Title: New York Jets - Week Seven Analysis Post by Jetdoc on Oct 18th, 2002, 5:08pm Alright, so I'm a glutton for punishment. This is a critical game for the J-E-T-S this week, so I thought you guys would appreciate an analysis of certain key positions that you actually might be considering starting this week. The Jets face a TERRIBLE defense in the Vikings, and on top of that they face them AT HOME. AFTER A BYE WEEK. That does not bode well for the men in purple this week, as the Jet offense finally got things going before the bye. At least the Jet defense really sucks, so that should keep the offense on the field enough to result in a high scoring game. Quarterbacks Chad Pennington IS the man in New York, and is getting all the hype that he is this year's Tom Brady. Maybe it's my conservative side, maybe it's common sense, but Pennington has NOT looked anywhere near as good as Brady did in his preseason and in his debut. That said, however, Pennington is set up for serious success this week. Pennington should be on your trading block after this week while his stock is high. The only other thing that worries me about Pennington is that he could face the dreaded "second start" syndrome, in that teams actually have a week of film to review on the guy now, so he might not be as successful as his debut. Chad Pennington - 280 yards passing, 2 TDs, 2 INTs; 20 yards rushing, 0 TDs Runningbacks Ahhh....it's nice to see Curtis Martin back in form. No, he's not 100% and yes, he faced a weak defense in his last game. But what is different about this game? The defense he is facing is WORSE. I expect that the Jets will give CuMar the ball a lot more than in previous games, partially to take some of the pressure off of Junior tossing the rock. This game is not a true test for Martin, but is a good indicator that if he doesn't get off this game, he might not return to his former self all year. LaMont Jordan is moved back to his role as backup/breather for Martin, so don't expect much from him unless the game gets out of hand (which I predict it won't). Curtis Martin - 140 rushing yards, 1 TD; 30 receiving yards, 0 TDs LaMont Jordan - 10 rushing yards, 0 TD; 10 receiving yards, 0 TDs Richie Anderson - 0 rushing yards, 0 TD; 30 receiving yards, 0 TDs Wide Receivers Laverneous Coles finally emerged from his black hole of a fantasy season a couple of weeks ago as the Jets passing offense was revived with the start of the Pennington era. Coles is a lock for a start this week, because even if the Viking D tries to double team him, he is still going to see some wide open looks as the inferior Viking Dbacks feel more exposed than a gaspumper in Maryland. Wayne Chrebet is supposed to make his return this week, but I wouldn't expect great things from him as he continues to nurse his injuries. Santana Moss is one of those unpredictable WR's in a similar mold to that of JJ Stokes...you figure that he would see great numbers in a good passing offense, but he does one week and disappears the next. I wouldn't start Moss this week unless you are a brave man....it's feast or famine with him. Laverneous Coles - 9 receptions, 130 yards, 1 TD Wayne Chrebet - 3 receptions, 20 yards, 0 TD Santana Moss - 3 receptions, 40 yards, 0 TD Anthony Becht - 3 receptions, 20 yards, 1 TD Overall, I expect a dismal display of defense this weekend, so look for the equivalent of a low scoring NBA game this week... J-E-T-S 35, Vikings 31 Betting advice....TAKE THE OVER. |

They wanted Pennington to beat them, and he did. Martin also left the game for a period of time due to "dizziness"...apparently, Pennington asked him something about Mike Tice and he thought he said "Mike Tyson". Martin then took himself out of the game. It looks like Martin is almost 100% again, but his lack of outstanding production against a weak Viking D has to concern FF owners. Laverneous Coles - 6 receptions, 86 yards, 1 TD Wayne Chrebet - 4 receptions, 53 yards, 0 TD Santana Moss - 5 receptions, 111 yards, 0 TD Did I tell you that Santana Moss is irratic, or what? He truly is the JJ Stokes of the Jets. Moss had a very good game, mainly because the Vikings gave him WIDE open looks as they tried to stop the run and Coles. Coles still had a productive game despite the double coverages he was seeing (I was a little short on the yards since they went to Moss). Overall, a very productive game for the Jets wideouts. Well, again I overestimated the Vikings' ability to move the ball on the Jets defense, so the game was lower scoring and definitely not as close as I predicted. Jets 20, Vikings 7 |
