Title: Owens shut down last night, Trouble for all WRs? Post by Drugrunner on Sep 6th, 2002, 7:31pm Something I've been thinking about, Owens better hope that the rest of the defensive backs in the League weren't paying attention last night. Every time he touched the ball (Not often), he was brought down immediately by the DB just reaching down and grabbing his legs. Didn't even touch his upper body, it was dive at the legs and Owens goes down every time. I've been thinking about it since the game last night, and I'm hoping it doesn't work that easily on Moss as I own him in a few Leagues, because DBs are going to be trying it bigtime now. |

Title: Re: Owens shut down last night, Trouble for all WR Post by Drugrunner on Sep 6th, 2002, 7:34pm And while I am at it, I don't know where else to post this but.... The funniest line in last night's game was when the announcer commented on Owens' goal of 2,000 receiving yards this season. Owens had just caught a one yard pass and the announcer said, "only 1,999 to go!" And then one of the other two guys in the booth with Thiesman who said after Owen's total of 1 yard at half time that he was on pace for 34 yards this year. Those Killed me! ;D |

Title: Re: Owens shut down last night, Trouble for all WR Post by StegRock on Sep 6th, 2002, 8:02pm I will say one thing with regards to this. J. J. Stokes, once again, contrary to the preseason hype, did not provide much "relief" from the highly vaunted Giants secondary. ::) HE definitely sucks! |

Title: Re: Owens shut down last night, Trouble for all WR Post by PhantasyPhilly on Sep 6th, 2002, 8:21pm I think StegRock hit the nail on the head. The reason it was so easy to shut Owens down is that they could double-team him all night and not have to worry about Stokes on the other side. The Giants have a good enough D to do that. Their line was (for the most part) able to hold the reins on the SF RBBC, so more attention could be placed on Owens. (Plus I think Stoutmire got into his head a bit with the licks he put on Owens.) |

Title: Re: Owens shut down last night, Trouble for all WR Post by Jay on Sep 6th, 2002, 9:12pm Stokes may not have provided much of a receiving presence on the other side, but his downfield blocking was incredible last night, and he sprung the two biggest gains of the night with his blocks, so it's tough to really criticize him too badly. |

Remember, Jay, I am not getting to see the games. I am lucky if I can time it to listen to a little bit via NFL.com audio. At any rate, his receiving is what is in question here. I did hear through the grapevine that he through some great downfield blocks, kind of even vaguely remember the radiocasters saying something, but, bottom line, his value as a fantasy football wide receiver remains bleak. |
