Title: First week surprises - real or aberration?
Post by bgsgfan on Sep 8th, 2002, 5:44pm
Vick, Travis Henry and others have exploded in the first week while Owens, Garcia and others have impoded.

Pick a single surprise and and tell either why it will continue throughout the season or was a one-game aberration. I'll give it the first shot.

Rod Gardner, WR Washington Redskins
7 rec. 131 yds 1 TD

The Redskins passing offense faces one of the easiest schedules this year, making this game against the weak Cardinals the rule rather than the exception.  There are 3 or 4 good WR on the team, and one stud in the making, Rod Gardner.  He will continue to punish defenses all season.

Is Gardner really a surprise?  He is the best receiver on a team that throws early and often...

Mild surprise.  I'll go out on a limb and predict him to be a top 5 FF receiver this year.  [smiley=gonecrazy.gif]  That qualify as a surprise now?  ;)

OK - this definitely qualifies as a surprise:

Kelly Holcomb, QB Browns
27/39 for 326yards 3 TDs and 0 Ints

Holcomb absolutely blew up against KC and looked very good.  But there is a reason he is a career backup folks.  Don't go dropping Garcia for Holcomb... in fact leave him off your roster totally as he is guaranteed to come back to earth next week as Cincinatti rebounds.

Gerner wasn't a surprise if to everyone.   ;D

If you check the players of the week thread, I predicted him to explode, and called him my top WR of the Week. ;D

Quote:
WR -  BREAKOUT PLAYER OF THE WEEK ALERT  The key to rattling Spurrier’s Fun ‘n Gun is putting pressure on the QB and the Cardinals don’t to that.   Arizona only tallied 19 sacks for all of last year and still don’t have a proven pass rusher.  My WR of the Week Rod Gardner at 6’ 2” and 215lbs has the size to over power people.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Seriously, I would have picked him too, but I had already gotten Matthews and didn't want 2 Wash players.  Seriously. ;D

Two words:  "Quincy" and "Morgan"!!! :o :o  You can talk about Gardner, Holcolm, Henry or whomever, but Morgan is by far the biggest surprise for week 1.  He had like 9 catches for 150+ yards and 2 TDs!!! :o  I think he just matched his last years totals in week 1!!!  The biggest question, will he keep doing it?

Quincy Morgan was the biggest surpise of the week on offense.  Yes, I think he will keep it going in the long run, in the sense that I think he is being groomed to be the real #1 in that offense.  How things will go for him for the rest of this year with Couch's condition... remains to be seen.  He's definitely a keeper, but I wouldn't count on him as a week-in-week-out starter [ijust yet, and this is coming from a guy who picked him in free-agency this week ;) (by the way, we don't have a bullshit race to the clicker pick-up process... lineups must be submitted by the kickoff of the first game(s) of the week... first to worst for two rounds... to see what I mean click here (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/gbrfl/transactions.htm)... I would recommend conducting free-agency this way to all).

BIG SURPRISE, but, honestly, it wasn't to Steggie here, was the Broncos Run-D and "D" overall.  Now here is a Week 1 occurrence that will become a regular re-occurrence, particularly when they play in the Mile High city.  When they are at home, I don't think there will be any better play in the league.  When they are away..., we'll have to see.  They will get a good test in San Francisco next week against a unit that struggled in Week 1 against a "D" that should be somewhat on the "D"-cline.  It will be interesting to see how Denver fairs against them in an away game.  But, at HOME, bank on it!  They are [smiley=money.gif] !  Ray Rhodes is starting to work his magic! ;D All that said, Mr. Genius here, who even made a low-scoring prediction for the Broncos-Rams game, went against his gut and played "matchup" D, which is a dangerous practice, and went with the Bengals. :-[ Fuck! >:( Those suckers cost me one of my two games this week in the GBRFL (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/)!

By the way, great thread idea, bgsgfan! [smiley=smileythumbsup.gif] Let's try to make a thread of this type a regular occurrence around here.  I am trying to establish some trademarks for "the Gridiron"!  This one is all yours to deal with, my friend!  Thanks!

Sounds good, and thanks for the thanx  ;D

Robert Edwards - easy to dismiss this as an aberration, right!  Well, maybe not.  Edwards will be a solid producer as a third down back and is a great backup.  Ricky Williams has had nagging injury problems in the past.  Definitely a good guy to have on your bench as he will produce in this offense if RW goes down and will give you some points every week in deep leagues.

Guess I am old school, but I expect the skins, texans etc. to come back to earth this week.  Seems like their are always the flash in the pan player in the first week each year.  I saw an interview with Madden in shich he said much the same.  Think I will see what kind of trades I can get for Ownes and dillon while they are in dog house.  my 2cts.

Now is not the time to trade Owens or Dillon.  (Using your philosophy, they should return to their old ways after the week 1 aberration.)    [smiley=caughtonthecan.gif]

Now IS the time to try to steal players like Owens or Dillon off someone else's roster while they might be upset with them.  Try to find someone on your roster who had an incredible week--someone who you don't expect to perform like that week in week out--and trade them now while their value is inflated.   [smiley=greedy.gif]

Thanks for dropping the ball, Steggie.  I could use all the wins I can in the GBRFL.  HOwever, you could have played any D this week and still lost to me, no matter how many TDs Priest had.

My surprise week one was AMANI TOOMER.  I played him on a hunch and he stepped up big.  The Giants offense may be more open this year and Toomer and Tiki will benefit at least with yards.

I'll take a stab at Henry.

I think he's going to be the real deal this year.   Not to expect 3 td's every week, but I really think that he'll be pretty consistent this year in getting close to 100 combined  and a touch ...

Philly,  that is what I meant.  I do not have Owens or dillon but I am going to chat with the gus that do have them to see if they are willing to give them up cheap.
