Miami is looking to pursue the services of Junior Seau, and who can blame them. Even if he's at a decline in his career, he's still a Top 25 LB, that's how GREAT he was.

I couldn't find any specific thread for a general Dolphins OffSeason Report... so hopefully I got it right by doing this...

This is fine!  There was a thread regarding the Dolphins' signing of Derrius Thompson.  I should have changed the topic of that thread to "Dolphins Offseason Report".  That's my bad. [smiley=no.gif] Here is a link to that thread, but let's keep "Dolphins Offseason" discussion on this thread:

http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=55;action=display;num=1047084279.

However, you should have added a [smiley=fish.gif] as your message icon.  I hope you don't mind my doing so! [smiley=awwgee.gif]

Just to update this:

Miami meets all 4 requirments that Seau wants and both team and player have sent feelers out. If something happens expect it to be soon and look for Miami to trade for Seau now rather then wait until June 1st when he is released and will command more interest.

Seau will need to take less money and restructure.

As a Miami fan I think it will be a good signing but will all depend on what kind of contract he signs.

This will be a good fit for both parties...if he is cheap...Miami will prolly give up a 5-6th rounder for him in this yrs draft. He still has 2 solid yrs left and teamsed w/ Zach would be tough to beat.

Speaking of Zach he signed an extension today through 2008. This frees up the cap room for Seau.

Seau will not only bring an upgrade of talent at the OLB position, but will also bring a motivation in the Miami lockerroom, which may light a fire under the Dolphins so games like last year's Vikings game don't happen. Zach Thomas doesn't seem to be able to do so himself... no doubt Seau will...

Big media news sources are okay, but I prefer to get mine from the horse's mouth and substantiate the report by way of "the Gridiron Newsstand".  So, with that said, here are the local reports regarding Thomas's extension:

HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand", it seems like the Dolphins are going to put an offer on the table for Seau here sometime soon and make a deal with the Chargers as there seems to be a number of teams in the mix and they don't want to lose out by waiting until June 1st:

They can afford to wait until June 1st but they won't. Miami fans are plenty upset with the lack of F/A signings especially with what NE and BUF did this off season. It appears they will only need to give up something like a 5th or 6th round pick to get Seau in ASAP.

But even if they waited I could still see Miami getting him as both parties have said they want the other.

I think he is a perfect fit: exp, skills, runstuffer, smart..a bit slow..., covers ok,and can't be worse than what we have.Face it!!! We have been trying to get a solid/GOOD
OLB through the draft for yrs and can't do it... on either side...SO JR fitss the 2 year void.
SF, Raider and DEN all use this 1-3 yr contract VETS to "borrow" time for them to get short term production and leadership.
He is cheap IMO, and fits the bill.

He is no prize but he is an upgrade from Haley, who it appears will be traded or will sign with another team. But to be honest we were already deep at DL and this signing will probably be viewed as a waste of money.

Here is the Miami Dolphin schedule for 2003. I like it, 5 national games and some great matchups. Only problem I have is the early bye week.

Well, first of all, as per the current headline atop "The Real Feed", the Michael Thompson deal has been nixed.  Check out "The Real Feed" for details...

Secondly, here is a little more local lowdown from "the Gridiron Newsstand" regarding the Dolphins' interest in Seau:

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/football/5545739.htm.

Looks like they are willing to part with one of their later-round picks for him.  I think it would be worth it if there is a real chance that if they wait until June 1st, they won't get him.

Knight to visit Steelers early next week
Former Saints safety Sammy Knight is finally hitting the road. He visits the Steelers early next week and is trying to schedule a visit to the Dolphins. Despite being one of the league leaders in big plays (interceptions, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries) over the past few years in New Orleans, Knight hasn't had many calls in the early phase of free agency.

Well, what Bouve was reporting was being corroborated on "the Gridiron Newsstand".  Here are a couple articles purporting the likelihood/probability of Seau's going to the Dolphins in a trade... by Monday... tomorrow:

But, as of the update at midnight April 14th on "The REAL Feed", it is appears that a kibosh is going to be put on the deal.  Here is ALL the ABSOLUTE LATEST from "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Any thoughts, anyone (Bouve)?

Title: Re: Dolphins Offseason Report
Post by Bouve on Apr 14th, 2003, 2:37pm
basically it comes down to if Seau will forgo the money he is owed so a deal can be made. I have heard that Seau and Miami have a deal already and just need the trade to happen. But Seau looks like he wants to stick it to SD by not allowing the trade until after he gets his money. Can't really blame him as its guranteed money.

