Well, here is the short of it as per the Detroit Free Press gotten off of "the Gridiron Newsstand":

"They apparently will not pay Germane Crowell the $2 million needed to exercise their option for next season, but they might attempt to sign him to a lesser contract. The Lions have concerns about the knee injuries that have reduced Crowell's speed and ability to get open."

Crowell is certainly not dealing from a position of strength. Can't blame Detroit for not wanting to pay that much with his return to form still wide open. Assuming they make him a decent offer, I'd like to see him stay put.

Well, it has been confirmed. Crowell, along with Desmond Howard, has been cut. They are claiming that they have an interest in re-signing him, which I think is a little surprising. Here is the lowdown obtained via "the Gridiron Newsstand":

As the topic now reads, UFA RB Shawn Bryson was signed to a contract and RFA LB Na'il Diggs of the Packers was signed to an offer sheet. Here it is from ESPN and "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Well, now Bryson is off the market and, thus, unavailable to the Chiefs, Cowboys, Patriots and whoever else might have been interested. I think he will really push James Stewart for the starting job and if Stewart gets injured, that may be it for him. That having been said, I do NOT think Bryson is a good fit in the West Coast Offense. I did not think Stewart was either, though, and he has actually been pretty good... when not injured, of course. What do you guys think?

Also, any takes on the Diggs signing?

Thsi is a good move for DET. They don't have any RBs there anyway. It just gives them more depth. Bryson should do fine there and could start if his is fine??????????
I still see them taking a RB in the draft in rnds 3-5 somewhere.

The Lions are talking with UFA RB Olandis Gary. They already have James Stewart and, now, Shawn Bryson in the fold, but I guess they feel they can never have too much of a good thing.

Well, this first caught my eye on "The REAL Feed"... Any thoughts on the Lions' recent signings, especially that of LB Earl Holmes? Is he just a guy past his prime? How much juice does he have left? Not a bad signing at all...it gives Detroit another seasoned veteran to teach Charles Rogers and gives Harrington a veteran target. won't do anything fantasy wise, but football wise, I like it.

Maybe it's just me ..... [smiley=doh.gif] but I think Harrington will put up decent numbers. He has some fairly decent wideouts, and they will be playing from behind a lot. He could turn out to be a very serviceable [smiley=gettinridden.gif] #2 QB!

WOW, I didn't know about Pinner and Staley. I really don't think Bryson is a good fit there. Might Detroit now make a harder push for that other Staley dude in Philadelphia? It wouldn't be the first time I'd heard it! It's been reported right here on these very boards! [smiley=awwgee.gif] He surely fits the system a hell of a lot better! [smiley=yes.gif]

Reno Mahe did look good tonight, but Westbrook still isn't playing and the Eagles would have to be wowed with an offer for Staley. I'd be happy with Charles Rogers for Duce Staley... sounds fair.

This is one of those situations we need to watch very carefully. I don't think Staley is an option.

HOWEVER, Betts and Watson from Washington are!!! The Skins have too many running backs. Watson would be a good fit. Betts would be even better.

I agree with this! I just immediately thought Duce in knee-jerk fashion, but Betts and even moreover Watson would be excellent fits and are apparently very available. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] But, I still think Duce is a possibility.

And Autry Denson has been cut to make room. Surprising, as I thought he'd earned a spot with his strong preseason performances. I took him in the second to last round of my draft this year (right before my kicker) hoping he'd supplant Cobourne/Bryson, but oh well.

Gary.. Bryson.. Cobourne.. hmm... my money's on Cobourne.

You are correct, sir... in that Cobourne IS the best of the bunch. My opinion also. However, Mooch would not start an undrafted rookie free agent in the season opener, reason why Gary was brought along. Make no mistake, he could have gone Bryson also... but Gary is light years ahead of Bryson IMO. But before Stewart comes back, look for Cobourne to make a point and continue to take carries from Stewart even when he's back, possibly taking over the job full-time.

James Stewart was put on IR. OUT FOR THE SEASON. I guess they knew what they were doing when they got Gary.

I don't see Cobourne taking any carries anytime soon. I think Bryson would get a crack at the starting position before Cobourne.

Cobourne will surprise, guys. Don't underestimate the kid. From the very beginning, I heard he was looking better than Pinner, while BOTH him and Pinner were ahead of Bryson. So as for Bryson getting a shot first, I doubt it. Cobourne was #6 in rushing yards in NCAA last year, one behind McGahee. He's no slouch.
