Title: 2009 Summer Meeting & Draft... Going Live Again!?
Post by StegRock on May 31st, 2009, 3:09am
Heya, Fellas!

Now that the Stegeman summer schedule, our move to Illinois (for more on that if you are still not in the know, click here (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=58;action=display;num=1037120039;start=75) and scroll down a bit) and our swing through NJ, is starting to take shape I wanted to apprise you guys of some possible dates for our 2009 GBRFL Summer Meeting & Draft (and annual pool basketball [smiley=drown.gif] showdown, for which I am going to start working out ;)) that would permit my attendance.  PLEASE DO NOTE THAT at this time we are not yet voting nor am I looking for us to make any final, final decisions.  However, feel free to share your preferences based on your respective schedules.  The reason for my not wanting us to dive right into voting on a date or making any final decisions at the moment and, instead, just stick to sharing our respective thoughts and summer plans is because the Steggies also have a Christening and family-and-friends party to schedule for Baby Monica [smiley=newbie.gif] Marie.  It will presumably at this point be on one of the Sundays of the LATTER two weekends I will suggest here.  So, without further ado, here are the weekends the Tour de Steg will be passing through NJ:

Saturday, August 1st and Sunday, August 2nd
Saturday, August 8th and Sunday, August 9th
Saturday, August 15th and Sunday, August 16th

I hope we can avoid that first weekend as it really is earlier than I'm sure any of us want.  With that said, Monica's Christening and party will be on one of those two latter weekends, which could complicate whatever weekend it ends up being and, thus, compromise things with regards to the scheduling of the Draft.  So, I say, assuming having me there is top priority, we don't absolutely rule out the first weekend.  That said, make no mistakes.  I too hope to avoid it, and, in fact, if possible, my hopes are that we can conduct the Meeting & Draft on that last weekend.

Okay,... thoughts???  Also, feel free to discuss location options if yous want (other than Frank's?).

That last weekend is no good for me, i have a wedding, sorry. I could do it but would be difficult. Why not the weekend after, the  21st? I like the later the better, more time to evaluate players ect

We can do it then, Danny, BUT then, the point is, I won't be able to be in attendance as I have to be back in Illinois, and, if I am going to be in Jersey in August, it seems (to me at least) a little foolish to NOT have the Meeting & Draft while I am there.  [What's a little frustrating, [smiley=frustrated.gif] man, is that every year (at least that I am going to be in Jersey around Draft time) you say the same thing, and then I have to clarify.  It's the same damn dance every time.  READ!  CONSIDER!  THEN, post!  Come on, bro!]

Regarding that weekend, though, what day is the wedding, Danny?  Does the wedding put you out the whole weekend?  Come on...  You've seen the ESPN MVP commercials.  You should not just be able to do a fantasy football draft during a wedding, you should be able to do it during YOUR wedding. ;)

One other thing that I've brought up in the past, I'm going to bring up again... probably in vain, I understand...  We're all grown up now...  We're working with over two-months notice here.  Why not a weekday, say, a Friday?  I'll be in Jersey from roughly July 29th through August 19th.  Besides the weekends, there are a lot of weekdays there to work with.  Again, though, just throwing it out there...  I realize that, ultimately, based on people's work schedules we're probably relegated to the weekends,... but... here's to thinking outside the box, and not just being... [smiley=inthebox.gif] ... [smiley=shrug.gif]

I'm on vacation the week of August 10th but nothing is booked yet.  So, I will be around for one of the last two weekends that were suggested and can pretty much work things around whatever date we pick.  I want to arrange things on my end somewhat soon, so hopefully we can decide about the draft in the next two weeks or so.

With that said, my preference is to draft the weekend of the 15th and 16th.

A weekday draft is somewhat feasible for me, if you guys want to try to arrange something.

At this point in time, any of the dates listed works for me....."the later the better" would be my preference.

In regards to a weekday, I could TRY to make it work, however, it would not be my preference.  Traffic alone would make it more challenging getting up there.

Well, I can't make it to NJ for the draft, but I can do it from here pretty much any day.  No restrictions on this end.

At this point I am open to all of the dates.

We have not hammered out 100% our family vacation to the beach.

I will keep everyone posted if anything changes.

I cannot do it the first weekend in August.  I will be in a conference all day Saturday and it is out of state, so I will not be able to get back on Sunday.  May be able to do it that Sunday via telephone.

The other 2 dates are fine, but I too am looking to solidify vacation plans, so the earlier we are able to lock down a date, the better.

It would be great if we could nail down this date.

It seems that many of us are trying to schedule our vacations around the opportunity to attend the draft.

