Title: Diamond in the Rough: Aaron Stecker
Post by BarnabyWilde on Jun 4th, 2003, 11:50pm
With the current Michael Pittman situation, I thought it would be cool to feature Stecker. He could get the job outright out of training camp if he plays well in the preseason. Pittman sure didn't impress me last season.

Remember, in this Diamond in the Rough series, we are not looking at starters on a weekly basis, but guys who can start for you on a bye week for your normal starter, or a guy who may have a favorable matchup on a certain week that you may start becasue of that matchup.

KJ, what is your take on Stecker?

Stecker is a guy that you just want on your roster.. not good enough to start, but a guy ya want around. He has only played for MIA and TB. I think he has improved, but can't handle full time duties...yet. I would like to see him get more playing time though. Maybe he could do 8-12 carries a game, Alstott get 8-12 touches and Kirbt pick up the 3rd down duties. Gruden loves to use many backs in his rotation. I think he is a good fit for that, but is only worth a LATE pick and a #4 spot on your roster. UNLESS Pittman get cut outright then things may change, but in Pittmans temporary absence his value has gone up, i just dont have alot of faith/hope from a fantasy standpoint.

Stecker is a bigger version of Warrick Dunn. He can catch, has a great spin move, and explosiveness off the line.

His biggest flaw is that he's to impatient and won't wait for the holes to open up first. With experience this problem should be "fixed." I can't see Alstott being the main back much longer in Tampa Bay, and Pittman won't be a Buccaneer next season, I think, so look for Stecker to step up and produce.

Stecker's value just skyrocketed with Pittman probably missing at least half of the season, since his parole will be revoked, which could be six months in the pokey waiting for a trial.

Tough call on Stecker.  I don't think the Bucs will go with him.  I see the Bucs using Stephens over Stecker.  But more likely than that, I see the Bucs going after another RB.

Bottom line....Stecker is a special teams player and occasional 3rd down back.

I really just do NOT see Tampa going with Stecker.  He just seems like he has "perennial backup" written all over him.  I think they will more likely go with Stephens.  They may even dip into free-agency or seek a trade and try to acquire guys like Duce Staley, Thomas Jones, Jamal Anderson, Ron Dayne, Robert Holcombe, Robert Edwards, Dominic Rhodes or the "other" Ricky Williams, Jamel White, etc., etc., who knows Ricky Watters may even throw his hat back into the ring.  Regardless, though, I see Alstott still getting his share and eating up at least around half of whatever, just like he always has and mitigating the value of whoever that other running back is.
