Title: Orlando Brown, RT, Remember Him?
Post by Keyshawn Johnson 76yards on Feb 15th, 2003, 10:13am
Well, apparently Orlando Brown, considered to be one of the best tackles at the time, is looking to make a comeback and will be one of the many free agents available.

Remember him? The guy who got hit in the eye with a penalty flag and sued the NFL? Well apparently, he has been keeping in shape and is looking to make a return.

If he is as healthy as he says he is(though they all say that), I seriously hope Tampa makes a stab at this guy, the o-line needs it.

Perhaps he has been inspired by the play of OT Jermane Newberry of the Philadelphia Eagles who cannot see out of one eye.  Guy's a real gladiator!

That was one of the craziest things I've ever seen on a football field. Remember how bad his eye looked and how he nearly killed the Ref? That was good stuff. 10 yards?? How about the loss of YOUR CAREER! Talk about a major penalty! I hope he makes it, that guy got screwed.

What I'd like to know is if the Ref got fired or got penalized in some way...

Does anyone know if he lost complete vision in that eye?  Just this last week a friend of mine asked me if I knew what had ever happened to this guy?  Until now, I honestly didn't know. ;)

t has been suggested by some legal experts that Brown might have to sign some sort of injury waiver before a team would sign him. Certainly he would have to demonstrate to interested teams that his eyesight is sufficient to allow him to return and that he is also capable of knocking off three years of rust.

It appears that he isn't totally blind, just has lost a bit of vision, but, like Steg stated, Mayberry of the Eagles is doing just fine with one eye. In fact Mayberry is among the tops in blocking.

Well, at least one of Brown's former teams may be interested in bringing him in.  Here is the relevant excerpt from a piece in the Baltimore Sun brought directly to you by "the Gridiron Newsstand":

"The Ravens may bring back Williams, who played for the New Orleans Saints last year but may be released in a salary cap move, or former tackle Orlando Brown, who reportedly reached a settlement in his lawsuit against the league, to add depth to the offensive line.

Brown played with the Ravens from 1996 to 1998 before signing with the Cleveland Browns. He has not played since December 1999, when he was struck in the eye by a weighted penalty flag."

Here is link to the whole piece, which is not about Brown, though, but about CB Chris McAlister:

If memory serves me correctly (and it usually doesn't)... the referee who beaned him with the flag was Jeff Triplette and I think he is still officiating.

Fanball.com claims that the St. Paul Pioneer Press has reported that the Vikings are "eyeing Brown." [smiley=LMFAO.gif] I cannot find substaniation of this via "the Gridiron Newsstand", though. They also claim that the Redskins, Ravens (which has already been reported herein), Eagles and Patriots are also sniffing around Brown.  The Eagles must really be sold on one-eyed offensive linemen. ;)

Looks like he spurned triple the dough the Vikes were offering to be closer to his kids in Baltimore...
