Title: New York Giants off season report
Post by BarnabyWilde on Mar 9th, 2003, 1:15pm
Normally, the Giants sit pretty dormant during the off season. But this year, they have been pretty active so far, with more to come.

The most important thing the Giants had to do was re-sign left tackle Luke Petigout. Done. Next, was to re-sign Ike Hilliard. Done. Next step, upgrade their horrid special teams. So they go and sign kick return specialist Brian Mitchell from the Eagles, punter Jeff Feagles from the Seahawks, and long snapper Ryan Kuehl from the Browns. Done.

They got rid of a few players as well. They cut Jason Sehorn, Matt Allen, and Herman Moore. TE Dan Campbell signed with the Cowboys, and OG Jason Whittle signed with Tampa Bay. They need to resign OL Mike Rosenthal too, so they are not looking at filling two holes in the offensive line that played so well together last year.

As for signing any more free agents, the Giants look to find a replacement for Whittle and maybe a few more defensive linemen. According to their plans, they won't be signing anymore big money free agents like Hugh Douglas, Roosevelt Colvin, or Mike Peterson. They also plan on drafting a defensive lineman in the first round of this year's draft.

Below is a link to an article found on the Gridiron Newstand...

Nice find on the article there, BW! ;)

As per the article...  Funny how well Fassel and Hilliard are/seem to be getting along nowadays, especially vis-a-vis the words they were "exchanging" [smiley=arguing.gif] this time last year.  I guess [smiley=ontheclock.gif] has a way of healing everything.

The Giants signed 2 more smaller fish to fill a few holes. FB Jim Finn of the Colts and CB Ray Green of the Dolphins.

Hey Bouve, any intell on this guy? Looks like a role player/reserve type guy.

The G-Men are also close to resigning FS Omar Stoutmire too...

If I recall correctly, Jim Finn was the last player selected in the draft a few years back and has actually turned into a decent player.

Yeah Green was basically a role player but he was decent on special teams and saw a little game action in dime and nickle on a few occassions. Don't expect much from him unless he gets a chance to earn a starting job in which case he may be a welcome addition.

Thanks Bouve. I think the Giants will give him a shot to win the nickel spot opened up by the release of Sehorn.

Here is ALL the NEWS regarding the latest stir about Ron Dayne:  his absence from offseason team workouts, his wanting to be traded and the Giants' bringing Dorsey Levens in for a look-see:

As I have stated many times before, I would really like Ron to get a chance elsewhere.  The Giants offense is so tailored to Barber, that Dayne does not even fit it at all anymore.  One of the pieces above points out that Dayne's fate might have been sealed when he was in on a play that Barber was supposed to have been in on during their playoff game against the 49ers.  It was a pass play to the tailback and the results were disastrous.  Dayne needs a fresh start and Levens stylistically would make a better backup to Barber as I see it.  I say part ways with Dayne, which would be the best for everybody involved, and bring in Dorsey.  What do you all think?

I'd like to see the Giants sign Levens and trade Dayne, maybe for a mid round pick. I think signing Jones is critical. He is worth more than a 6th round pick IMO.

Getting a few O-Linemen to replace Whittle and the possible departing Rosenthal is also very important.

Greener pastures or longer buffet lines?   [smiley=hellyeafunny.gif]

Anyway, from one who saw Dorsey play last year, he's still got some gas left in the tank.  I thought he made the most of his limited opportunities last year and would be an ideal #2 to Tiki...

That being said, I hope it doesn't happen - for the Eagles sake.

Well, two fifths of last year's offensive line that played so well have  left. Looks like retooling time, just like last year. At least Pettigout, Bober and Seubert are still there. Now we need to replace the whole right side. Hope they can gel like last year!

Minor Giants signing, they added depth to their defensive line by adding DE Keith Washington...still no word on Dayne and the trade rumors yet, hopefully they'll move him soon.

