Brooks, Saints agree to six-year extension

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ESPN.com

The New Orleans Saints stepped up Friday and gave quarterback Aaron Brooks a six-year, $36 million contract extension.

The deal included a $5 million signing bonus.

Brooks, who was the Saints' quarterback during the team's first playoff victory, is entering his second full season as the starter. The Saints had been talking about a $30 million deal, but Patriots quarterback Tom Brady signed a four-year, $30 million contract to raise the stakes.

Included in the Brooks deal is a $5.75 million option bonus in 2003.

Brooks has started 21 games over the past two years and threw 26 touchdown passes last season. Physically, he wore down last year and finished the season weighing around 206 pounds, but he's added weight and strength. His poor finished jumped his interception total to 22 by the end of the season.

Brooks, 26, went to the Saints in exchange for a third-round draft pick from the Green Bay Packers two years ago. Once he got on the field, he started to show the potential of being a future star at quarterback.

I'm surprised no one is posting on this?  Must not be any Brooks Owners around here. ???

Any thoughts about that $5.75 million option bonus in 2003??  Got to believe that is an out for the Saints, a Contract excellerater if you will.  If he plays well, they give him the $5.75M and he is set for life as the Saint's starter for the next 6 years. If he sucks, he keeps his $5mil from this year and enters Free Agency.

What about the thought that now that he is well paid he pulls an Antionio Freeman/Ryan Leaf and stops trying?

Any thoughts?

I hate to base reasoning on "feelings", but I really have a bad "feeling" about Brooks.

Maybe its because he (reputedly) has very little intelligence.

Maybe it is because he doesn't seem to have the intangible qualities such as leadership that make QBs great.

He is obviously talented, however I can see 12 QBs in the league that I would rather have on my team... and isn't that the essence of what FF is about?

Lemme grab my soapbox a moment... FF theoretically is supposed to be about building an ultimate team out of the available NFL players, basically a response to the statement, "it would be awesome to have a team with this QB and that RB and those WRs."  The more we lose sight of this, the less joy this hobby will bring IMHO.  And for my purposes, I don't want this schmuck on my team.

Besides, I have a "feeling" he will be a bust.  ;D

I couldn't disagree more withg bgsfan.

Brooks has produced for fantasy owners for the past year and a half.    Not only does he get owners a ton of passing yards, he gets the rushing yards as well.  I actually see his performance gettting better this year based on the fact that Ricky Williams is gone.  You will see Brooks getting out of the pocket a lot more.

As far as the other stuff, I don't care about it.  Maybe he isn't the smartest QB, but I don't get points for IQ.
