Title: Heads up on W. Green Post by ugley on Nov 16th, 2002, 9:47pm Just read in a cleve. paper B. Davis stated he is "optomistic" Green will take over in the near future. For "what ever" that,s worth. [smiley=frustrated.gif] |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by BarnabyWilde on Nov 16th, 2002, 11:04pm I hope so. I was beginning to think I wasted my rookie exemption pick on him! >:( |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by StegRock on Nov 16th, 2002, 11:22pm Yea, right about now he is going to come on when he is actually probably about ready to hit the proverbial "rookie wall." Whatever... I'll believe it when I see it! [smiley=evil.gif] All of that having been said, I have Jamel White on my roster. [smiley=angel.gif] |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by BALLHOG on Nov 17th, 2002, 12:01am This guy had every oppoutunity to be the man earlier in the year and did nothing. He got beat out by Jamel White who played secong fiddle to James Jackson last year. Don't get your hopes up this guy blows. |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by FourTwoOh on Nov 17th, 2002, 1:34am true dat, BGD! I like taking a rookie rb or wr every year, but rarely both on the same squad. Little self pattin' on the back here This years choice for me was a heavy dose of Portis. I personally wrote Terell off as early as one of the May mini camps. A three day mini camp and he was immediately experienceing swelling and shit. Got Portis in three of the four drafts, mid-rounds 8th, 9th at the earliest, as two of the drafts began before the first preseason game. The one I did not snatch him in was a draft held the final sunday before the regular season opener and the Portis hype machine was in full swing. Don't recall which round exactly but 4th or 5th and that was a liitle to rich for my blood. Now if only more of my decisions worked out so sweet. [smiley=cheers.gif] |

It's good to know we're going to have a new Thomas Jones now that the original will probably be practice squad material at the end of this year. |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by DOLFAN on Nov 18th, 2002, 9:52pm Green look good overall. He looked hesitant at times too though. He did ok i blocking schemes. I think that and his catching ability, PLUS other growing pains hurts him. He will be good, its just of matter of when???? |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by mattman on Nov 19th, 2002, 6:24am I think Green still has a long way to go before he will become (if ever) a feature fantasy back. Jamel White has shown he can get in the end zone and that's where it matters. I don't see green doing anything for the rest of this year, however I do see him making some impact next year. ;) |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by Pakman on Nov 19th, 2002, 5:45pm I have had him on my roster all year and he's been a huge bust. :'( I actually played him this week because I got sick of Thomas Jones. ;D Anyways, I think that Butch Davis and the higher ups in the organization will give Willie Green every opportunity to succeed (as they have done all year) because they need to find out if he is going to be the man next year. By the way, don't forget that he played against the Bungles D ;D |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by StegRock on Nov 20th, 2002, 6:24am Great commentary here! I really like what Pak just wrote. Quite objective! I think he is telling it straight... very objective in mentioning that he played against the Bengals this week. Background... Pakman has William Green, took him high in this year's draft. That makes his quite unbiased commentary that much more valuable. I think they are going to give him opportunities to. He is who they want to succeed. I just do not think he will. His offseason "habits" indicated that to me. As for Jamel White, I like the guy. That said, he has "Warrick Dunn/Tiki Barber-itus." He really is considered and has been dubbed a third-down back as it stands right now. Will he go the way of Dunn, sporatically good, or Barber, consistently solid? I think that remains to be seen. But, I do think we saw in recent weeks that he, probably based on his size, struggles running the ball against good run defenses/defenses with a big front four/three, a (general) vice of Dunn's. Back to Green, the one thing I disagree with on this thread (sorry B. G. D.) is the comparison to Holmes. Holmes was not the highly touted player coming out that Green was. I honestly do not know where all this talk of Holmes's ever being a bust came from. He was actually more of a "come out of nowhere" player. He was originally slated to back up Errict Rhett in Baltimore in 1998. He got playing time after Rhett went down with an injury. He ran for (an unexpected) 1,000+ yards in like 10 games, granted a lot was in three or so of them, but his numbers were pretty darn good each game. Come 1999, he was still splitting time with Rhett. In 2000, they replaced him with Jamal Lewis. Maybe from a "fantasy-only" perspective, he was "a bust" after what fantasy footballers expected after that 10-game tear in 1998, but the truth is on the gridiron he just was not getting the opportunities. A player's circumstances must be factored in when playing fantasy football. You can't just dub a guy "a bust" because his stats are not "fantasy-friendly." |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by ColaSteeler on Nov 21st, 2002, 8:14pm To be honest I think I prefer J. White in his 3rd down back role (for FF purposes). He has excelled in this role, and this is when he is most dangerous - as a pass catcher out of the backfield. He had a poor showing when he got the chance to start (albeit it was 1 game, and he still did better than Willie Green), but when defenses settle down and think they have an easy day against Green, then White blazes them with his speed. At least in leagues that give 1 point per reception (as mine does), J. White is a pretty good backup, and is a play when the matchup permits. |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by BarnabyWilde on Nov 24th, 2002, 4:57pm Okay, now what? 114 yards vs a decent Saints defense. Is he starting to catch a clue on how to run in the NFL? Starting to think this guy can play now!! |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by DJ88Packerfan on Nov 27th, 2002, 2:04am I think sometimes people forget that every NFL player is different- the speed at which they learn a system, the confidence they have in their own ability to play within a system. William Greens' progress reminds me of Michael Bennett from last year. You knew the guy had the tools to succeed, but he seemed to not be catching on as far as following his blockers went. Bennett showed some promise towards the end of the year, and now this year looks like a potential star in the making. This is where Green is headed, IMO. I realize QB's and WR's are "supposed" to be the players that take 2-3 years to catch on, and RB's usually are studs right away, or not at all. However, that is not ALWAYS the case, and I do have faith that Green will finish the year strong. BTW, I selected WG at 6.9 in a 12 man TD-only draft, cut him after week 5, picked him back up after week 8 (based on a gut feeling, not actual production at that point). I may finally start him this week, but would have to sit Chad Johnson or Randy Moss to do it. Tough call. |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by Philly on Nov 27th, 2002, 9:32am Green was still sitting on the free agent list this week, so I dropped Barlow and grabbed him. I figure that he'll still ride the pine for me, but this will keep any potential opponents from using him against me. The Saints defense, while better than the Bungles, is still deplorable. I'll be interested to see how he does against the Carolina defense this weekend. They've fallen off from their early success, but they're still better than what he's seen the past two weeks. |

Title: Re: Heads up on W. Green Post by BarnabyWilde on Dec 2nd, 2002, 1:34pm Another solid outing for Green. (94 yards) Looks like he will turn out to be ok after all. Maybe a decent number 2 or solid number 3 RB on my fantasy squad next season... |
