Title: Mike Martz is an idiot
Post by Pakman on Nov 11th, 2002, 1:57pm
If Mike Martz starts Warner over Bulger, he's an idiot.  The Rams were 0-5 with Warner as the starter and the best thing that happened to that team was Warner getting injured.  :o

Because he got injured, the Rams were forced to go back to Marshall ball and look at the results.    Once defenses were forced to stop Marshall, they were able to throw the ball downfield.

The team is on a roll and Bulger seems to have developed a rapport with his receivers.  Bringing a rusty Warner back in will disrupt any chemistry that the team has developed and do you really think that Warner will be satisfied with handing the ball off to Marshall.  I think not.

Even before he got injured, Warner was pressing too hard and didn't get the job done.

What do you guys think?

As to Martz being an idiot, I fully concurr. Strickly hunch with a bit of Bulger owner bias thrown in, but I see Bulger getting the Monday night nod. From ther you have to bring Warner back and at least give him a shot. Pretty firm believer myself in not losing your job to injury. The dilema for Martz will be if Warner does not keep the offense going as is. They'll write off one bad game but if he struggles in two, then it will get deservedly ugly.

I fully concur that Mike Martz is a retard.   However, I agree with his decision to put Warner back in.   Sure, Bulger had a huge game this week, but he hadn't been particularly spectacular to that point.    Good, but not outstanding.     Warner got them to the big game twice.    You can't argue with that.

Here's hoping that they bring Warner back.  I picked him up off waivers last week just in case.

My starter (who has done a good job for me all year) is McNair and I'm scared he won't last many more weeks with all those little nagging injuries.

Looks like Bulger gets one more start...

ST. LOUIS -- Marc Bulger will get one more start for the St. Louis Rams before Kurt Warner returns from a broken pinkie.

Warner, who has missed five games, resumed throwing last Thursday and tossed several 40-yarders before the Rams' game against San Diego on Sunday.

Coach Mike Martz said Monday that doctors don't want to rush Warner back into action, but he'll be the backup next Monday night against the Bears.

"After talking to the doctors, they were in agreement,'' Martz said. "It's just too risky to start him and not get that finger banged around. This will give him that extra week to heal.''

Warner said his finger is feeling better every day, and he's scheduled to start taking snaps again this week. Martz said Bulger would get the bulk of the practice reps, but said Warner would run some of the scout-team offense.

"I'm going to practice and prepare like I'm going to play on Monday,'' Warner said. "If (Martz) decides something or the doctors say I shouldn't go until the next week, I'll do the next week.''

Bulger had a team-record 36 completions for 453 yards -- fourth-best in franchise history -- in Sunday's 28-24 come-from-behind victory over the Chargers. He threw two of his four touchdown passes in the final 3:06, both to Isaac Bruce.

Bulger has led the Rams to four straight victories in Warner's absence. He leads the NFL with a 107.4 passer rating, well ahead of runner-up Brett Favre's 101.7.

The Rams were 0-4 under Warner, the NFL's MVP last year for the second time in three years.

Of course Warner was playing with a different offensive line at the beginning of the season.  Plus Martz wasn't using Faulk nearly as much then.

I think he should get the job back when he is 100% healthy.

I own both Warner and Bulger in my league and have been watching the games so far, and here's my take.  Bulger has looked like the best QB in the league so far.  He's looked better than Bledsoe and right up there with Garcia/Favre.  He's thrown the deep ball accurately when needed and relegated himself to throwing to Faulk and others underneath as his bread and butter.  I haven't seen every game, but I can't remember him throwing a bad pass.  Warner hasn't lost his job to injury, he's lost his job to a better quarterback (this year).

I believe the downfall was last year.  Last year they got away with throwing downfield on every play, giving up 4 INT's a game, and still winning enough to make it to the superbowl.  Suddenly, Warner&Martz believed their system was so good (Martz's fault on this) that the turnovers were worth "The Greatest Show on Turf".  As the Superbowl proved, it wasn't.  This year is even tougher.  There's no way you can just give up turnovers while missing a guy like Aeneas Williams on D and expect to get the ball back without them putting up 7.  Just like the NEP stuck with Brady, the NOS stuck with Brooks, and the Ravens SHOULD have stuck with Dilfer, the STL Rams should stick with Bulger.

How do you bench a guy who has only won every game he's lead his team on the field in, been the highest rated passer in the last 4 games, and is showing the arm strength and accuracy Kurt Warner hasn't shown since early 2001.

Of course, Warner has a ring.  But if Martz brings in Warner and they lose, bumping them from the playoffs, Martz is officially the biggest idiot in the NFL.  Honestly, this could be his job on the line with this call.  It was a smart move job-security-wise to let Bulger start another week.  All he needs from Bulger is one bad week to justify putting Warner back in and one bad week from Warner returning too early to justify his departure from the Rams after this season.

I say keep Bulger, but I can also see the argument for bringing Warner back.  I'll say this though:

While Warner is the highest rated passer in the history of the NFL in his seasons so far, both Green and Bulger have had higher passer ratings in relief of him in 2000 and 2002.

So what makes him so valuable if the backups do better?

I think Martz could put just about any QB in that system and do well, except maybe Jamie Martin!!

look at the evidence..
Warner was a grocery store stockboy.. now he's maybe a hall of famer.. that pains me to say that. I hate him and his wife, who has the same haircut as he does.
I could never start him this year.. There has to be something more wrong with him to have stats like this..1 TD and 8 INTS.. you got guts if you can.
Trent Green hasn't done squat anywhere except there.
Bulger wasn't exactly a stud at West Virginia. I watched him at least a dozen times and never was impressed. In fact I questioned his decision making quite a few times. And he had talent around him... Amos Zereoue, Jerry Porter. If I could have compared him to an NFL QB.. it would have been Trent Green. The Green of last year.

We'll see how Bulger does this week without Marshall, Marshall, Marshall... my guess is there won't be four touchdowns!!

However, the NFL has turned into a passing league.. Everyone who lines up three and four WR sets scores and wins.. very few teams have three good corners. most do not have two.

Clearly Rich Gannon is the best FF QB this year. How can he not be with 2 hrs to look down field for an open guy. Warner's problem is that he thinks he and his receivers are so damn good that he can force the ball in at any time. However, that being said, he is still a better option than Bulger...just check the resume.

In my mind it's not a question of if Warner gets the starting job back, but how long does he keep it if he struggles as he did pre-injury. As someone said in this thread, or somewhere else, there was no hesitation on Martz's part to sit Jamie Martin after only one complete game. Does he have the stones to put Warner back on the bench if he's suckin'. There is very little room for hesitation if the Rams are to climb back into the playoff hunt. All that said, I think we see the last of Bulger monday night, barring further injury to Warner.
