Title: Jets Offseason Report
Post by DirkDiggler on Mar 9th, 2003, 10:34pm
Hot off of the GridIron Newsstand:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A2413-2003Mar9.html

The Redskins are going to offer Coles a contract.  It fits their needs for a WR.  Can't move up to get Rogers, so they will give away their first round pick to the Jets.

Will the Jets try to match or be happy just to have the Redskins 13th pick?  The Skins are offering a signing bonus of $13 million and offering a contract of $5 mil a year.  Unbelievable!!!  The Redskins seem to be bidding against themselves this offseason.  They have structured the deal so the Jets will have a hard time matching it.

The fantasy ramifications are huge.  Coles and Gardner on the same team...who will emerge as #1?  Santana Moss is now the #1?  Does Curtis Martin's value go up or down?  Ramsey will be coveted!

And the final thought.  Will the Redskins change their names to the Washington Jets?  4 Jets will have been signed by the Skins this offseason.  Hall, Thomas, Morton, and Coles.  Talk about envy.

The question to ask yourself regarding the Jets, who takes the reigns at the #1 recieiver slot? Wayne Chrebet is to old to be a #1, and is a possession reciever. Santana Moss an Antwaan Randle-El, whom can break free if they get into open field, but won't thrive with staggering numbers at the #1 or #2 reciever slot.

And who would be their #3?

Title: Re: Redskins sign Coles to offer sheet!!!
Post by DirkDiggler on Mar 11th, 2003, 4:33pm
The Jets are going to have to draft a WR.  They still have some free agent options out there as well.  Conway would be a solid fit!!  Another good fit would be Dyson.

The other question is what is Pennington going to do without his goto guy?  It is a good thing he is an accurate thrower because his receivers are gonna be covered all the time.

They'd have to either draft one with with one of their first two first rounders, OR...

package them and move up to take Charles Rogers, or at least trade one of the number ones and maybe another pick to get Andre Johnson.

The New York Jets will pursue restricted free agent Darrell Jackson if they lose Coles.  They would have to give up a first round pick for him.(their own) This move makes sense.  Lose Coles, move up from their pick to the Redskins pick, and get Darrell Jackson.  I do not see that big a drop from Coles to Jackson.   Of course, will the SeaHawks match once the the Jets offer??

This is a great, fun read.  Points out that while Snyderman is being lauded for jumping on "quality" free-agents this offseason, he may not actually be making the Redskins any better:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/don_banks/news/2003/03/11/banks_insider/.

Turns a lot of conventional perceptions on their heads.

Title: Re: Redskins/Jets and who will Receive?

Well, the Skins ain't gettin' Morton, who, as per the piece above, was actually the best of all the Redskins potential acquisitions.  The Jets matched!  Here is how the story goes as ripped right off "the Gridiron Newsstand" (with no double-dips on the AP report):

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/wire/sns-ap-fbn-jets-morton,0,2456336.story?coll=sns%2Dap%2Djets%2Dheadlines;

Oh, and ESPN chimed in too:

Post by StegRock on Mar 13th, 2003, 10:36pm
Well, it ain't a done deal yet.  Get a load of what ESPN's John Clayton is NOW reporting:

"Morton's contract with Jets under fire...  The Chad Morton story isn't over even though the Jets matched the Redskins' offer sheet.  The NFL Players Association has requested an expedited hearing to resolve a dispute in the five-year contract signed by Morton. The Jets didn't match a portion of the contract that voided the fourth and fifth years of the deal. Morton signed the contract with the understanding that it would be a five-year deal that would void to three seasons.

'Chad might be the most fought-over special teams player in history,' said his agent, Leigh Steinberg. 'There is going to be a hearing within 10 days with an arbiter because the Jets failed to match the void in his contract. They claim that they didn't match the void because, in their opinion, it wasn't a principle term of the contract. If we prevail, he would go back to the Redskins.'

Steinberg said he contacted the NFLPA once the contract was returned Thursday and didn't include the sections of the contract that had the voids."

Oh, brother!

Well, reports coming out ESPN now are that the Jets are letting Darrell Jackson fly the coop.  They have decided not to sign him to an offer sheet.  They are now pursuing 49ers restricted free-agent WR Tai Streets.  He is to meet with Jets officials this week.  I can't find any corroboration of this yet on "the Gridiron Newsstand".  So, if you can, please post.  Also, given this latest news, Dirk, you may want to tweak the title of this thread.  I was going to start a whole new thread, but did not think that this was news big enough yet to merit its own thread.  Just a suggestion! :)

Title: Re: Jets Offseason: Who will catch the damn ball?
Post by StegRock on Mar 16th, 2003, 8:08pm
Well, got some corroboration of the report above.  Between these two pieces out of "the Gridiron Newsstand" and ESPN, everybody from the likes of Streets, to Marcus Robinson, to Curtis Conway, to Kevin Johnson, to Kevin Dyson, to Antonio Freeman are speculated about:

http://www.nj.com/jets/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1047627015227570.xml;

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1524543.html.