If nothing happens within the next hour an a half then it probably won't happen till June 1st so SD can take the hit over 2 years instead of 1.

This is definitely a great signing for the Fins.  As one of my friends, who is a Dolphins fan, was saying to me yesterday, if nothing else, he brings VERY MUCH-NEEDED leadership and charisma to the Dolphins defense, in particular, and team, overall.  That said, he still brings some pretty darn good tools to the table, as well.  Also, and this does not really deal with football, but I feel that Miami, the city of Miami, is a perfect fit for Seau.  He's just a warm-weather, "island" type of guy, right? The Miami Herald reports Dolphins HC Dave Wannstedt on Wednesday said he ''still sees us trying to do two or three deals'' and listed safety, young linebacking depth and the offensive line as priorities. Miami hasn't made an offer to free-agent S Sammy Knight (Saints). ''Sammy's an impressive guy and we would love to have him,'' Wannstedt said. ``I don't know if we can make it work.'' The Dolphins remain in negotiations with restricted free-agent S Arturo Freeman. ''We've got enough needs,'' Wannstedt said. ``Anywhere we can try to improve, I'm trying to do that. We're not going to sit back and do nothing.'' Wannstedt spoke with free-agent WR Oronde Gadsden's agent this week, but the free agent receiver remains undecided on his plans. Meanwhile, new Dolphins LB Junior Seau, who said ''San Diego is always going to be my home,'' will join Miami's off-season workout program for good in a week.

Some Ricky Williams news for everyone:

RICKY WORKING HARD

We're hearing that Dolphins running back Ricky Williams quietly has been busting his butt in preparation for the 2003 offseason.

The team is impressed that Williams likewise has not found any off-field trouble (or vice-versa) since the completion of the 2002 campaign.

Last year, Williams was arrested not long after being traded to Miami, which arguably took some shine off of the transaction.

Of course, the arrest was soon forgotten as Williams rushed for 1853 yards in his first year with the Fins.  And with Williams apparently focused on bettering that mark in 2003, he could make a run at the single-season rushing mark.

In all honestly Steg I had heard this before but didn't want to post it and not have a link or something to back it up. Obviously in a few weeks when camp starts more news will come out about what he has been doing to prepare.

And not to take away from your site but that site is actually pretty solid for info and in many cases have been correct in their assessments of moves and rumors.

But obviously I would perfer to read it coming from a newspaper like the SS in Miami than a website but as I said I had heard this before and just needed a link so it wouldn't look like Bouve/RW propaganda.

Hey Bouve- I think that the addition of Junior will be a huge help for Ricky Williams this year and was wondering what you thought. I see Miami being up in most games because of their stingy "D", so Ricky should run wild in the 2nd half of games. He did so last year, but this year, he will be better. Any thoughts or am I just wishing too hard?

Even if they didn't bring in Seau that D was already primed to be one of the best in the league. With Seau they upgraded over Derrick Rodgers. But you right in that RW should do some great things in the 2nd half of games but remember people thought that last year and he went out and did plenty of it early in the game.

The knock on him was that he was a power runner who would wear down the D then get his yards late, which is true but he showed last year he can break the long run and consistently rake up the yards no matter what quarter it was.

If all goes well look for close to or even more than 2000 yards on the ground foe the dreaded beast :)

If they draft a safety Knight probably won't be signed. Iff Pitt doesn't draft Polamalu then they will probably sign Knight.

well as I reported earlier they let Jermaine Haley go, they got a 7th round pick for him.

They also traded their 2nd round pick next year in exchange for the Pats 2nd round pick 78 this year. They now have 10 picks in the draft.

Well after a piss poor draft they finally did something right and released Ray Lucas.

looks like Griese to Miami is a done deal.

GRIESE TO MIAMI A SURE THING
Despite speculation that some team other than the Dolphins could put together a sufficient package to persuade soon-to-be-released Broncos quarterback Brian Griese to pass on joining the team for which his father played, our sources tell us that Griese to Miami is sure thing.

And the word is that Griese will get far less money up front than his agent, Ralph Cindrich, is posturing for.

Griese will be installed as the No. 2 quarterback behind Jay Fiedler. His contract could be as short as one year in duration, which would enable him to look for a starting job elsewhere in 2004.

Is is just me that thinks Fiedler sucks! [smiley=getoff.gif]
If this becomes a done deal, Griese would be an improvement over Fiedler! Just think how good Williams could become if they have a QB who can pass! [smiley=hmmmm.gif]

Great news for Dolphin fans in my opinion. I actually do like Griese, even if he is a pansy..

