Title: 2011 Summer Meeting & Draft

Hey guys,

Did we pick a date for this year's draft last year?  If so, let me know ASAP.

Yo, D, All!

No we hadn't because of 1) the uncertainty about the 2011 season and 2) (as I reminded you in our last [smiley=phone.gif] conversation) my very tight circumstances this summer based on a) my taking prelim examinations in August, a two-day, 10-hour exam facilitated on Monday, August 15th and Wednesday, the 17th to be exact, and b) my anticipatively having to start work, teaching or whatever, by no later than Monday, August 22nd.  So, we were looking at a VERY tight window within which to schedule the meeting/draft in a way that would make my attendance even possible, though still fairly unlikely.  With that said, my circumstances have somewhat changed, are somewhat changing, such that my visiting New Jersey (and staying for at least a week, thus, making the trip "worth it") for any weekend starting the weekend of August 20th is a possibility, and the situation with the NFL potentially lends us some perhaps much-needed flexibility to help make that happen.  So, if the NFL regular season does get started on time, the weekends of August 20th, 27th and September 3rd are possibilities.  If it does not, the weekends of September 10th, 17th and so on also become possibilities.

Note, though, that I emphasize "possibilities".  The truth is that this year it is unlikely that I will be in attendance.  With that said, I canNOT even think about doing the draft until prelims are out of the way, i.e. not until after August 17th.  That having been said, my guess is that, if this really does end up being a year for which we do not get together, the upside is that doing it solely at a distance via conference call or on-line really opens up possibilities beyond the weekends.  Why not a weekday evening/night if it is going to be over the phone or on-line?  It could even run over a couple evenings/nights if need be.  Anyway, in that case, given what I have stated above, the earliest date we would be looking at is Thursday, August 18th, again, that is for a distance draft.

So, those are the dates to keep in mind.  All in all, including the uncertainty surrounding the NFL, I would actually go against my usual advice this year and suggest that "going with the flow" and being able to adjust a bit on the fly in relation to the unfolding circumstances with the NFL and the Steg probably maximizes our chances of having a timely and successful draft in whatever form it takes but also improves the chances of getting me there, which always serves to enhance the chances of our getting together for it.

In any case, discussion, as far as I am concerned, can commence...  Just please be attentive to the circumstances and according parameters set out above...

Good luck with all that stuff you got going on Steg.

I can do it long distance....my only restriction is I am out the week before Memorial Day.  Will not even get cell service where we are going.

August 27 is out but the champ should otherwise be around the end of August.

Okay, fellas, just to recap here...  First off, real quick, thanks [smiley=bow.gif] to Steve, Pak and DB for responding so quickly and helping me get this narrowed down in as timely of a manner as possible,... and it is quite narrowed down.  Safely assuming Stevo meant Labor Day, in just our first four posts here, one-by-one in consecutive posts, the weekends of July 30th (the absolute earliest we would likely even consider), August 6th, 13th, and September 3rd along with Saturdays, August 20th and the 27th have all been knocked out.  We have also lost all the weekdays through August 19th and those ranging from August 29th through September 2nd.  In terms of weekend days for a "possible" get-together or at least weekend administration of the Draft, all that leaves us with, with any certainty, is Sundays, August 21st and 28th.  So, I am going to now change gears a bit and say that, while I think, as always, that remaining as flexible as possible is a virtue and we should not ignore what alternatives are left (especially given the uncertainty with the NFL), I really think we ought to focus on those two dates; again, they are:  Sunday, August 21st and Sunday, August 28th.

I have a question Steg...
with no CBA yet, and some chaos for everyone in the NFL, and Fantasy world as well...I need to bring something up to the league ...

When to have CUT DOWNS?? Based on the last 2 years... is it (1 month or 2 weeks) before our draft, that cut downs are ... then the lottery is the very next night.

If we "plan"the draft on Aug 28th , then should we start discussing the "cut-down' date??

So should we discuss August 1st, 2011, or look at around Aug 15th? Something in between?

I'm just trying to keep this moving forward.

This was good this was asked NOW.  Regardless of our new approach to the Draft Lottery, the cut-down date has remained ONE WEEK before.  So, if we end up rolling on Sunday, August 28th, cuts would be due on Sunday, August 21st, and the Draft Lottery would take place via conference call sometime during the evening of Monday, August 22nd.  That's that for that.

HOWEVER, the other date currently on the plate is Sunday, August 21st, and that date presents a clusterfuck for me.  Literally, August 14th through the 17th I will be somewhere between half out of my wits and catatonic with no time or, more precisely put, patience to deal with matters of fantasy football.  SO, AND THIS WILL NOT BE UP FOR VOTE (nor would I expect you guys to think it should be given what I have at stake in the real world that week), if we go with that date, things will necessarily have to be adjusted a bit.  I would probably make cuts due on Wednesday, August 17th and have the Draft Lottery on Thursday, August 18th.  PLEASE understand!  Such an adjustment should not be that big of a deal.

