Title: Panthers Offseason Report

5 yr deal for Stephen Davis...what is everyone's opinion? Good signing for Carolina? Where does he sit on the running backs list?

This is a huge signing for Carolina.  I think this addition to their offense, with an already potent defense, helps them immensely.

Davis, if he stays healthy, could have a huge year in Carolina.  They still have QB issues (are they really sticking with Rodney "Older than Dirt" Peete?) so will have to rely pretty heavily on the running game.

I've just moved Davis up on my draft cheat sheets.

Philly,

I know they signed Jake Dellhomne from the Saints, so I think there will be some competition for the starting QB job.

Interesting signing.  I did predict this ages ago.  It was the one team that actually made sense.

Would I move him up on the draft board?  Nah.  I still think he is the second tier back.  But I do think he will fit nicely with that offense.  Unfortunately, he does not have a good surrounding cast, especially on that O-Line.

Here what's available locally via "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/football/nfl/carolina_panthers/5379836.htm.

My take...  From early on, I perceived five teams desiring his services (to one degree or another).  They were the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  It ended up really coming down to just two, the Panthers and Texans, which tells me something.  The guy is playing at the age of 29 this year, not crusty, but no spring [smiley=chicken.gif] !  To me, of that original list of five, the Panthers and Texans were the fourth and fifth best matches, respectively, at least stats-wise.  I think he could have been way better with any of the other three.  But, ultimately, it really only was a two-horse race, and I think for fantasy purposes the Panthers are a much better choice than the Texans.  Does that bump him up my list?  Well, first, that is predicated on my even having a "list" at this point, which I do not.  I can put it this way, though.  As Dallas, Tampa Bay and New England exited the Davis derby, his value had already been spiraling downward.  This was just the best of two worst-case scenarios.  I see him putting up these kinds of numbers next year:  maximum - 1,250 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns rushing, minimum - 950 and 7.  I think he has that big of a "window" with Carolina.

I will add this much.  The Panthers do seem to be working on building their offensive line up, especially considering their other signing as of late of OG Doug Brzezinski formerly of the Eagles.  Here is the lowdown on him and his signing from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

He's from Philadelphia.  Do you Eagles guys have any takes on him?

First off... on the Carolina QB issue.  It's nice that they'll have some open competition between Peete, Delhomme, Weinke, and Fasani, but that's the same as a road test between a Hyundai and a Kia.  They're both serviceable cars, but I'd rather be driving a German import...

Secondly... I still think that Davis to Houston would have been the best fit.  I'm not sold on any of the Texans RBs, but they have a solid QB and a young WR/TE corps that can certainly get better.

Finally... on the signing of Doug Brzezinski... he was a quality backup guard and part-time starter in his 4 years with the Eagles.  He was just never able to prove to be a better player than John Welbourn or Jermane Mayberry.  He plays with a chip on his shoulder and is a great guy in the locker room.  Not sure how he'll do as a starter, but he very well could be the type who will turn out to be solid lineman when he gets the starters reps in practice.

WOW, are you guys kidding. This was a great fit for him. TB's offense uses too many backs for a change of pace, Gruden has always done that. Parcells wants a RB that he can mold and will get one in the draft to compete with Hambrick who will be a free agent next year. NE still has not said that they are looking for another RB, but will get one in the draft as well since Smith only has 2 yrs left on his deal.
Lamar Smith had 7 TDs last year in only 11 games. The OL will be better and the QB area should improve with Delholme. Plus in his last game he only had 8 carries.

SDavis had 7 TDs last year in limited time and should get 1000-1200 yds and 9-12 tds, not GREAT #s for a #1 but solid for a #2 RB.  This is a much better fit for him than the building Texans. Fox likes to run, and Foster is DONE, can you say Robert Edwards???

"Are you kidding me?" ???

Do your homework, dude.  Look at, for example, my final predictions vis-a-vis yours.  Quite similar!  I think you were getting a little confused between "from an NFL team perspective" and "from a fantasy vantagepoint" and just general commentary.  And, what the hell does Robert Edwards have to do with any of this?  There is no real valid analogy between Edwards and Davis to be made. Stegey can you read???? I said that FOSTER was DONE!!! His injury is not healing...similar to what happened to Robert Edwards.
I was stating that Foster will not be a factor and SD will be the man. Please rethink your statements before you post my friend.
I was agreeing with you, and if you re-read my post i stated that he should be a good #2 RB FANTASYwise. That's all i was saying my friend. If you look at SD's 3 yrs avg #s before Spurrier he averaged 1300+ yds and 11 Tds. He is a pounder, just what Fox wants. Its the best fit for him IMO.

