Title: McCaffrey a Denver Cap Victim??
Post by DirkDiggler on Feb 24th, 2003, 9:47am
The article listed below states that Denver needs to cut $20 million in salary.  McCaffrey may be their toughest cut.  McCaffrey says he is willing to renegotiate, but with that type of cap problem, and Lelie waiting in the wings, and with McCaffrey being 34 years old, I think he his done in Denver.

The official stance is Denver wants him to stay in Denver.

If you're a Bronco fan, you're a HUGE fan of Easy Ed's and even if you're not, you respect him. He's like Erstad to the Angels... their heart and soul and you just can't cut guys like that. I'll be shocked if they don't work out a deal.

Here is the latest from CNN/SI:

And, more of the local lowdown brought to you by way of "the Gridiron Newsstand":

I, for one, being a Broncomaniac like Walker_Boh, hope he manages to come back, BUT a) not at the expense of their being able to sign Jake Plummer and b) only for one more season as I think it will then be time to turn the reigns on over to Lelie, so he can develop for a year or two as the Broncos #2 and then be able to take over the #1 spot with confidence when Smith has to move on.

Great news! The Broncos have reworked the contracts of Davis and McCaffrey and both will return next season. It also sounds as if the Broncos have something big in store for us... could it be Jake the Snake?

Just curious, but why is the return of Davis "great news"?  Are you Bronco fans forgetting the great year Portis had?  Davis is silly if he tries to come back once again.

Just my 2c.   [smiley=money.gif] [smiley=money.gif]

What ever happened to loyalty and respect?  ??? Oh wait, I forgot, you're a Philly fan... ;) Davis is a HUGE reason why the Broncos won those championships and I would have been very disappointed if he were cut. If Davis feels he can comeback, I think he's earened the right to try and do so. Chances are he won't be the starter, but I think the Broncos showed a lot of class in keeping him around.

I don't deny that it was a nice thing that the Broncos did in re-signing Davis... but the guy has got to realize that he's tried to come back from injuries how many times now?  I feel that the Broncos could bring him on as an assistant coach or some such thing if they want to keep him around the organization... but lets not forget that every penny they allot to Davis is a penny that they are not going to have to sign other free-agents.  Last I looked, the Denver defense had some holes it needed to fill, not to mention the QB position.  But if the Broncos are more concerned about their team history than future performance, then so be it...

The only problem I have with the re-signing of Terrell Davis is how will this affect the value of Clinton Portis in the future?