I think we heard from everyone except Trout who usually doesn't respond.  Unless someone wants to give him a call or unless Stegeman's Christening creates a conflict, let's just pick a day -- August 8, 9, 15, or 16.  I prefer the 16th.

Title: Re: 2009 Summer Meeting & Draft... Going Live Agai
Post by StegRock on Jun 13th, 2009, 5:01pm
Okay, guys, I got the date for the Baptism all hammered out...  (You guys may want to make a note of this date as well, actually.)  The Christening will be on Sunday, August 9th [at (the) 10:30 (mass at Holy Spirit Church in Asbury Park, where Gino and I got married)].  (For those of you Ocean Townshippers/south Floridians here, Ed Williams, who you may know/have met through me, will be coming up from Florida to serve as "the Godfather".)

ANYway, I suppose now we can get to VOTING!  I'm guessing none of us want to roll this on August 1st or 2nd.  So, with the 9th now out, the dates to vote on are August 8th, 15th or 16th.

As for me personally, I am with DB, and most of you, in wanting to conduct the draft as late as possible.  So, I am definitely for having it the last weekend (sorry, Danny :-[ ... [smiley=letsmakeup.gif]).  However, I would sort of prefer to have it on the Saturday instead of the Sunday... so we can really make a night of it, maybe go out afterwards [or, at least, perhaps extend our pool [smiley=drown.gif] time (I know I'd love to get Joe in on a game of pool hoops)???].  SO, my vote is for Saturday, August 15th, BUT which day that weekend doesn't really matter to me.  I'm just happy those of us who can be will all be together on whatever day. :)

SO, the current vote tally is...

Saturday, August 8th - 0
Saturday, August 15th - 1
Sunday, August 16th - 1

SUBMIT YOUR VOTE NOW!!!

Per the e-mails Danny sent out,... Saturday, August 15th is (unfortunately :-/) an absolute NO-GO for him.  So, with everybody's wanting to do this as late as possible, Saturday, August 8th's getting no votes and no heretofore stated conflicts on the 16th, it looks like we can cease voting as our date has for all intents and purposes been set for us at this point...  Barring anything unforeseen, at this point, the 17th Annual GBRFL Summer Meeting & Draft will be on...

Sunday, August 16th, with a scheduled start-time of, say, 1:00 p.m. (assuming that's good with Frank). [smiley=pencil.gif] So, mark your calendars or Blackberries or whatever!  Follow-up info will be posted on this thread.

I am a go for August 16th.

I will be commuting with Warner, as always. I only ask that everyone try to be there on time so that we can get it rolling. Ya never know I just may play pool hoops this year.

Warner let me know when you want to meet up like we did last year. Call me or email me with a time. We will meet at the same place bro.

I ask Steg if we could do the lottery draft the Saturday, August 8th before the draft since he will be doing his Christening on the 9th.

Is there any chance we could start at noon versus 1pm?  It makes things easier for both coming up and going home.

Heyas, guys, how about a compromise with Stevo?  I'm game... and willing to declare a start time of 12:30 (EST).  Bottom line, though, it's going to be what it's going to be.  I, for one, am always on Hawaiian time.  This is a social event more than anything (the GBRFL is a social event).  There is an official aspect to things, BUT I never want the official side of things to detract from the personal and social side, especially on the day of the Summer Meeting & Draft.  The only thing is a consideration of the distance Steve and Joe are coming.  But, on the other hand, we never want anyone getting into a car accident (KNOCK ON WOOD) rushing to get to the GBRFL Summer Meeting & Draft on time.  But, again, I am willing to shoot for 12:30.  You guys good with that?

Setting aside the start time for a moment, one other thing that bodes well for those coming a distance, speaking of "official" matters, is the fact that it appears that we have little to nothing to hash out this year as regards rules discussions.  So far nothing has been brought up, and I personally can't see anything needing addressing this year.  Furthermore, the draft lottery will not be conducted at the draft.  So, we should be able to dive into the Draft more quickly than ever, start time notwithstanding.

Anyway...

[offtopic]Guys, this Christening and after party is really starting to become an event.  We're looking at having some crowd.  The Baptism will take place per the above.  The after party will be in Jackson, which is down near Tom's River, where Frank lives.  QUESTION,... we're contemplating invitations...  You are all anticipatively invited.  I was wondering...  Do any of you anticipate being able to attend?  (I'm going to send this message out by e-mail, as well.  Also, this is obviously mainly for the guys up in the Jersey area, I understand.)[/offtopic]

Thanks for the earlier start time.

