Title: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by StegRock on Jan 5th, 2003, 2:04pm Under what circumstances does he retire? Under what circumstances does he stay? What do you all think? I will give my take later. |

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by Walker_Boh on Jan 5th, 2003, 3:35pm I think he plays regardless of what happens this year. Rice is the greatest of all time and coming off the best season he's had in quite a while. He was "too old" when he left the Niners, yet he still plays at a pro-bowl level. The Raiders should be competitive again next season and I see no reason why he wouldn't come back. Edited for punctuation problems |

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by FourTwoOh on Jan 5th, 2003, 6:04pm I'm no capologist, but the Raiders appear to be in serious trouble. I just don't know the specifics well enough to know for sure, but long story short, he'll retire before he switches teams again. |

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by BarnabyWilde on Jan 6th, 2003, 4:39pm The Raiders are WAY over the cap next year. It will be interesting to see how they work their way down to where they deed to be. Not sure how it affects Rice, but I think he'll play one more year. |

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by StegRock on Jan 11th, 2003, 11:56am Oh, yea! KFFL reports that Jerry's a comin' back: Raiders | More On Rice - from KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com) January 10, 2003 13:42:24 PT Updating earlier stories, Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com a source close to Oakland Raiders WR Jerry Rice told ESPN.com this week that it is "pretty much a given" Rice will return in 2003 for a 19th season. Raiders | Rice Still has the Fire to Play - from KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com) January 10, 2003 6:50:58 PT Updating previous reports, the Sacramento Bee reports Oakland Raiders WR Jerry Rice continues to drop hints that he'll return for a 19th NFL season next year. Rice said the fire is still burning and he hasn't given any thought to the fact that this weekend's playoff game vs. the Jets could be his last game. I'm not ready to move on right now," Rice said. And, I just traded (Brian Griese) for him (straight-up) in the GBRFL on Thursday night, the night just before these reports came out. I got the hot hand like a jam master! [smiley=jammaster.gif] Intuition right on again like a zen master! [smiley=zenmaster.gif] |

I'm sticking with my guns for now. Looking at the numbers they face, which I have been doinga little bit, h the cutting the Raiders are going to have to do, I'm not so sure he survives. On that hunch alone, I see him retiring, rather than move yet again. The odds are much greater that Tim Brown is done. |

I agree. Make, don't make, win or lose the Super Bowl, Jerry Rice will play until released. Oakland is his last stop - IMO. But he will play until 45 years old, or Al pulls the plug. ~SW PS: Note to Jerry. Get off the corn rows and do-rag. Yea. I know. You're a Raider now. But Jeez Louise. You look ridiculous. |

Isn't that exactly what FourTwoOh is claiming could very well happen this year because of the Raiders salary-cap issues? Can you address this within the framework FourTwoOh presents or disprove or at least show contrary evidence to his claim? Quote:

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by Keyshawn Johnson 76yards on Jan 18th, 2003, 11:52pm I hope he sticks around for one more year. My reasons? 1)Next year, I'd like to take him in the 5th around, again. 2)See everyone laugh at me because Jerry Rice is to old to play. 3)Applaud myself for being so smart, and watch as Jerry Rice finishes in the Top 15 in WRs. Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by Bootlegger on Jan 19th, 2003, 9:10am In my humble opinion, I beleive Rice will retire if the raiders win the superbowl, I know that sounds cliche, but I do think that will wrap up his career nicely. |

I don't really agree with this assessment because a) I take KFFL as Gospel and b) I think the "Elway" dynamic, which has been so en vogue to refer to since he did it, works for QB's much more than for other positions. It is part of the "hero-goat" aspect of the position. We will always remember the quarterback of a Super Bowl team. Other positions... only if they stand out, and even then maybe not. Also, when Elway walked away, he did not just win the Super Bowl, they schooled the Falcons and he was the MVP of the game. If Jerry Rice were to have a MONSTER game in the process of their winning the Super Bowl and win the MVP, maybe, just maybe, he retires. But, what if he doesn't? Bootlegger, would Jerry Rice retire after a Super Bowl game in which he went for a measly 4 for 50 and 0 TD's or thereabouts? I definitely don't think so! [smiley=no.gif] Also, I am awaiting your response to the question I posted above, ScreamingWeasel! |

