Title: Put some sleepers on the table Post by dropkick on Mar 8th, 2003, 11:28pm For starters, lets define sleeper [smiley=gettinhammered.gif]... To me its a guy off most everyones radar who can be had in the latter rounds of the draft. It is not a "value pick", defined as "I got this guy in the 5th round and he'll perform like a 3rd rounder." And, a sleeper is NOT a high profile rookie ala Charles Rogers or Carson Palmer. Along those lines.. QB Jake Delhomme - I like what he did in his brief appearance as starter (circa 2000, something like 2 TDS and some rushing numbers in a late season gig) Josh McCown (sp?) haven't seem him play but I've heard good things and he should go into the season as the starter. Any arena league guys coming in? (don't laugh.. the style of game teaches quick decsion making) RB sleepers here few and far between... Some post injury guys out there.. Womack (NE) Buckhalter (Ph), Watson or Betts... thinking Canidate will get all the attention in Washington. Is Keaton still Deuce's backup in N'leans? He put up numbers (albeit in preseason) behind Dillon. WR Boerighter in KC has potential, especially if Holmes is less than 100%. Colt Reggie Wayne is in a nice offense and in some leagues might qualify as a sleeper but he shoud be the clear #2 come fall. |

Title: Re: Put some sleepers on the table Post by bgsgfan on Mar 9th, 2003, 4:54am Watch out for Verron Haynes in Pittsburgh. With the Bus seemingly on his last wheels it looks like Amos Zereoue is the heir-apparant, however I am not convinced. During the entire Bill Cowher era, there have been 2 decent smallish RBs - Zereoue and Ericc Pegram. Neither was a full time back and basically split time with the typical bruiser back. If this trend continues look for Haynes to gradually be placed in this role. Why? 1. The Bus is his way out. 2. Fu gets injured way too often and is on the downside of his career. 3. Haynes has showed some real talent in extremely limited action carrying the ball (last few games as a senior at Georgia and during preseason last year). As someone who has watched every snap the Steelers took all preseason, regular season, and postseason - I just see something in Haynes that has me believing he will continue in the line of Barry Foster, Bam Morris, and Jerome Bettis. The obvious counterpoint is that the Steelers offense has changed and Amos fits the new one well. This is true, but the bruiser back will always be an entrenched aspect of Cowher-ball and Haynes is the next star. p.s. Don't go off the deep end - late round sleeper in deep leagues is what I project - the type of guy to get instead of a second (worthless) TE. |

Title: Re: Put some sleepers on the table Post by dropkick on Mar 9th, 2003, 9:46am Off the deep-end? On the contrary, this is exactly my definition of sleeper. I know what you mean though... the behavior of peope on many boards is amazingly poor. I don't see the sense in asking people for their opinions and then shooting them down. I had forgot about Pegram. I stole a championship in 1995 with a team I inherited 3 weeks into the season and rebuilt with free agents. I had 3 Steelers in the mix, Pegram, Thigpen and Norm Johnson. I have Zeroue in a keeper league and hope the Bus doesn't come back at all next year. Haynes was off my radar but I see he has good size - 5'10 223 and decent numbers in limited action, 10 carries and 3 receptions. Over 5 yards/carry and apparently he can catch the ball. He would be a nice late round pick to hedge Zeroue. From Sporting News last December: Haynes was placed on injured reserve after doctors discovered he played on a broken fibula last Sunday. Haynes, a fifth-round pick in April, was the backup fullback to Dan Kreider, but he also had been getting some work as the No. 3 halfback because the team liked his running ability. The loss of Haynes hurts his personal development more than the team. Haynes will be better served as a halfback in the Steelers' offense because he has a nice blend of speed and power. Plus, he has quick feet, which allows him to accelerate through the hole. (Gerry Dulac/TSN) |

Title: Re: Put some sleepers on the table Post by dropkick on Mar 9th, 2003, 9:53am I recently saw an article in SI about Rashaan Salaam and a comeback. According to the article, he was excelling at an off-season camp (Cris Carter's???). |

Title: Re: Put some sleepers on the table Post by Keyshawn Johnson 76yards on Mar 9th, 2003, 10:57am Haha yes, about Rashaan Salaam, both he AND Ki-Jana Carter are working out together to make a come back into the NFL. As for sleepers, I'd list WR Robert Ferguson of the Packers and and RB Ladell Betts of the Redskins. To early to say for sure though... I mean, we haven't even started Training Camps yet. :P |