Now, later dates may also become a possibility if the NFL gets going late and we adjust on the fly.  So, that is something else to keep in mind.

My schedule is wide open.  I can do whatever everyone else decides upon.

(I've got nothing going on until the last week of August . . . well, nothing except finishing a dissertation.  But I can cram fantasy football anywhere into my writing schedule.)

It is looking like a draft date of Sunday August 28th may be the best choice. Everyone so far seems available for that Sunday except Steve Warner. You said the week before Labor Day wont work for you correct?
What day are you leaving Steve Warner?

Let's try to keep this moving. Thx.

So, the 28th is potentially not good for you, Stevo?  If this ends up being the case, guys, other than the possibility of adjusting to an extended NFL lockout on the the fly and going with a date after Labor Day, all that would be left is Sunday, August 21st and that slightly modified plan with respect to the cut-down date and lottery that I explained above.  Depending on Stevo's answer to my question here, we may want to let the evenings of Tuesday, September 6th and Wednesday, September 7th start to enter our consciousnesses. I have some news about my flexibility for the draft:

I will not be driving up for the draft, before it was a maybe...also:

I will not be available Sat August 27th after 5pm E.S.T. The draft in My personal league is that night and starts at 6pm.

I can do Saturday August 27th if we start at Noon, 1PM, 2PM is all OK.
Also, any other dates and times mentioned can work for me.
We are about 7 weeks away...are we getting closer to narrowing it down??

With the NFL back in biz, I guess it is time for us to officially declare Sunday, August 28th as the date for our 2011 Summer Meeting & Draft!!!  There actually remains a chance that I will be able to attend, but it is all probably going to come down to the last minute for me.  So, that means that there is also a (very good) chance that we are looking at an on-line/conference-call administration of the meeting and draft.  In any event, per what I have been saying all along, I will not really be "footballing" it until Thursday, August 18th.  So, please keep that all in mind.

Anyway, given a Sunday, August 28th meeting and draft date, CUTS will be due at 11:59 p.m. (EST) Sunday, August 21st and the draft lottery will be done by conference call sometime the evening of Monday, August 22nd!!!  Take http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/YaBBImages/pencil.gif note, fellas!!!  In any event, WOO-HOO!  Football is BACK!!! Alright, on to 2011's GBRFL Summer Meeting and Draft... on the fly.  To recap, it is scheduled for Sunday, August 28th and cuts are, therefore, due at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 21st.  As for me, no, unfortunately, as it has turned out, I will not be able to attend this year.  We will have the free conference call service that I will set up for the Draft Lottery, which will be sometime during the evening of Monday, August 22nd, and, of course, we have our trusty message board on "the Gridiron" here.  And, if there is a get-together, I surely wouldn't mind being "Skyped" or "Yahoo! Messengered" in.  So, in any case, setting up the meeting is on you guys this year.  Whatever we end up doing, let's plan to start up around noon or one o'clock (EST).  I will just add this...  I do not know how often Frank, Rob and Trout drop by here.  My suggestion, you may want to get an e-mail out to those guys and/or hit the horn [smiley=phone.gif] so as to get things moving along.  I will be getting on the awards/plaques [smiley=trophy.gif] in due course here.  Don't know, though, if having them by the 28th is going to be possible at this point.  I will get that ball rolling [smiley=rollin.gif] soon. [smiley=onit.gif]

Quote:
When do you get the results?

As for the prelim exam, I think I did well.  We will not find out the results for a MONTH or two, though, which kind of sucks (I thought it would be more like a week or two).  Thing is, as most people (in various disciplines) who have gone through this process would tell you, very few people fail.  There may not be very many "high passes", but pretty much everybody passes... as long as a) they did not have their heads up their asses during the courses they took and b) they made a reasonably good effort studying (something like an average of four to five hours a day for a couple months or so) leading up to the exam.  On both of those scores, I did my due diligence.  Indeed, for a doctoral student (making it to the preliminary/qualifying stage) neither of those should (presumably) be an issue because at this level you are studying the stuff you are because you (presumably) love it.  So, the point being, it is not that the exam is not terrifyingly difficult.  IT IS (WAS)! [smiley=yikes.gif] It is just that most all takers are (presumably) prepared (due to both their own effort and the department's).  The only caveat for me was as I wrote to Stevo up on "the Sidelines" in response to his wishing me good luck and saying that he thought that I will be just fine...