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by Razzak on Jan 19th, 2003, 8:32pm Elway had never won superbowls before those two years. Rice has tons of rings. The superbowl isn't what it's about now. It's about having fun and proving to everyone he's the best ever. Do you really think people can break these records unless the game changes dramatically toward the offense in future years? What are the odds of a player landing 2 HOF qb's in a row and then getting two QB's with record-setting years throwing to him. What are the odds a player can play until his 40's with a rebuilt knee? He's not human. |

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by StegRock on Jan 21st, 2003, 11:15pm Just read it at KFFL: Raiders | Rice Not Done Yet - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com) 18:36 PT: Greg Beacham reports for the AP that Oakland Raiders WR Jerry Rice's fourth Super Bowl appearance won't be his last game. "No, this is not my last game," said Rice on Tuesday. "I'm not looking that far down the road. I still enjoy it, and if my body continues to hold up, I'm going to keep playing." No commentary necessary! ;D |

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by Jetdoc on Jan 22nd, 2003, 9:42am As others have said, I don't think Rice really has a sayso in the matter. Look at Cris Carter this past year. He wanted to play...he REALLY did. The Vikings released him and he tested the FA market and got squat until the Dolphins were decimated by injuries. The Raiders are gonna have to cut a serious amount of cap room, and Rice and Brown have to be at the top of the list, especially with Porter waiting in the wings. I can see Tyrone Wheatley also becoming a cap casualty as well. I don't think Rice wants to leave the Bay Area, so unless the 49ers want him back, I think he's done. |

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by StegRock on Jan 23rd, 2003, 12:26am Here's what I gotta' say... There is NO WAY Jerry retires without an announced last lap and I don't think that Al Davis will want to miss out on all the hoopla that goes therewith, especially with a Super Bowl under their belts. They'll figure out the numbers! Actually, I don't think he is going anywhere soon. I am starting to think, if he is not going to retire this year, which I obviously do not think he will, he will probably be around for another two... or get this... three or four years. [smiley=ohshit.gif] I don't see why not! You say, "What does he have to play for?" How about putting those records WAY out of reach? Excellence AND longevity of "George Blanda-like" proportions. Now that's ALL-TIME greatness! |

Don't like that "RR" thing in there like that! Doesn't roll off the tongue! Can't change the "Rice" part, though! Gonna' have to change the (misnomer) "rotisserie" part, but not so as it becomes "JRFFL". That sounds narly (sp. ?), too. ??? Maybe, I could call it the "JRBL", the Jerry Rice Bumperball League, and get real surreal about it ("real surreal" is that an oxymoron?). ??? I'm confused! I don't know what the hell I am saying anymore! [smiley=gonecrazy.gif] I do know this, though, this whole discussion is moot for at least one more year! [smiley=yes.gif] |

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by StegRock on Jan 27th, 2003, 1:33pm Here's the latest out of the Associated Press: http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs02/s/2003/0126/1499379.html. Both Rice and Brown say they are definitely coming back. Based on the finances, I think Rice does, but Brown doesn't. I see the Raiders going with Jerry & Jerry as their starting duo at wideout next season. I think it could spell monster statistical seasons for both! ;D |

Title: Re: Who thinks Jerry Rice will retire this year? Post by StegRock on Jan 28th, 2003, 12:57pm Here's the latest from ESPN and via "the Gridiron Newsstand" regarding the Raiders salary-cap woes and their effect, or lack thereof, on Rice's return: http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs02/columnist/2003/0127/1499652.html http://www.bayarea.com/mld/bayarea/sports/football/nfl/oakland_raiders/5047390.htm http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/football/raiders/story/6009904p-6966371c.html Here is one defining quote regarding Rice from that last piece: "Rice's 2003 cap number is only $1.5 million, thanks to truckloads of deferred cash. (So,) Rice's return makes financial sense to the Raiders, since $1.5 million is a bargain for a future Hall of Famer who led the team in receptions this season." According to all these pieces, given Rice's low cap-number (and awesome play), any concerns heretofore of his not returning next year was a miscontruing of the salary-cap facts. |