Robert Edwards healed... albeit it took a few years, but in his first came back, if I do recall correctly he had 2 or 3 TDs?

Stephen Davis will continue to be an underrated back from an NFL perspective and an OVERRATED back from a fantasy perspective, and I was, and maybe still am, one of those people that fantasy wise, overrated Davis. He will continue to produce as he did in Washington, which ain't all that bad...

Davis is still a quality #2 fantasy back, even with the change of scenery. In fact, the move may help his stats as I feel Carolina will run the ball more than Washington.

Great piece out of Fanball here.  They see Davis getting back to 1,000 yards rushing and double-digit touchdowns.  This is a must-read for every hardcore fantasy footballer:

Now a 3 yr deal for Ricky Proehl. He will not start, but play his familiar role as #3 behind Smith and Muhammad.

What do you guys think, good signing?

He might get the nod for a start... Muhammad, sadly, but true, will end up injuring himself again...

I really hate to see Muhammad troubled with all these injuries. He was always a favorite of mine to watch play. He could have been a top reciever... injuries hurt the careers of MANY would-be great players... so sad... :'(

The Panthers' management reminds me of a desperate fantasy GM...  Taking a chance on an upswing, but retread, running back; sticking it out with a disappointing quarterback, but tempering their expectations, and lastly getting their hands on and maintaining a solid bunch of "throw-in" receivers. [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif] Here is the LATEST from "the Gridiron Newsstand" regarding their signing of Dyson and the likelihood of Weinke's staying:

HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand"...  Reports out of The Charlotte Observer have RB DeShaun Foster being almost all the way back and ready for the opening of training camp:

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/football/nfl/carolina_panthers/5702785.htm.

They say, "he looks great!"  Given Stephen Davis's, relatively speaking, somewhat modest contract, could Foster still be their running back of the future?  I think it is possible, which makes him an intriguing prospect in deep-keeper and dynasty leagues!  Any more thoughts, fellas?

Whoo! I'm about to take Steve Smith... he should put up great #'s. Someone has got to catch the balls over there and with my league rewarding pts for return yards, DAMN! As a second flex player too...

Well, there is actually some pretty good news coming out about RB DeShaun Foster. [smiley=ohshit.gif] Here it ALL is by way of "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.journalnow.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WSJ%2FMGArticle%2FWSJ_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031770159078&path=!sports!football&s=1037645509262;

http://www.gastongazette.com/Portal/ASP/sports/panthers/PanthersDisplay.asp?ID=341.

Even though one of the articles suggests that if he is 100%, Foster could split carries with Davis, I don't think this affects Stephen Davis's FF value at all, at least not for this year.  But, I do think that it puts Foster back on the (draft) map, especially in DEEP keeper leagues.  Davis does have his own "rich" history of injuries, though, too, remember. [smiley=hmmmm.gif]

------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other Panthers news, the 4-way "QB battle" is going to be one to watch: [smiley=checkin.gif]

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/football/nfl/carolina_panthers/6362952.htm.

While Peete is the incumbent, the younger Delhomme is right on his tail and Weinke and Fasani have not been ruled out entirely.  Who do you think wins the job?  I think it is Peete Week 1 and he will be decent until he gets injured at which time Delhomme will take over, and I think Delhomme goes on to succeed, for all intents and purposes ending Peete's career.  Bottom line, Peete's gotta' stay healthy if he wants to be playing in '04, and I just don't think he will.

Did anybody see the game last night? I will start off by saying that the Skins SUCK:  [smiley=takinyours.gif] [smiley=gettinridden.gif] [smiley=gettinhammered.gif]. The kicker had a solid game,  [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif].
Back to the Panthers:
SD looks great. running by guys, over guys, around guys. The QBs looked terrible. OL good. The DEF was the show. They shut down the skins on all but 1 series, and on that one they stoppped a 4th and 1 inside the 10 with a forced fumble/sack and recovered it!
SD should make it back to the pro bowl.

Thanks for the update.  I think Carolina will surprise more than a few teams this year.  If they can get a QB playing decently so that the opposing defenses can't concentrate solely on stopping Davis.

Speaking of their QB's, Philly, the question is getting to be...  Should Chris Weinke be given another look with the first-team offense?  According to this report, from a LOCAL source on "the Gridiron Newsstand", the answer is YES:

http://www.gastongazette.com/Portal/ASP/sports/panthers/PanthersDisplay.asp?ID=393.

The question might soon actually be...  Will Chris Weinke be the starter... come Week 1? :o