on 08/11/11 at 14:57:45, StegRock wrote:
I think so, too...  But, remember I specialize in all the non-traditional stuff, Eastern thought, and, even on the Western side of the ball, I mainly do Wojtyla.  NONE of this will be on the exam... :( That stuff is just a side dish to the History of Western Philosophy that we have to know.  This is the predicament a person with interests like mine, who wants to study the material in the light of Philosophy and not Religious Studies, has to endure.  Indeed, most professors in Philosophy Departments who do the Eastern stuff do not have their higher degrees, their Ph.D.'s at least, in Philosophy.  They typically have their degrees in Religious Studies or Asian Studies or something like that.  To wit, my guy, Dr. Berger here at SIU has his Ph.D. in Religious Studies, and remember that I too wound up in a "Philosophy and Religion" program for a year of my graduate school career.  Anyway, bottom line, if you want to do the Eastern stuff or a "seemingly" more theological figure like Wojtyla in a Philosophy Department, you have to know that that is a side dish and you still have to know all the regular Philosophy stuff. [smiley=yikes.gif]

Bottom line, though, the feel I have is that I did well! :)

During the Draft Lottery tonight, a very modest request was made to have the Draft start at 2:00 (EST) instead of 1:00.  As we are really just going to be drafting this year and I anticipate things' moving fairly quickly (as in the whole event's not taking more than three hours), I do not see a problem granting this request.  Indeed, it gives us all an extra hour to prep.  So, barring any serious rebuts, I am calling the Summer Meeting & Draft to be on Sunday, August 28th at 2:00 p.m. (EST).  It will be administered via conference call AND on-line here on our GBRFL board on "the Gridiron".  Actually, as was also discussed tonight, it would really be ideal if everybody could be at a computer.  That way everybody can just input his own pick.  Indeed, the whole draft could really just be administered on the board.  That actually would be the most efficient way to go about it, and that is the direction I think we should go in, with the conference call as just a sort of amenity for us to play around on.  But, whatever, it will work itself out how it works itself out...  See yous on Sunday!

I agree. Any best case scenario with the storm track has 85-100 winds atleast 100 miles inland up the coast. Honestly think that is a potential nightmare situation for a long power outage. Let me preface, however, that I wish all you guys in VA, NJ and eastern PA the best if Irene hits you all full-force.  There is an "if" there, though.  I do not want to make light of this, but, indeed, I have watched the forecast go from, last night, category 3 upon landfall in North Carolina/category 2 up towards you guys to, this morning, category 2 upon landfall/category 1 up towards you guys to, now, category 1 upon landfall/tropical depression up towards you guys.  Next thing, it will be sun shower upon landfall and piss on Danny's head, that is to say, a golden shower by the time it gets up to you guys (I am joking; please don't get your panties all in a ruffle here).  Secondly, upon a little reflection, [smiley=uponreview.gif] save for your roof being blown off, your windows being blown out or your house being flooded, a power outage is not an insurmountable obstacle.  Indeed, cell phones will likely still work, and, moreover, even during power outages, lan-line phones usually still work.  Again, assuming it is not pandemonium in your neighborhood beyond a power outage, what else is there better to do than hang out with a bunch of dudes sharing storm stories and doing a fantasy football draft?  In a way, unless it does hit full-force and knock you guys for a total loop (knock on wood), if it is just a hardy storm, this can actually be looked upon as sort of a good thing (aside from Stevo's vacation getting jacked up), a reason to stay inside.

Bottom line, we ain't commencing the Draft unless/until EVERYBODY is present (on the conference call or on-line), and even then the first order of business will be to get the thoughts of those in Irene's path as to what their respective weather is like and how comfortable they feel proceeding with the Draft.  If there is genuine concern at 2 o' clock on Sunday afternoon, voice it and we will figure things out at that time.  If someone is missing, again, we will figure things out at that time.  Probably the most efficient way for us to go about adjusting is via that conference call on Sunday, that is, "if" we even need to.

Do you guys on the east coast have any weather updates for us?  How are we looking?  Are yous thinking the Draft is a go for Sunday afternoon?

Looking really good in Va.   Storm seems to be a lot of rain, but not that high of winds.

Update:  7:15am   Looking good.  Still have power.   Internet is really slow.   Hope all is well up north.

I will be resending the conference-call number to everyone by e-mail.  I also would really appreciate it if people could be behind their computers and able to input their own picks...

Good here on the shore. Alot of cleanup to do but didn't lose power or drown. Good to go for 2.

Heyas...  I know Steve resent the conference call info along with the up-to-the-moment draft grid.  However, unbeknownst to that, I also resent the conference call info.  I also included SOMETHING ELSE.  So, PLEASE, even if you already consulted Warner's e-mail, LOOK AT MINE!  In very short, it deals with this: http://www.fftodayforums.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=386959.
