Title: Philadelphia Eagles Week 2 Analysis
Post by PhantasyPhilly on Sep 14th, 2002, 10:46am
This is a tough one to call.

The Eagles and Redskins ALWAYS have close games and I don't foresee anything different about this one.

The Eagles have been tremendous over the past couple years coming off a loss.  Not sure the exact record, but look it up - it's a definite trend.

The Redskins showed off a balanced and impressive offense last week, albeit against some college team from the southwest.

QB:
McNabb - Will be pressured all night long.  Will make a big mistake or two, but will also respond with some big plays. (245 passyds, 50 rushyds, 2 passTDs, 1 INT)

RBBC:
Staley - Will be important in the game because of his role as a check-down receiver. (20 rushyds, 60 recyds, 1 TD)
Levens - Will get some time and a few carries.  (25 rushyds, 10 recyds)
Westbrook - Showed last week that he is the real thing and can sustain drives running the ball.  (55 rushyds, 15 recyds, 1 TD)

WR:
Thrash - Is still the go-to guy against his former mates.  (55 recyds, 15 rushyds)
Pinkston - Not worth a roster spot.  Will get phased out as Freeman steps up.  (30 recyds)
Freeman - Should get a few more looks this week.  (60 recyds)

TE:
Lewis - Will get his looks.  Still a solid starter week-in week-out.  (45 recyds, 1 TD)

K:
Akers - No brainer here.  Still the best in the league IMHO.  (3xp, 2-2 FGs)

Def:
Eagles - Be careful.  D-Line is falling apart.  They only have 2 solid starters who are not injured.  Kirkland showed some effects of age/weight and SAM LB Carlos Emmons is a little banged up.  Backfield will see the (timely) return of Troy Vincent this week and should be more solid than last week.  The Eagles D will get 3-4 turnovers and a couple sacks, but will also give up a lot of yards.  Might be a good week to use the reserve D if they have a good matchup.

Thanks philly.  I am going brain dead second guessing McNabb or Griese this week.  Think I will go with McNabb based on your info.

Like others have said, McNabb will NOT get benched during the game.  Griese might.  If you're in a yardage league, McNabb won't be bad choice for you.

PhillyPhantasy, GREAT job here!  The game is currently underway and it appears that the Redskins are getting a dose of reality. [smiley=doseofreality.gif] You may want to follow Jetdoc and bgsgfan's lead and re-visit this after the game.  Anyway, thanks for contributing to the site.

WRONG!  I guess even I overestimated the Skins a bit.

The trend continues.

I should have paid more attention to that.

QB:
McNabb - Will be pressured all night long.  Will make a big mistake or two, but will also respond with some big plays. (245 passyds, 50 rushyds, 2 passTDs, 1 INT) 292 PaYds, 36 RuYds, 2 PaTD/1 RuTD, 0 INT - Not too far off.  Those who started him will be happy.

RBBC:
Staley - Will be important in the game because of his role as a check-down receiver. (20 rushyds, 60 recyds, 1 TD) 55 RuYds, 57 ReYds, 0 TD - Got lots of mop-up carries in the 4th Q.
Levens - Will get some time and a few carries.  (25 rushyds, 10 recyds) 65 RuTds, -2 ReYds, 1 TD - I would have been about right if Arrington made the tackle on that 40 yd TD run.
Westbrook - Showed last week that he is the real thing and can sustain drives running the ball.  (55 rushyds, 15 recyds, 1 TD) 12 RuYds, 20 ReYds, 0 TD - I'm surprised he didn't get more work.  That'll be the problem with predicting the Eagles O this year...

WR:
Thrash - Is still the go-to guy against his former mates.  (55 recyds, 15 rushyds) 107 ReYds, 1 TD - More go-to than I expected.
Pinkston - Not worth a roster spot.  Will get phased out as Freeman steps up.  (30 recyds) 36 ReYds - BINGO.
Freeman - Should get a few more looks this week.  (60 recyds) 35 ReYds - He was involved early and then disappeared.  If you're in a deep league, grab him if he's available.

TE:
Lewis - Will get his looks.  Still a solid starter week-in week-out.  (45 recyds, 1 TD) 14 ReYds, 0 TDs - Back-up TE was more of a factor in this game, getting the TD call in the 1st half.

K:
Akers - No brainer here.  Still the best in the league IMHO.  (3xp, 2-2 FGs) 4-4 XPs, 3-3 FGs - I stand behind my statement about him being the best in the league.

OK, this is the one I really blew.  If you didn't start the Eagles D because of me, I apologize.  I severely underestimated their value this week.  Also, keep in mind that, even though I am #1 in my league this year, I finished dead last just a year ago, so I am not infallible.   ::)