The most likely candidate seems to be Streets as it is reported that the Jets and 49ers have already worked out a trade, which would entail the 49ers' signing him and then trading him to the Jets for less than a 1st round pick.  What do you all think?  I think he fits in better than Coles, actually, in the sense that he is different.  Before, Coles, Chrebet, Moss, 6 of one - half a dozen of the other, basically little fast guys.  Whereas, Streets brings size and power to the position with his 6'2", 206-lb. frame.  As such, I think he is a better complement.  I also think he is better than the rest of the guys listed, especially when considering his youth.

Well, for whatever it is worth, Peter King of CNN/SI thinks that the Jets should capitalize on Coles's success last season and move on...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/peter_king/news/2003/03/17/mmqb/

...to big rookie wideout Andre Johnson.

Sign Marcus Robinson and Curtis Conway.

Trust me, these two will be surprisingly good next season.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Title: Re: Jets Offseason: Who will catch the damn ball?
Post by StegRock on Mar 17th, 2003, 9:39pm
Here's the absolute latest according to ESPN's John Clayton:

"Conway makes pitch to Jets... Curtis Conway completed his visit to the Jets. 49ers receiver Tai Streets preceded him. Conway's pitch to the Jets is that he could easily ease the pain of losing wide receiver Laveranues Coles because they would get value without having sacrifice a first-round choice.
Conway tried to convince the Jets that his numbers were equal to if not better than the receivers whom the Jets are interviewing. Conway caught 71 passes in 2001 and was on pace to 86-catch season until a shoulder injury cut the 2002 year six games short.

Despite the six missed games, Conway was only 23 catches shy of Coles' two-year numbers and within one touchdown. The Jets are using Tuesday to debate whether to match the seven-year, $35 million deal Coles signed with the Redskins or sign Streets to an offer sheet. The Jets had a visit from Seahawks restricted free agent Darrell Jackson, but they apparently aren't going to make an offer. Kevin Dyson's visit to New York was cancelled by the team late last week.

Conway's point is that over a two-year period, is that he averaged 5.4 catches a game for 79.4 yard, while Coles averaged 5.5 catches and 79 yards a game over the same period."

Dyson's out; they seem to like Streets a lot, and Conway makes a hell of a pitch!

Well, it is now being reported that contract proposals have been exchanged between Streets's agent and the Jets.  Here is the proof right off "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A41762-2003Mar17.html.

And, as per "the Gridiron Newsstand", the Jets only have until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow to make a decision regarding Coles and they don't seem to be able/willing to match that $13-million signing bonus:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/story/68092p-63354c.html.

By the way, other teams mentioned courting Streets were the Patriots and Lions. [smiley=hmmmm.gif] The article also discusses the possibility of Raghib Ismail's going to Washington.

Looks like the Jets are going to keep fishing.  They made inquires into Cleveland WR Kevin Johnson but were rebuffed by Policy.  Johnson was given a 3.5 million signing bonus last August and the Browns don't want to eat his contract so soon after him signing it.  Here is the complete article:

http://foxsports.lycos.com/content/view?contentId=980114

Sounds like the Jets have pursued anyone and everyone out there.  I am not so sure why the Jets just don't sign Conway.  But apparently since they have tried everything BUT Conway, they don't like him too much.  I certainly don't see Freeman as a good choice.

So do they match the Redskins offer to Coles?  Time keeps ticking.....less than 24 hours to decide............

Title: Re: Jets Offseason: Who will catch the damn ball?
Post by BarnabyWilde on Mar 19th, 2003, 3:21am
Doesn't anybody want to play for the Jets? I think catching all thoses balls Pennington will be chucking would entice someone to want to be the number one.

Too bad SF and Clev won't let Streets or KJ go. I think either would be a good fit. Conway would be as well, especially if the Jets drafted a WR with one of their first rounders.

While Coles heads to Washington, it appears that the Jets will first turn their efforts to free-agent WR Curtis Conway as per a number of the reports, especially including the last one listed out of NewYorkJets.com, which gives a complete and ordered list of whom they intend to court or, in some cases, court again. This was some ride!  Conway, I think, is actually going to be a fine replacement as long as he can stay healthy.  He even brings a little more size/height to the position, which could actually better complement Chrebet and Moss.