Title: Re: New York Giants off season report
Post by BarnabyWilde on Apr 1st, 2003, 6:12pm
I was hoping Mack would go to the Texans and compete for the starting job. Having Mack in New York will cut into Tiki's goal line chances, hurting his fantasy stock. Plus, the Giants don't have that much money left to spend, unless a few more vets restructure. They still need some cash for the rookies coming in.

As a Giants fan, I'd rather see them sign a cheaper alternative, say, Dorsey Levens and then trade Dayne and let him compete for a job. I still say he can be effective if he gets 20-25 carries a game. If the Giants can get a mid round pick for him, then by all means, ship him out...

Right off... my TV set, New York's Eyewitness News, the New York local affiliate newscast for ABC, just reported that the Giants just signed RB Dorsey Levens and that Ron Dayne could be on the way out!  This, right from my TV set to your computer screen.  WOW! [smiley=ohshit.gif]

Now, guys, be on the lookout for confirmation from the newspaper links on "the Gridiron Newsstand"!

BW, we were doin' the same thing at the same time there and this time you beat me to the punch! >:( ;)

I will include this gem, the first non-AP report that has come out of "the Gridiron Newsstand", though, for those willing to sign up at the New York Times web site:

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/04/05/sports/football/05giants.html.

It is worth signing up for.  As stated, it is the first report that has come out besides the one from the Associated Press.  It discusses in more detail what they saw in and like about Levens and the likelihood of Dayne's departure due to the Levens signing.  It is a good read!

Well, first sighted on "The REAL Feed", then corroborated on "the Gridiron Newsstand"...  Doesn't look like Dayne is going anywhere too soon:

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/giants/wire/sns-ap-fbn-giants-dayne,0,2327556.story?coll=sns%2Dap%2Dgiants%2Dheadlines.

However, as noted in the article, during the draft might be a good time to move him!  Any thoughts?

Title: Re: New York Giants off season report
Post by DirkDiggler on Apr 16th, 2003, 7:46pm
I REALLY think the Giants are going to hold on to him.  He does not cost that much vs. releasing him, and he does add a nice dimension to that running game.   Why not have 3 backs in the fold?  4 if you count Brian Mitchell.

IF he does go anywhere, I see Carolina, Minnesota, or Detroit going for him.  They all need a little RB depth based on injuries or just lack of players.  However, I see Detroit and Carolina taking a RB in the mid rounds.

Title: Re: New York Giants off season report
Post by BarnabyWilde on Apr 28th, 2003, 6:40pm
Well, after watcing almost the entire draft this weekend, I sat back and reflected on how the Giants fared. Here is my take:

Round 1: William Joseph, DT, Miami: Don't know why he slipped so far, but I am not complaining. Will make an impact right away, rotating in with Hamilton and Griffin on the inside.

Round 2: Osi Umenyiora, DE, Troy St.: Who? Never heard of the guy until after the Giants drafted him. The front office is real high on him, saying he is a raw speed rusher with great potential. They must see something there. I think it was a reach, but we will see.

Round 3: Vishante Shiancoe, TE, Morgan St.: Another reach here, but the Giants think he could be a  compliment Shockey. Not a big need for the Giants, but with the loss of Campbell...I dunno.

Round 4: Rod Babers, DB, Texas: FInally a pick that made sense after the last two. This guy is a playmaker who may come in to camp and with the nickle spot. Is a little small, but has a great eye for making the big play.

Round 5: David Diehl, OG, Illinois: Will add depth to the line as a backup. Has good skills and may start someday.

Round 6 and 7: The Giants did well in the later rounds, picking up a few receivers, David Tyree from Syracuse, Willie Ponders of SE Missouri St,  and Kevin Walter from Eastern Michigan, DBs Frank Walker of Tuskegee and Charles Drake of Michigan, and Center Wayne Lucier of Colorado. All fo these players the Giants were targeting, according to GM Ernie Accorsi, and they got all of them, so they think they hada great draft. Don't know if they were the only ones targeting these guys, but, we shall see...  ;)

I was shaking my head after rounds 2 and 3, but the Giants say they know who they wanted and got their guys, so much in fact they aren't bringing in many undrafted free agents to camp this year.

