Title: Houston Starting RB back up in the Air?
Post by Drugrunner on Sep 6th, 2002, 6:49pm
First of All, I can't believe I just justed 15 minutes of my life to chase down news on the Starting RB of an Expansion team.   ::)

A Few Days ago, KFFL posted this Quote from Dom Capers

Quote:
Texans | Allen Named Starter - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
September 4, 2002 17:41:56 PT According to the Associated Press, Houston Texans coach Dom Capers has named RB James Allen the team's starting RB over rookie RB Jonathan Wells. "You go with the veteran guy opening night coming out of the gate but you'll see Jonathan Wells play a lot," Capers said.

Yesterday, that still seemed to be the case from the front page of HoustonProFootball.com

The Texans announced that RB James Allen would get the start Sunday night against the Cowboys, but Dom Capers made it very clear that rookie Jonathan Wells would see plenty of action. (9.05.02)

But today, the Depth Chart was updated on the Offical Texans site with NFL.com, and Wells is listed as the Starter.

And then from the Game review on the Offical Texans Wibesite, you have this blurb that says Wells will start.

Quote:
Carr suffered a bruised right knee in Friday's preseason finale, but is expected to start Sunday. Another rookie will start in fourth-round pick, running back Jonathan Wells.

I thought this was perfectly clear, Dom Capers the Head coach stated that he will start Allen, as he wouldn't start a Rookie in Wells.

I still believe that, but it's looking more and more like the issue is as clear as Mud.

As a Houston local, I can tell you that although Allen will be starting for the team (that IS a definite fact, given that they interviewed GM Casserly on the radio this morning and he reiterated that), Wells will wind up seeing most of the playing time.  Allen has looked terrible in camp and, if he doesn't burst out of the gate, Wells will come in early.  The offensive line has taken a severe beating in recent days, so I wouldn't start either unless you are desperate.
