Title: Who has the best keepers? Post by Daunte Williams on Apr 21st, 2003, 4:12pm Hey fellas- I am getting the itch and was thinking about the possible keepers in my league. My league is a yardage league with TD's only worth 2 points. The scoring is as follows: 1pt= 20 yds passing 1pt= 10 yds rushing 1pt= 15 yards receiving Who do you think has the best reserves heading into this season. Team A= Rich Gannon & Shaun Alexander Team B= Daunte Culpepper & Ricky Williams Team C= Clinton Portis & Ahman Green Team D= Kurt Warner & Travis Henry Team E= Deuce McCallister & Jamal Lewis Team F= Ladanian Tomlinson & Edgerin James Team G= Mike Vick & Willie Green or Fred Taylor Team H= Peyton Manning & Marvin Harrison Team I= Priest Holmes & Corey Dillon Team J= Marshall Faulk & Tiki Barber |

Title: Re: Who has the best keepers? Post by Philly on Apr 21st, 2003, 4:52pm I'd rank them this way: 1. B 2. A 3. F 4. G 5. D 6. H 7. J 8. E 9. C 10. I (assuming that Priest either holds out or is not recovered from his injury) |

Title: Re: Who has the best keepers? Post by Cirrinone on Apr 21st, 2003, 6:38pm I'd have to say Team F did the best. I think LT will continue his reign, while Edge bounces back VERY nicely into a Top 5 RB again. Then I'd say team G. Both William Green and Fred Taylor are going to do great this year, assuming Taylor can stay away from injury and well, Mike Vick is Mike Vick. 8) Then, Team E... Lewis bounces back almost as well as Edge does (even though Lewis was pretty good LAST year). Next, team B. Culpepper is going to have a huge year. Sorry I didn't throw the others in there; running short on time. But it looks like a very competitive year next year for that league ;). |

Ahman is an injury case. With his asthma(sp) and knee problems I really think he is in trouble. Last year he was starting to lose carries, and I think he will continue to lose carries. Clinton is great!!! But pair with Ahman that team is a huge question mark........... |

Title: Re: Who has the best keepers? Post by Philly on Apr 21st, 2003, 8:54pm Just based on the scoring system, a QB could throw for 4000 yards (easily attainable for some of the QBs listed) and a RB would have to rush for 2000 yards to match those yardage points (2000 yards is quite difficult, even for the best RBs). Then, a QB like Culpepper could easily throw for 30 TDs, while a RB is never going to rush for 30 TDs to match, so I think QBs have a HUGE edge in this scoring system - hence the reason I put the pairs with QBs higher. Receivers probably aren't very big scorers in this system - they'd need 3000 yards receiving to match the first example I gave - will never happen. Portis-Green is so low because Green is a big question mark. He is not very durable and he's likely to only get about 1200-1400 yards and 10-14 TDs at best. Portis is solid, but not in that pair. Hence, a pairing like Culpepper and Williams would be the best of the duos listed. |

Title: Re: Who has the best keepers? Post by Daunte Williams on Apr 21st, 2003, 11:15pm Very good analysis Philly. You are correct in saying that WR's do not score as many points and are not nearly as valuable as QB's & RB's. Great insight by all posters, thanks. |

Title: Re: Who has the best keepers? Post by PA Outlaws on Apr 22nd, 2003, 10:15pm Great insight fellas, but DAMN Gannon gets no love! He was the #1 point getter in our league and probably in many others. The Raiders will throw the ball even more this year! You heard it hear first! Of course I'm a little biased since I am the team with Gannon and Alexander!!! [smiley=gettinridden.gif] (Damn I love this Smiley!) |

Title: Re: Who has the best keepers? Post by Philly on Apr 23rd, 2003, 6:32am Will Brown and Rice be able to get open even while using a walker? Can Gannon throw the ball while using a cane? The Raiders offense will continue to be impressive, but if you think they'll be as good (or better??) than next year, I think you're in for a rude awakening... [smiley=doseofreality.gif] |

Title: Re: Who has the best keepers? Post by Philly on Apr 23rd, 2003, 8:52pm Well Gannon had a better year in 2002 than he did in 2001, though he threw less TDs and more INTs. Rice had a little bit more yardage in 2002 compared to 2001, but his TDs were down. Brown had less yards and many less TDs in 2002 compared to 2001. So, yes, they did say that last year, and they were definitely right about Brown, Rice was a push, and Gannon they were wrong about, but a lot of that is a product of a weaker running game than a year earlier. |

But, according to how I am reading between the lines here, according to PA's logic that the naysayers of Gannon, Rice, Brown & Co. were predicting almost total "doom and gloom", wouldn't it be more like one right prediction (Brown) and two incorrect forecasts, one VERY incorrect (Gannon) and one, not very, but definitely incorrect (Rice)? And, if you want to throw Garner in there, I would say a third basically incorrect prediction, making the overall count one-for-four, or, in other words, pretty poor (and I am a poet and don't know it [smiley=shrug.gif] ;) )! The following Raiders will still be solid next year: Gannon as a #1 fantasy QB, Rice as a #2 fantasy WR and Garner as a #2-3 fantasy RB; Porter, too, may ring in as a decent #2-3 fantasy WR. Brown will be relegated to the fantasy bench, probably serving at best as a #4-5 fantasy WR. How would you counter, Philly, anyone? I'm curious! |

Title: Re: Who has the best keepers? Post by PA Outlaws on Apr 23rd, 2003, 10:20pm Exactly Steg! I also think Porter could put up great numbers next year!! I think he is to well known to be a sleeper, but he could definitely turn into a #2 receiver next year! |

Gannon will still be a #1 QB, just not THE #1 QB. Rice will be a marginal #2 receiver. Garner will be a decent #2 RB, but only if he gets equal points for receptions. Porter will be a marginal #2 receiver. Brown will be on waivers. Now add in Jolley (who had a nice surge at the end of the season), Fargas (who won't matter fantasy-wise, but will take some time from Garner), and Johnson (who will be eased in at TE), and that's a lot of hands on the same ball. The only one who benefits from all that is Gannon. |

Title: Re: Who has the best keepers? Post by Razzak on Apr 30th, 2003, 4:28pm Team E= Deuce McCallister & Jamal Lewis Team F= Ladanian Tomlinson & Edgerin James With Rushing being better than Receiving, I really like these two teams. I like Team F a little better. Tomlinson really impressed me last year, and adding Boston sure can't hurt that offense. |

Title: Re: Who has the best keepers? Post by PA Outlaws on Apr 30th, 2003, 9:23pm I also always thought that 2 good RB's and you were set. But last year the teams with the "best RB duos" didn't do squat. It was shocking to me. Our SB champion one because of solid WR play all year. Granted Hasselback at the end of the year was the bomb! |

I still believe in the two running back theory. I think last year was the exception to the rule. With a solid backfield comes consistency, which is the key to winning in fantasy football. The other ways to build a team can work, but year in, and year out, two stud running backs is the way to go. When your second back is a good as the other team first back, that is a huge advantage! |
