Title: Emmitt's future...
Post by StegRock on Jan 23rd, 2003, 1:56pm
Is this the official signifying of the end of the road for Emmitt in Dallas?  Check it out:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/2003/0123/1497534.html.

There is even speculation that "Snyderman" has his web aimed at Emmitt.  Wouldn't that be weird?  Davis to Dallas and Emmitt to Washington!  The Davis to Dallas part seems alright, but Emmitt to Washington... What the fuck for?  To screw up the development of your young upstarts!  I guess Steve will take care of that himself, anyway, though, right? ::) [smiley=no.gif]

Edited to tweak the Topic!

That's too bad. I'm not a big fan of the Cowboys or Emmitt, but the guy has given so much to that team and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's these types of things that remind us that sports is a business and I hate to see it. Emmitt thinks he can still play and Dallas thinks he's just a back-up. It's hard to say who's right or wrong, but it's sad to see.

It will be sad to see him go, but I would also hate to see him stay around untill he is labeled a has been.

Word is that he will stick around,  but as a backup....

Davis in Dallas would be excellent (mainly because I am a Davis dynasty owner).  He fits Parcells' brand of smash-mouth football where the RB gets 25-30 carries a game (e.g. Curtis Martin), which is exactly Davis's running style.

With the decent Cowboy offensive line and stout defense, I can see Davis producing 1,400 yards next year and double-digit touchdowns.  Am I just a tainted Davis owner?

If I remember correctly Dal. O-line is not that good.  Regardless Davis should be good for 1,000 and 10 td.s.  My 2 "sense". [smiley=biker.gif]

Last year, they were'nt very good, but that was primarily due to the fact that Larry Allen was out most of the year.  Flozell Adams and Larry Allen (if he returns healthy) are pretty good anchors to that line...I know that they've got some promising young rookies as well that really got beaten up last year (Andre Gurode, etc.).  The lack of any passing game really killed their ability to run the ball as well.  Hutchinson started to get it together towards the end of the year, so we'll see if that can take some pressure off of the line.

Davis would be decent in Dallas.  I would say that 1,400 and "double-digit" touchdowns, which can range from 10 on up, is a little much to expect.  I think that penciling him in for 1,200, with about a 150-yard window either way, and just 10, plus or minus 3, would be a much safer foundation from which to proceed.  Don't get sucked into what you're seeing through that kaleidoscope, Jet!  Overestimating can ONLY burn you!  The best case scenario, you guessed right and you break even!

As for Emmitt, though he says he's staying in Dallas, KFFL is now reporting that the Carolina Panthers have expressed interest in him.  YUCKY! :P

I was listening to The Dan Patrick Show on ESPN radio and they were talking about Emmitt's situation. They feel that Jones handled this situation poorly and disrespected Emmitt by going public with this information. They stated that Emmitt would not remain in Dallas as a back and hinted that he may play in Tampa Bay next season. Apparently he and his family live in Florida and he nearly played with them this year.

WOW!  Now that's quality info! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Me thinks that could be a VERY good situation for Emmitt [smiley=lickinmychops.gif] , providing Gruden ends the Alstott-Pittman experiment! [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] Enough already!

On SportsCenter today, Emmit said that he doesn't mind being a backup if he was given the opportunity to fight for a starting spot during training camp. When asked what he thought of Troy Hambrick being the starter. Emmit said, he's not ready.

Exactly, that's why the ESPN guys said, "The writing is on the wall".  An "unidentified source" (Jones) leaked to the media that Smith would be welcomed back to Dallas if he accepted a pay cut and didn't mind being the backup. They felt this statement was made to pave the road for what was about to happen. They said, and I agree, that this conversation should have been held in private and that Emmitt should at least be given the opportunity to compete for the starting job in training camp. If he doesn't get it then so be it... at least he had the chance. After all he's done for Dallas he deserves at least that much. They also mentioned that Parcells refuses to get involved with the situation until after Smith has worked it out with Dallas because he doesn't want to be known as the guy who kicked Emmitt out of Dallas.

Okay, here is the latest on Emmitt as per KFFL:

Cowboys | No Rush On Emmitt - from KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
January 25, 2003 7:35:58 PT The Star-Telegram reports Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Friday he has no timetable for a discussion with RB Emmitt Smith about the possibility of the NFL's all-time leading rusher's return to Dallas. Jones says the meeting will probably be in the "next two weeks," though he has not contacted Smith about an appointment. Jones also denied any statements that said Smith would be welcomed back to the team as a backup only. When asked if Smith could return as a starter next season, Jones declined to comment, saying, "I don't want to get into anything about directions."