I personally don't like the Conway signing...he's a little bigger than Coles, but the Jets lose a lot of speed, which is their strength.  Trying to cover Coles and Moss and having a little guy like Chrebet sneaking in under the coverage...it was a thing of beauty.

Conway is a good possession receiver, but I'm not sure that this is what the Jets need.  I'd rather have Conway than Freeman or Streets or many of the scrubs they were naming...I was REALLY hoping that they'd land Kevin Johnson.

Oh well...the Jets will be fine with Conway, but is DEFINITELY a step down.

Time to get back to my Jack Daniels... [smiley=alcoholic.gif]

Here is a diamond in the rough, as far as reporting goes, that I found on "the Gridiron Newsstand"...  KR/RB Chad Morton's deal is not quite yet a "done deal," so to speak.  Here is the piece from the New York Daily News:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/story/71748p-66563c.html.

Any thoughts?  I think they got to get these kinks worked out.  To me, though not much of a fantasy-relevant player, Morton is a high-quality NFL game-breaking kickoff returner.  They got to keep him in the fold AND happy! [smiley=yes.gif]

Title: Re: Jets Offseason Report
Post by Jetdoc on Apr 15th, 2003, 6:37pm
Well, I'll update everyone on the abyssmal offseason the Jets have had to preserve precious cap space.

Morton...gone
Coles...gone

Conway...in (who cares?)
Johnson...in (who cares?)

The Jets are going to have to bring in some decent talent in their rush defense and in the wide receiver department in the draft.  Everyone has Taylor Jacobs going to the men in green, but I think that Kelley Washington, if he falls, is a much better fit for their needs.

Santana Moss is entering into his third year, so he has to step up HUGE to fill in the gap that Coles left.  Jordan will see more touches now that Richie Anderson is gone, but I don't see Martin's touches declining significantly this year.  Jordan will also see some return duty to get him on the field more.

Overall, a bad offseason from a skilled position standpoint for the Jets, but nothing they can't recover from.  This definitely puts some question into Pennington's 2003 stock...will he be the Tom Brady of 2002?

He's not worth a 1st rounder, but the 9ers can't afford to lose him.  What if Streets is gone, it's Owens and.... Cedric Wilson?  Jed Weaver?  Brandon Lloyd? Ouch.  And your 3rd and 4th WR's would be a couple 5th and 6th round rookies.

Can't lose streets, although it's tough because he'll be gone soon anyway.

Any thoughts?  I think they got to get these kinks worked out.  To me, though not much of a fantasy-relevant player, Morton is a high-quality NFL game-breaking kickoff returner.  They got to keep him in the fold AND happy! [smiley=yes.gif]

being the guy who single-handedly beat the Bruins 17-7 in 1999 to end USC's 9 year losing streak, he's got a fond place in my heart.

That said, I'm not big on paying KR's big money but he did save the Jets season last year.

Conway was a solid move and willcome in as #1 barring injury. He is old, but gives them another year to find a WR next year...Maybe Gardner if he doesn't resign with the Skins, or even STreets. I think he will be avail next year too. They lost some very good players from the offensive side, but improved there DEF.
Pennington is a stud and still has Chrebet/ Mr reliable, and the improving MOss. Maybe the extra yr will give Moss enough time to reach his expecftations.Only time will tell. Martin/Jordan will carry them early on. I hate this damn division, its always SO tough. IMO BUFF has improved them most, Hands down its still the toughest DIV in the league, and i couldn't tell who will win it.

Well, for once, rather than my telling the story, ;D I'll let "The REAL Feed" tell it:

NFL Suspends Jets' Evans Indefinitely
AP Sports (27.06.2003 15:24)
New York Jets defensive tackle Josh Evans was suspended indefinitely Friday by the NFL for violating its substance-abuse policy for a third time.

Good thing they traded up in the draft...  I don't think this will hurt them too much...  they'll be solid with Robertson and Ferguson in the middle, but they are definitely lacking depth at DT now.

It's right now atop "The REAL Feed"...

Jets tackle hole in line by signing (Chester) McGlockton!

Here are further corroborative reports out of the local dailies covering the Jets readily available to you at "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Meanwhile, they are having a difficult time getting first-round draft pick Dewayne Robertson signed.  Here is substantiation from "the Gridiron Newsstand" on that:

Any thoughts on any of this, my fellow Gridironers, especially in light of the Josh Evans suspension?

Well, Robertson is in the fold finally!  Here is the update currently topping "The REAL Feed":

Robertson reaches agreement with Jets
NFL.com (19.07.2003 21:06)
The New York Jets reached an agreement in principle with first-round pick Dewayne Robertson, the day before players report for training camp.

There is really nothing else out there yet besides this AP report, which is directly available on "The REAL Feed (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/newsstand.htm)".