Being prompt has nothing to do with having fun.  If everyone gets there on time, we can start being 'social' earlier.......  I am not even going to comment on the car accident statement.

Besides, with the draft lottery being held a week before the draft, I think that will allow a lot more social time.

Exactly, "being prompt has nothing to do with having fun"!  I couldn't agree more! ;) I personally would prefer to be social "later", if you will (and that's why I would prefer this to be on Saturday or even a Friday instead of Sunday).  I mean, of course, earlier AND later would be the ultimate, but you (guys coming up from Virginia, moreover, on a Sunday) have a particularly vested interest in its being earlier.  I understand that.  That's why I am willing to compromise on the "official" start time.  I just hope you do, too, but generalizing like you do here, saying that "we can start being 'social' earlier" leads me to believe that you don't.  I mean, all things equal, "earlier" can be switched out of your statement there for "later".  Also, please understand you are talking to a guy who was 10 minutes late to his wedding (the original ceremony we had in Korea, that is).  I'm also one to make the start time of, say, a 2:00-to-4:00 college class, 2:00/2:15-to-4:00/4:15 if the students don't mind (they usually don't; quite the contrary, they usually love it).  I don't wear a watch.  I never have.  Part of the definition of "social" to me is "don't worry about that overrated thing they call time and, moreover, on time", "come as you can when you can as long as it's, of course, before things wrap up".  To me, "social" and "schedule" don't really go together, except very qualifiedly.

All of that having been said, there is an official-ish aspect to the GBRFL Summer Meeting & Draft, a "task" to get done, namely the draft, and that means it can't just be totally free-floating like just a party.  We have to assure we allot ourselves enough time to get it finished, of course.  It's just that you (and Joe) are on tighter schedules and need to be finished earlier because of the distance you are coming (however, I must admit that Joe, to his credit in my mind, rarely chimes in about this).

Quote:
I am not even going to comment on the car accident statement.

Well, that's because that's the point that poses a problem for those who are focused on punctuality, something, as I suggested above, we just have different attitudes about.  Again, I'm more of a "show up as you can within a certain window as long as it's doable" guy.  You are, at least vis-a-vis your circumstances of coming up from Virginia to New Jersey on a Sunday, which is understandable (as is my position, though, although mine is not relative/relativistic), more of a "let's get this started a.s.a.p. and on time" guy.  That's fine!  I get it!  It's just that it's the same go-around every year, which to me indicates... :-/

In any event, saying you are not going to comment on that part of my point does not simply mean, as it may appear, that you are not dignifying the point.  It just more so means that it is a point that doesn't mesh so well with the position you are taking here.  But, that in no way invalidates the point by way of, say, apparent condescension.  That said, I want to point out that I understand that you may not have meant it that way.  But, that doesn't change the fact that the reader may read it that way, Steve.  So, I find it worth teasing out.  I'm not making this post as much to beat you up as I am to clarify things (for any reader).[/offtopic]

ANYway,... the 17th Annual GBRFL Summer Meeting & Draft will be on Sunday, August 16th starting at 12:30 p.m., as usual at Frank's in Tom's River, New Jersey. [smiley=woohoo.gif]

I don't really comment on time because I am just a passenger along for the ride. I have offered to drive, but Steve says that he wants to every year. Fine by me his car gets much better mileage than my truck does. So I just go with the flow.
If it were up to me I would rather do it on a Saturday and do another crazy night at Dave and Busters that we did years and years ago. That was a fricking blast!

12:30 sounds great Steg.
Also Steg I will be bring a check this year to pay for the dues miy friend.

Guys, Joe has once again dutifully gone about putting together our draft grid for this year. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] I have briefly reviewed it, and at least the numbers add up.  I was about to post it/e-mail it out for each of you to review, but, after a little further forethought, [smiley=thinking.gif] I've decided not to make it available until AFTER the Draft Lottery on Monday evening when I can put the first five picks in order, which allows us to avoid the confusion of having two different versions floating out there.

Again, remember protections/cuts are due THIS Sunday night, August 9th, at 11:59 p.m. (EST)!!!  To expedite things, you may simply post them, as a few already have, on the following thread:  http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=53;action=display;num=1248745977.

Guys, Draft day downloadable resources are available on-line...  I've changed up the "Draft Board-style" handouts, opting for a roster layout (mirroring the "Rosters" page at the league web site, but ordered according to the draft order), which, since we will maintain a list of the draft picks here on our GBRFL board, I believe will prove to be a more organized format, especially from an administrative standpoint.  Here they are; I'm also including a printer-friendly version of the (current) draft grid:

Meeting Agenda - http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/gbrfl/2009GBRFLSummerMeeting.doc
