Seriously, after watching the guy coach first-hand for the last few years in the Pac-10, he's a winner. That's what the 9ers need. Just because the 9ers have done well doesn't mean it was Mooch's doing.

To compare their college careers:
Mooch: 6-6 with Cal?
Erickson: Success with 4 different schools

Erickson's only real criticism for not being a good coach was failing with the Seahawks. My response is: Who hasn't?

By the way, I'm excited about this signing. I really didn't know he was a canidate as he turned down SC a few years ago to stay at OSU (Thank god, Go Pete Caroll Go).

He'll do well with the 9ers and will be gone in 3-4 years tops. Can he take them to the superbowl? Probably not unless Rumpf steps it up and the secondary stays healthy, but at least he'll *try* to win games. Mooch was more about trying not to lose. There's a difference in my opinion.

Erickson while coaching the Seahawks through 95-98 went 31-33.

Mariucci in six years with the 49ers went 60-43.

Don't compare their college records, instead compare their NFL records, because that my friend, is the only thing that counts in the NFL.

My predicton on Erickson: 49ers fail to make playoffs in the 2003-2004 season, and he get's fired/resigns, in two years.

Razz, I know you love your 49ers, but don't let that eternal optimism for them that you always seem to exude cloud your judgement here. I know you may really like this move and could (end up) be(ing) right. But, you have to admit that this came out of nowhere/they pulled this one out of thin air, read hot air, read their asses [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif] , which, in and of that, makes this, in the least, a suspect move. I, for one, tend to agree with KJ 76. I think you have to consider Mooch's and Erickson's track record in the NFL more than what they did in the college ranks when comparing the two. What Mariucci did in college is not at all reflective of what he accomplished in the NFL; likewise, what Erickson did in the NFL is not at all indicative of what he is capable of in the college ranks. In any case, only time will tell, but as things stand right now, I think they could have made a better, more aggressive choice.

Statistics are meaningless without context.

If we follow your logic, we can compare Mariucchi and Erickson's records this season at the end of the year and obviously see who is the better coach.

As for Steg and my over-optimism. Erickson isn't the greatest coach ever. He's a good coach who deserved another shot in the NFL. He's tied on my list with a thousand other coaches that I thought could cut it (Caroll, Turner, Coughlin, Schottenheimer, Shoops -- all around the same level for me). Above that level you've got guys like Parcells, Gruden, Belichek (sure, hes a pompous ass but he did an amazing job with Baltimore this year) etc. The big name coaches.

Erickson was the best guy available. He's also a better coach than Mariucchi. I just don't like Denny Green and when Childress dropped out of the running I was resigned to Mora Jr.. However, Erickson was a very pleasant surprise. Thus, I'm pleased.

Don't act like I haven't been an Erickson fan until yesterday. I wanted that guy to coach SC after Hackett and was disappointed he turned us down. We got Caroll, which turned out to be fantastic. Yeah, he came out of the blue during that job hunt too.

The entire basis of the argument that Erickson sucks is on his tenure in Seattle.

Seattle - 0 rings
With Erickson - 0 rings
With Holmgren - 0 rings

49ers - 5 rings
With Mariucchi - 0 rings

If you want to just look at stats, these make it seem like they got a coach who is no worse and cheaper.

In both cases, the headliners, John Clayton and Peter King, support the 49ers decision. HOWEVER, I felt that one of the most revealing statements that would raise one's eyebrow out of skepticism to the hiring of Erickson came from the Clayton piece. He wrote:

"Unlike a lot of coaches, Erickson doesn't demand to be in charge of personnel even though he has a good eye for talent. From that standpoint, he's a good fit with Donahue, whose job it is to get him the talent.

...

'Dennis' biggest strength is his offensive scheme,' Mueller said. 'His offenses were among the top 10 in most years...'

Erickson's main offense is a three-receiver spread system, but he isn't going to take the 49ers out of their patented West Coast offense. For that reason, Erickson is keeping Greg Knapp as the offensive coordinator and play-caller. Ted Tollner is sticking around to work with the quarterbacks. Erickson's main job will be coordinating the coaching staff and watching tape to self-scout and improve."

Tell me that first statement regarding his being a good fit with Donahue isn't some SERIOUS double-speak. ??? What the fuck does he mean? Even in context of the article it doesn't make sense. Then, he is a great offensive mind, BUT that don't matter, either. His job is to "coordinate" and "watch tape to 'self-scout' (whatever that really means) and improve". I don't know... sounds like "marionette" material to me... at least not very "aggressive," which is all that I really concluded, Razz. I suppose, even if he is just a puppet as I suggest, that may be exactly what the 49ers in fact need, anyway, for all I know.