I rate the draft a low B-/C+. Joseph and Babers are solid, but the book is stillo ut on Umenyiora and Sciancoe.

I think Heap is actually going to be the best FF TE this year.  Baltimore used heap in some really inovative ways last year, and the Giants are becoming overhyped (IMHO).  If Shockey quits dropping passes and sees the end zone more, you could be right.

Post by DOLFAN on Jul 20th, 2003, 7:34pm
Shockey is a great player no doubt. Too bad he really didn't start coming on until Hilliard got hurt.
Let get one thing clear though. TONY G is the best TE in the league, hell prolly in the history of the game, he can run, block, break tackles and out run/run over LBs at will. That being said we are talking about FF here.
FF wise i see Tony G's stats countinue to fall and his TDs be taken by Boerigter.
Shockey will be a very good player too. I just would like to see 3-4 VERY good season before you say that he is better than Tony G.

Title: Re: New York Giants off season report
Post by Bob_Oswego on Jul 21st, 2003, 10:40pm
I don't think Shockey is better than Tony G, I just think he is one player that will avoid the sophomore slump and he will find the endzone more than the 2 he got last season.  Let's face it he was hurt with that turf toe thing and he gutted it out...and Collins is an accurate passer so with Toomer, Hilliard, and Barber as a supporting cast Shockey should have plenty of open looks.....hence he is ready to break it open [smiley=builder.gif]

OK, one preseason game in the books.

Was it just me or did Tiki Barber look s..l..o..w last night.  His cuts weren't as quick and crisp as I'm used to and he was run down from behind by DE and LB on a few occasions.  I realize it's just the first preseason game, but this is something I'd watch if I was a Giant fan or a Tiki owner.  (Fortunately, I'm neither! Well I am back with a report

Giants O line was well exposed as a trouble spot, they even had trouble moving the sled at practice!

Ron Dayne RB and Jim Finn FB are working very hard and Tim Carter is fast with good hands.  Palmer looks more confident and their is a great group of young LB's Mallard, Mounk, Dhani Jones and of course Barrow.  Shaun Williams and Will allen lead the secondary and both Bryant and Hollis are 80% plus kickers

I really liked the tempo of practice and the mannerisms of the coaches

As for the stars Collins, Toomer, Barber, Strahan they go about their business real professional like and have a quiet confidence that says I know what I have to do and I will be ready

Shockey and Hilliard are the two with fire in their eyes every play as well as Bober C, Washington DL and Mitchell KR/RB these guys all seeed over determined and too serious if there is such a thing, maybe it is all the high expectations and each one has individual things to prove

Tam Hopkins, Ryan Clark, Stackhouse and Daryl Jones all seemed out of place the day I watched and also Babers

Hard to judge Joseph yet
Feagles P is a god send

Whew, that's it from Albany

TE Jeremy Shockey will miss the Giants' final two preseason games with a broken rib.  They say he will be back for their game Week 1, but, hey, come on, that pain ain't goin' away in three weeks.  It will be interesting to see if the injury hampers his production, at least during the first few weeks of the season.  Anyway, here's the AP article about it off "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Injuries ae mounting as the G-Men head out on a team bonding fishing trip to Lake George.  Strahan, Shockey, Shaun Williams and now long snapper Ryan Kuehl, he of free agent signing land has tendonitis in his elbow from over work ( he is snapping for two punters and two kickers) at camp, young LB Nick Griesson will handle the duties as well as C Chris Bober vs the Jets Friday night.  Additionall, a DL has a sore knee (I think it is Griffins) too late to go back and re read, check it out at Giants team site.  To make matters worse the Giants are fighting one another at camp, feisty is good but four fights in one practice is ridiculous.

Hope the fishing soothes some souls!!!
