Title: Browns Offseason Report
Post by StegRock on Mar 16th, 2003, 2:01pm
HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand", the Cleveland Browns are going to vigorously try to trade RB Jamel White.  Here is the report:

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/1047810913278910.xml.

They mention Detroit as one possibility.  I think he could be a great fit there.  How 'bout you guys?

Edited to broaden the Topic!

Detroit=James Stewart?  ???

Detroit giving up on him? He had a nice season last year..

I like it. Stewart is good, but injuries are taking a toll. He still could be a serviceable starter, but White is a nice change of pace back, and in the West Coast O, could put up some good numbers as a starter, maybe a low 2/high 3 fantasy back.

I think Detroit would be a great fit for Jamel. With Stewarts injury troubles, it would give him a chance to get more carries.  And even if James Stewart stays healthy, Jamel White would be a perfect third down back.  I see him playing a Fred Beasley type role on third downs for Mooch.

The other teams interested are intesting.  Dallas would be wonderful fit too.  Jamel could be Parcels NY  Dave Meggett or Jets Anderson.

I wonder why the Redskins did not pursue him?  I personally think he is better than Trung Canidate.  He is a great receiver out of the backfield which is what Spurrier wants.

I gotta wonder what Cleveland is thinking?  I would keep him for another year.  His price his not too bad for a solid back-up RB that can still play a critical role on your team.  Willie Green had one solid year, but he is an injury away from leaving Cleveland screwed again in the RB position.  Not so sure it is in their best interest to get rid of him.   I think Cleveland should suck it up for one year, over pay him a little for the insurance he provides.

Well, here is the rhetoric coming out of "the Gridiron Newsstand" regarding the Browns' not planning to trade K. J. or Jamel White.  The first story regards just the receivers; the second one mentions Jamel as well:

http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/football/nfl/cleveland_browns/5436440.htm;

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/1048156627207070.xml.

I, for one, think that they would move K. J. for the right deal, but I think they will manage to keep Jamel, stymieing his career for at least one more year. [smiley=nono.gif]

Well, it is currently topping "The REAL Feed"...  The contract offer to LB Jamir Miller by the Browns has been rescinded, effectively ending Miller's tenure with the Browns and maybe in the NFL, period, as you will see.  Here it all is from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

The Browns' withdrawl of the contract -
http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/football/nfl/cleveland_browns/5830249.htm;

Miller's consideration of retirement -
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/105221490743890.xml.

Are there any thoughts on this?  I know he has been plagued by injuries in his relatively short career.

A little more on the Jamir Miller situation. Doctor's are advising for him to retire.

Guys, just checkin' here (particularly given some of the posts I noticed on the Buccaneers thread)!  You all do know that Jamel White's being signed to a 4-year deal litters "The REAL Feed (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/newsstand.htm)", right?  And, here are some nice pieces of corroborative evidence and further discussion by local sources available as such ONLY on "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Butch Davis is down playing QB controversy.  Looks like he is giving Couch the edge.(for now)

Well, THEY'RE OFF... Couch and Holcomb, that is!  Here is how it reads atop "The REAL Feed" right now:

"Couch, Holcomb begin QB auditions
NFL.com (10.06.2003 18:10)
The Browns just opened a three-day minicamp, and it didn't take long for the talk to swirl around whether Tim Couch or Kelly Holcomb will be the starting quarterback."

Here are some stories elaborating on the issue, HOT from the LOCAL sources available on "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/football/nfl/cleveland_browns/6053405.htm;

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index_story.ssf?/sports/more/ap/s10withers.html.

Any thoughts from our "Gridiron Greats" as "the games begin"?

Title: Re: Browns Offseason Report
Post by bgsgfan on Jun 11th, 2003, 4:41pm
I have to think they will stay with Couch.  Recent football history is filled with stories of acclaimed backup QBs who performed well in that role and then did not so well as a starter.  It just makes sense to stay with Couch, who certainly has not lost the job.  If Couch needs benching, you can bring in Holcombe and it fits in with the whole flow of things while if you look at it the other way around, it is a double change (Couch to Holcomb to Couch).

This way, if Holcombe does take over, it can happen similar to the way Maddox came in for Stewart last year.

Well, Butch Davis is "confirming" that his QB sitch will remain "unconfirmed" going into training camp.  Here is the local report from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/football/nfl/cleveland_browns/6330902.htm.

I, for one, think that Kelly Holcomb has a legit shot at the job! [smiley=yes.gif] What do you guys think?

Title: Re: Browns Offseason Report
Post by PrimeTime on Jul 18th, 2003, 9:17pm
I agree with you Steg.  I know a few of the articles I've read mention that alot of the team is behind Holcomb.

I think if Couch was going to develop he would have by now. (Or at least have shown improvement from year to year).

You need to stay away from both these QB's or draft them both [smiley=whatever.gif] [smiley=whatever.gif]

I still think Couch gets the job... but that's just a hunch...

Title: Re: Browns Offseason Report

I still think Couch will win the job. Holcomb played well in a few games, but only time will tell. It seems that the old idea of not losing your starting spot due to injury is long gone!

Title: Re: Browns Offseason Report
Post by bgsgfan on Jul 19th, 2003, 9:41am
If their performance is close at all, the nod has to go to Couch.  I don't think he will hold onto the job past the middle of the season, however.  My guess is that he will be slightly dinged up and the Browns will "give him some time to recover".  What they will really be doing is giving Holcomb an opportunity.

I wouldn't draft either of them, but I might pick Holcomb off waivers after a few weeks.

The latest on the Cleveland quarterback derby from "The REAL Feed":

Davis speaks: Couch to start for Browns on Saturday
ESPN NFL (08.08.2003 12:44)

Here is corroboration from a LOCAL source on "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index_story.ssf?/sports/more/ap/s08couch.html.

Davis "says" that no conclusions should be drawn from this. [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] For us fantasy footballers,... round 1 to Couch, which I think we all knew was going to happen.  I would be surprised if he doesn't "start" the season.  The leash will be short, though.  I'm not big on "handcuffing" players, but this is one case that if you have Couch, you'd better get your hands on Holcomb as well. [smiley=yes.gif]

Title: Re: Browns Offseason Report
Post by StegRock on Aug 11th, 2003, 6:49pm
Well, it's hard to read what is in Butch Davis's head regarding his QB's, but these reporters, especially the writer of the first piece, think that it is a foregone conclusion that Couch will, at least, "start" the season:

http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/football/nfl/cleveland_browns/6505966.htm;

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sports/1060594926180930.xml.

I actually concur with these two guys' takes.  Both articles are very good reads, in any case.