Miami traded Derrick Rodgers to New orleans for a 7th round pick. Odd thing is Miami would have released him June 1st anyway so basically they got something for nothing.

Miami signs another Arena star. I personally have loved the Arena league and NFLEUROPE to help develop these guys that need hands on playing time to improve. The NFL is full of these guys. Warner, Maddox, Gasden a bunch of OL and WRs too.
Chris Jackson has spent time with SEA, GB, TENN and now the FINS. he had 117/1700+ yds and 47 tds last yr in the Arena league. Rice he is not, but Gasden did well for us for a few yrs and this guys has size/speed worth investing in IMO. Maybe if nothing else he can return kicks for us. I have felt for yrs we didn't have enough speed. I like Gasden, but he is stale and we need some fresh blood. Only time will tell. He can't be worse than Dedric Ward can he???

More evidence that the Greise deal ain't a done deal yet. the two sides are still far apar on incentives and Greise's agent said they may look elsewhere...

[smiley=doh.gif]If we screw this up i wants someones head on a platter. I like Feidler, don't get me wrong, but when you can get another starter quality QB as a backup...open the wallet a bir more. Restructure Madison's or Taylor's deals. In the grand scheme I think we are lowballing him. Hell we are not talking Lucas here. WE are talking a former probowler. It took us 30 yrs to get a solid RB for petes sake. I'm losing my respect for Wanny on this one. We have no prob getting DEF players, but when it comes to the offense we are too CHEAP.  [smiley=scream.gif]  [smiley=shootmyself.gif] [smiley=coolit.gif]

GReise FINALLY LANDED!!!!!!!!!!!! [smiley=havinablast.gif] [smiley=moon.gif]

Its about damn time. WE gave him a signing bonus of $1M..I'm sure he got some solid incentives too. I don't know if he can help us win the Bowl, but he would have won at least 1 of the games that Lucas lost last year and we would have won the DIV and went to the playoffs! [smiley=soapboxer.gif]. Like i was saying if we screwed this up i would have been pissed. I'm just glad its over...Now he can fall the driveway of his new house in MIA..or maybe fall over a moving box and break his ankle.   [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif].. Whatever he is a major upgrade at #2 qb and could/should be our guy of the future. He will fit our offense just fine.

Yea, DOLFAN, that's the news toppin' "The REAL Feed"!  Here are a couple primary sources corroborating and expanding on the report from "the 'greater' Gridiron Newsstand":

Nice reads, neither of which are just the AP announcement.  They both offer up a little more.

obviously a solid signing by the Fins in a few ways. Its financially sound and provides a quality backup if Fiedler were to get hurt again.

Miami Dolphins: Three-year veteran Arturo Freeman, who will be forced to compete with newcomer Sammy Knight for the starting strong safety job, re-signed with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday. The team's full-time starter in 2002, Freeman signed a one-year contract for $605,000. That is the amount of the restricted free agent qualifying offer that Miami made to Freeman in February to retain a right of first refusal.

Several teams, notably the New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins, demonstrated some interest in the former Boston College star as a restricted free agent this offseason, but a neither team ever made a firm proposal on an offer sheet.

Freeman, 26, was a fifth-round choice in the 2000 draft.

The Dolphins signed Knight, a former Pro Bowl performer who voided his contract with the New Orleans Saints in February to become a free agent, because they want to increase the number of big plays at the strong safety spot. Knight leads all NFL strong safeties in big plays over the past three seasons.

In his 16 starts in 2002, Freeman registered 96 tackles, third-most on the team, and had 1 1/2 sacks. But he did not have an interception and was credited with four passes defensed, seven fewer than in 2001, when he primarily played as a "nickel" defender. If Freeman does not sign an extension, he will be eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring.

Gasden finishes F/A tour back where it started...Miami. He Refused an extension last year in hopes of more $. He passed on a 3 yr deal from Minny for $3M. He now signs with Mia for the league min $530K and $25K signing bonus. Also he needs to fight for a roster spot.
Dumbass greedy bastard! I like him, but got what he deserved!

Jay Fiedler's back is spazzin' and keepin' him out of practice, givin' Bob Griese's son more reps with the first team offense, and in other news Oronde Gadsden's injury has been determined to be a dislocation not a ligament strain.  Here is how it all reads on "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Griese will continue to climb up the charts. I hope it doesn't full the fire talks. It may be just like Garcia, only more people talking because Brian is starter material.