Panthers | More On Smith - from KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
January 24, 2003 19:03:55 PT Updating an earlier story, Pat Yasinskas reports for the Charlotte Observer a source close to Dallas Cowboys RB Emmitt Smith said the Carolina Panthers are one of a handful of teams the running back would consider playing for if he leaves Dallas. The source also said Smith has recently purchased a home in the Carolinas. A series of events would have to occur to make Smith available, and it's no given the Panthers would be interested. GM Marty Hurney said there have been no discussions about Smith because he remains under contract.

Here is a link to that article in the Observer straight off "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/football/nfl/carolina_panthers/5019296.htm.

My take on it all...  Emmitt is done in Dallas.  But, where he goes can only be considered to have been pulled out of someone's ass [smiley=moon.gif] (no, not your ass, "someone") at this point!  The report out of Carolina is basically just hype.

Man, I know my opiion of what Emitt should do, doesn't mean squat to Emitt, but the thought of Emmitt on any other team is just plain wrong. More power to him and his desires. Selfishly feeling cheated if he doesn't finish a Cowboy.

I agree. I have suffered through many a game over the years where Emmitt destroyed the Giants run defense. I have the upmost respect for the man, even though he played for the enemy for all those years. I would never want to see Emmitt playing in any other uniform except the Cowboys.

Emmitt Smith needs to take a step back, reflect on all he's accomplished, take a deep breath, and RETIRE.

Anything else will be a blemish on a spectacular career.  Whether he is riding the pine behind a Troy Hambrick (or whoever is running the ball in Dallas) or starting for a weak Carolina offense, it's all going to be a sad statement for the all-time leading rusher in the NFL.

Can he still start in the league?  Probably.  Can he be the force he has been in the past?  Absolutely not.

Just hang 'em up Emmitt and retire while you still have the respect of everyone involved.

Philly, BW, FourTwoOh, here's my ultimate take!  I, too, really dislike the idea of seeing him in a different uniform.  I, more so, do not like to see a player outplay his usefulness and tarnish a great career by playing too long; this is an area of debate with Emmitt.  On a good team with an above-average line, I think he could still be pretty good.  Unfortunately, I think if he stays in Dallas, he will be overstaying his welcome, especially since, based on his comments on NFL Sunday Countdown, Bill Parcells is not crazy about the "old Emmitt", not to be confused with "the Emmitt of old."  That having been said, Dallas neither is a good team nor has an above-average line.  I think there is one good fit for Emmitt.  I have heard that Tampa may have interest in Emmitt, and on Super Bowl weekend Emmitt seemed to reciprocate.  If, and that is a big IF, Tampa gives up on the Michael Pittman experiment, not that I am sure that they should, Emmitt could be a fantastic fit, GREAT team and an o-line really coming into its own.  So, I would like to see Emmitt either retire or play in Tampa.  I think those are the only viable options.  Though I do not want to see him play for any other team, I think his staying in Dallas would be a huge disaster.

Not quite a done deal yet!  Here is the VERY, VERY LATEST fresh off "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/5209227.htm.

Emmitt has stated that he wants to make it to 20,000 yards rushing.  He is a good 2,800+ yards away.

What is your guys' take on all this?

I think that Emmitt could play the rest of his life and not make it to 20,000.  He needs to hang it up now. [smiley=dejected.gif]

Emmitt might not be a player to rebuild with, but he is awfully appealing to repeat with:

Please, Emmitt, please: Sign with the Bucs and tag-team with Michael "Who Needs a Regular Season?" Pittman for 12-15 carries a game each. To quiet the critics, improving "yards per carry" will do a lot more than upping "total yards," which ain't happening anywhere.

He doesn't need the money: What would be more of a finger in the face of critics than to flash his tail lights en route to another Super Bowl ring?

I think Arizona would be a  mistake for Emmitt.

Playing to win another ring is one thing, but playing to pad his already record breaking stats? If he signs with Arizona, that's exactly what it would be and I'd lose a lot of respect for him. This must be a negociating ploy... Meet with Arizona, get a lot of press and drive up his value for a team he really wants to play for. I just can't believe that a player of his stature would want to play for a team that just lost their 2 best players. I know they'll have some $$$ but does anyone really think Arizona is going anywhere in the next couple of years?

New England has FINALLY thrown their hat into the ring of looking at a RB. I read on the GRIDIRON Newstand that N.E. had talks with Emmitt's agent just as a feeler. Belichick said that he had no major interest in Emmitt, but would look at things.
