Title: Steelers week 2 analysis Post by bgsgfan on Sep 13th, 2002, 11:32am Almost everyone saw the humiliating loss the Stillers sufferred to NE on Monday. NE forced a passing contest as they went no-huddle shotgun most of the game and had 25 straight passes at one point :o and shut down the Steelers running game. Tim Lewis (Pit's defensive coordinator) said that this scheme was actually employed first by the Bengals at the end of last season (when they shredded the Steelers for approx. 400 passing yards). Bill Callahan has stated that he does not have the personnel to run the same scheme and his 6 man RBBC would all be knocking down his door if he did. However, contrary to public opinion, head coaches in the NFL are not stupid, so look for the Raiders to attempt to make this the same type of game. QB: Kordell Stewart It is my contention that Kordell will have a great FF season and build upon his success last year. I have responded to arguments citing his '98 collapse by saying he did not experience the turnover in personnel, coaches, and systems this year that he did then. I also contend that the depth at WR this year for Pit will help his numbers more than they will individually help Plex, Ward, or Randel-El. I am officially still behind Kordell :o. I believe he will bounce back this week and not make the early mental errors he made vs. NE. 20 of 27 225 yards 1 TD 0 Ints 40 yds rushing 0 TDs RBs The Bus should continue to average about 20-25 carries per game. Amos will get the passing downs and be in the game for a full series or two. Fu will get spot work and be used at times with Amos in the FB role. Bettis 20 carries for 70 yards 0 TDs 2 catches for 15 yards Amos 7 carries for 28 yards 0 TDs 3 catches for 25 yards Fu 2 carries for 15 yards 1 TD 2 catches for 15 yards WRs Plax had 3 balls go his way on Monday night. One was badly overthrown at the beginning of the game, one was inches from a TD and one resulted in his only catch. I have continuously watrned that he will be an inconsistent player this year while slightly improving on his overall stats from last year. His effectiveness will be greatly determined by how teams play him. Ward had a good game last week and appears to be fully recoverred from his appendectomy. I was very surprised to see how much Randel-El was used in his first game as a rookie. Changing my tune slightly on him based on this usage, however he will not beat out either Plax or Ward this year. The distribution between these 3 will be greatly effected by how the Raiders play Plax. I think they will look to shut him down and once again Ward and Randel-El will benefit. Note to those who get points for return yards. Randel-El will be filling in for Poteat as a KR this week and will probably split the KR with Lee Mays Plexico Burress: 2 catches for 45 yards 1 TD Ward 5 catches for 50 yards, 1 carry for 10 yards Randel-El 4 catches for 50 yards, 1 carry for -2 yards, 1 return for TD :o TE Bruener caught 4 balls last week for 25 yards. That is about half a season's work for him. He is capable as a receiver (owning some records from his college days at Washington) but has rarely been used. Tuman is also a capable pass catching TE and if the trend continues these 2 will probably split the receptions. Still a bad play, but I'll watch to see if Pit's trends are changing and keep yenz informed. TEs (as a group) 2 catches 15 yards K Peterson missed his only FG try on Monday. Please Lord, don't let this be Kris Brown revisited. I think my prayers will be answered. Peterson 2 FGs, 3 EP Defense: Their pride is hurt. NFL defensive ROY Kendrell Bell will also sit this game out. Don't count on this defense being humiliated 2 weeks in a row, even though they face a stiff challenge this week. 300 total yards against, 3 sacks, 2 turnovers forced Game prediction: Pittsburgh 27 Raiders 20. |

Pitt is notoriuos for slow starts and the Raiderettes already got a big head after beating a horrible Seattle team. Bill Kowher will have his team much more prepaired and the will look like a completly different team. |

Those defenders (at least a good number of them) are old. If Pitt sticks to pounding them with the run, everything else will fall into place. That said, nobody on the squad makes a great start. I see a low scoring, time control type of game. |

I am not proud of my projections, however I believe my overall analysis for the year for these guys is still accurate.
