EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants came up with a quick fix for their depleted receiving corps, agreeing to contract terms with Herman Moore on Tuesday.

The Detroit Lions' all-time leading receiver is 33. He would be paid $308,824 to finish the season, based on a $750,000 salary.

"He took a physical and did some stuff on the field and they said it was fantastic," Bradley Blank, Moore's agent, said. "He has agreed to sign a deal."

Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi had no comment.

Moore hasn't played since being put on injured reserve by the Lions early last season with a hip injury. But Blank said the NFL's record holder for receptions in a season (123 in 1995) is perfectly healthy.

"He hurt his hip in the second week of last season and they put him on injured reserve," Blank said. "The funny thing was there was a big controversy. He was ready to play a week after they put him on injured reserve. The NFL came in and did a whole investigation and said it was misdiagnosed."

The Giants are desperate for receivers after losing Ike Hilliard (shoulder) and Tim Carter (Achilles' tendon) with season-ending injuries in the last three weeks. Ron Dixon, Hilliard's replacement, sprained a knee Sunday and is expected to miss two weeks.

That left Amani Toomer and rookie Daryl Jones as the only healthy receivers on the roster. Sean Bennett has switched from halfback to wideout.

The 10th pick overall in the 1991 draft, Moore was one of the most feared receivers in the game in his prime. The 6-foot-4 Virginia product caught 670 passes for 9,174 yards and 62 TDs in 11 seasons with the Lions.

Detroit placed him on waivers on June 3 in a salary cap move.

The free agent worked out for Pittsburgh earlier this year, but Blank said Moore wasn't interested in being a mentor for the Steelers' younger receivers.

"He likes two things about the Giants," Blank said. "One is they are a game out of first place, and the second thing is he is going to put the uniform on. He wants to play the game. In Pittsburgh they wanted him to sit on the bench and be a coach."

The Giants probably will also sign Derek Dorris, who was cut late in training camp.

Tony Simmons, the Patriots' second-round pick in 1998, and Larry Parker, the Chiefs' fourth-round pick in 1999, also worked out for the Giants on Tuesday.

wow! Herman Moore. More of Jerry's kids, I guess. No idea what kind of condition Larry Parker has kept himself in, but seemed like a guy with potential.

HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/newsstand.htm)", I thought this, from the New York Post, was the most telling of all of what I read in the New York/New Jersey local dailies regarding Moore:

"Moore is a huge target at 6-foot-4, 218 pounds. Once a star, he caught more than 100 passes in three consecutive seasons (1994-96) for the Lions. He is said to have fallen sharply from his peak. The Giants, however, are desperate."

Seems like i recall several debates years ago about who was the best conditioned athlete in football Rice or Moore. Rice is going strong at 40. Moore could have several productive years yet. [smiley=hmmmm.gif]
