic job "managing" the team.  This is NOT an easy format to come into.  I, for one, accredit it to his being ABD in Philosophy. [smiley=whistle.gif])

Trout has done a fantastic job with his team this year. [smiley=yes.gif] ... [smiley=clap.gif] The quintessential word that you used, though, is "near" (the top). [smiley=hellyeafunny.gif] ... ;)

Pak, actually, has broken the 3-Strike Rule.  I know he has been in the midst of a move here in December, but... it is what it is.  Frank, though I don't think he did, i.e., he made sure to get a lineup in every third week, I believe, did pull a pretty Busch League move toward the end with that NON-lineup of his. [smiley=thumbsdown.gif] This does need to be addressed.  Regarding the latter, Mark and I have even discussed a specific rule to deter this.

While I concede that you did run into some bad luck this year, DB, especially early on,... I know I run the stats,... I TOTALLY disagree with you about luck weighing in as heavily as you are suggesting.  In any event, it's what I ALWAYS observe regarding this kind of sentiment that is most "striking" and "telling" to me (as a (wanna-be/budding, whatever you like) "professional (academic) philosopher").  It's NEVER a league Champ who gives this kind of spiel (it's never me either, self-praise notwithstanding, might I add).  It's ALWAYS someone low in the standings.  Yea, a Champ may say, "I got lucky."  But, that is just a "moment" of humbleness.  At the end of the day, he ain't "really" second-guessing whether or not he "really" deserved it, and he is going to wallow in his "superior" position.  Point being, if people higher in the standings (consistently) came out with this kind of rhetoric, I'd think it was telling me something objective/objectively extrapolated (I'm speaking "big picture" here).  Given that it's not, I realize that it tells me more about human psychology and exclusive subjectivity.  ...  In any event, I have your roster up right now.  You have an average team:  subpar quarterbacks; two great running backs and one VERY disappointing one, but that's pretty much it, which puts you in that second/third tier of three or so teams at RB; VERY disappointing receivers; a good, but not top-top defense...  Sounds like about 4th to 6th place to me.  I agree that head-to-head involves luck in a way that cumulative points seems not to.  On the other hand, I strongly feel that cumulative points leagues overvalue having a ridiculous player like Tomlinson over team balance (notwithstanding the fact that Markie, who may win the league this year, has him; he also has Barber, Alexander and a VERY balanced team overall).  We play 29 games, more than enough to "weed things out", and we do NOT have a cheesy two-or-three-week season at the end, i.e. playoffs.  And, then, of course, there's the season-to-season perspective as this is a deep keeper league, which has been ongoing for going on 15 years.  Luck factors little into that résumé.  Anyway, without going on and on about this, I cite the following thread:  http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=56;action=display;num=1136159846.

Tell us all about how lucky you were next year, then. ;)

Peace! [smiley=hippy.gif]
