Title: Bills Offseason Report
Post by StegRock on Mar 7th, 2003, 6:29pm
Well, after clearing out a ton of room by trading WR Peerless Price, it looks like the Bills are ready to improve their defense by doing their best to acquire Cincinnati LB Takeo Spikes.  Here is the latest out of ESPN and off of "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1519970.html;

Any thoughts, fellas?

Edited to change the Topic!

My thoughts are:

"Why the HELL didn't the Eagles sign him?"

Plus, the Bengals signed Kevin Hardy today, adding further speculation that they won't be matching the Bill's offer sheet...

Too cool for the Bengals...  Spikes will not get to play under defensive genius Marvin Lewis in Cincy; instead, he follows his old coach, Dick LeBeau, to Buffalo.  Here is the confirmation straight off "the Gridiron Newsstand":

I like what Marvin is doing so far. He has signed four new defensive players so far. Sure, losing a player the caliber of Spikes hurts, but how good could he have been for the Bengals if his heart wasn't in it? I am sure he'll play up to his ability in Buffalo.

Lewis is bringing in guys that want to be a part of a building project. James, Thorton and Hardy wil bring a bit of stability to the defense, along with Simmons and Smith. Not sure what they are really going to do with that number one pick. It is looking more and more like they will take Palmer and build the defense with more free agents and later draft picks, which is starting to look like the right choice...

Great signing for Bills fans. :D
Maybe the Pats can sign a quality Free-Agent or two. :'(

This is a link to another "Bills Offseason Report" thread that was created and that will be locked.  It announces the signing of DT Sam Adams.  Here is a link to it:

Continue discussion here!  Thanks! [smiley=bow.gif]

Hmmm...now that the Bills have some beef in the middle with Adams, plus Spikes, maybe Fletcher will have a big year tackle wise...I may have to rethink my defensive keepers!!!

Boy, using "The Real Feed" in conjunction with the newspaper links on "the Gridiron Newsstand" works like a charm. [smiley=smitten.gif] First seen in "The Real Feed" and then corroborated with a piece from "the Gridiron Newsstand", FB Sam Gash is back with his old buddies in Buffalo.  For the latest, hit up "The Real Feed" for the headline and then the following piece for the lowdown:

http://www.buffalobills.com/news/index.cfm?cont_id=173154&dsp=press.

"The Real Feed" and "the Gridiron Newsstand" go together like two peas in a pod.  I guess I am so excited as this is the first time I am using "The Real Feed", instead of another "hot wire" source, with "the Gridiron Newsstand" together like this.  It is nice to just STAY AT HOME!

By the way, on a fantasy football note, I think Gash could really give a boost to RB Travis Henry's numbers.  He is still a solid blocker. [smiley=yes.gif]

Title: Re: Bills Offseason Report:  Team "Lands Gary"!
Post by StegRock on Apr 22nd, 2003, 2:37pm
Well, it's the news topping "The REAL Feed" right now...  RB Olandis Gary departs Denver and lands in Buffalo.  Here is all the meat from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.syracuse.com/nfl/spnet.ssf?/default.asp?c=advance&page=nfl/news/ABN2555688.htm;

http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20030422/1011330.asp.

The second piece is the meatier of the two.

So, any thoughts?  Is this just a ho-hum signing of a backup running back?  Probably, but it is another good move by the Bills in what is amounting to a great offseason for them! [smiley=yes.gif]

Could someone please explain the rationale behind drafting McGahee ??? They have stud locked up for a while, just signed a competent back-up and spend a first round pick on a RB! I could see the pick making more sense if they didn't just sign Gary!! Any thoughts? Help me understand! [smiley=gonecrazy.gif]

I am not sure exactly what they were thinking.  Maybe they want two stud RBs?  Maybe they will trade one of them?  (Not as if that makes sense either).

Who knows.  I would be scared to own Henry and I would be scared to own McGahee on my fantasy team.

Is S Chad Cota's retiring, the news currently atop "The REAL Feed", important news or just as insignificant as their signing of WR James Jett last week? [smiley=whatever.gif]

McGahee SIGNS!!!  Fantasy impact....none to little this year.  Next year?  Gonna be interesting!  5 year deal.

Off the Real Feed.......

http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/BUF/6561634

The contract includes a guaranteed two-tiered bonus, the second part of which will be paid at the end of the season. The deal is also heavily laden with incentives that more than double a base contract, including bonuses.

The question now is when the Miami running back will be able to play as he's still recovering after tearing three ligaments in his left knee during the school's loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl last January.

As part of the agreement, the Bills hold the option to keep McGahee for a fifth season.

Now this is a deal that makes sense, unlike Larry Johnsons' deal with KC. Incentive laden and basically 4 yrs with an option for the 5th. This gives Willis one full year to recover, plus Henry is signed through 2006. This will allow them both to fight it out next year and decide in 2005 which way to go. Willis, or trade Henry while they can still get great value from him.
