Title: Falcons - Michael Vick Update
Post by Chumpzilla on Aug 16th, 2003, 10:05pm
FYI:

"Mike Vick was taken off the field on a cart after injuring his right leg Saturday night in an exhibition game against Baltimore. ESPN is reporting that the injury is a fractured fibula, the outer, smaller of the two bones between the knee and ankle. Vick appeared to fall awkwardly on his right knee, and grabbed it even before he fell all the way to the ground."

HOT off "the Gridiron Newsstand", here is the initial AP report that came out...

http://www.ajc.com/falcons/content/sports/falcons/0803/17earlyvick.html.

Great thread title, Chumpzilla, by the way! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] "Michael Vick Update"...  Hopefully we can keep ALL (future) updates on Vick and this injury on this thread so as to keep ONE nice and tidy, comprehensive, focused running resource documenting it!  That's the way to do it! [smiley=yes.gif] I am also pleased to see us avoid redundancy by not having different dudes, just rushing to post, starting like a dozen of these Vick threads (like you'll prevalently see elsewhere). Wow... this is HUGE!   :o [smiley=ohshit.gif] :o [smiley=ohshit.gif] :o

This is exactly why those early drafts are difficult.

Just a quick update from the Falcons web site.  Looks like a minimum of 6 weeks.

My quick take,... unless Vick is back by Week 5, he won't be back until Week 9, the week after the Falcons [smiley=turkey.gif] bye-week.

ESPNews reports Atlanta Falcons team doctors said six weeks would be the best-case scenario for QB Michael Vick (broken leg) to return to the field. However, they feel Vick will miss 8 to 10 weeks of action while he recovers from the broken leg he suffered Saturday, Aug. 16 against the Baltimore Ravens in pre-season action.

Here is a tid-bit from FANBALL:

Falcons: Vick could have ligament damage

The News
Mike Vick got some good and bad news about his ankle from his doctor Andrew Bishop on Sunday. The good news is upon reading Vick's X-rays Bishop was encouraged because the bone was not displaced. "It's a very clean break," the doctor told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Typically, it takes six weeks for a bone to heal," Bishop said. "That just means the bone is healed, it doesn't necessarily mean everything else is as it's supposed to be. It could be as little as six weeks. It could be eight, 10. We just have to wait and see." The bad news is the doctors still don't know if Vick has ligament damage and won't for another 10 days. If they find serious ligament damage, then Vick would have to undergo season ending surgery.
Our View
We’ll know more in the next seven to ten days if Vick is able to come back October 5 against the Vikings, so if Mike is already on your team we suggest not trading him until then. If you haven't drafted yet, this would be a good opportunity to get him at his lowest value in about a year as your second or third quarterback. When Vick returns, he'll prove to give resourceful owners great value.

THIS from "The REAL Feed"...

X-rays encouraging for Falcons QB Vick
NFL.com (21.08.2003 17:09)
Michael Vick received a good report after Atlanta Falcons orthopedist Andrew Bishop looked at X-rays of the quarterback's broken right leg.

ENCOURAGINGish!

And, from "the Gridiron Newsstand", here is Vick's most recent press conference:

This currently tops "The REAL Feed"...

Falcons: Vick's return at least a month away
NFL.com (15.09.2003 18:58)
Falcons quarterback Michael Vick's return to the field is still at least a month away and linebacker Will Overstreet's arm was placed in a sling.

Doug Johnson's value just went up a bit!

A little BIT!!!  I watched him play versus Washington.  He did not look too good.

Funny!  I thought Doug Johnson looked just fine (not great), especially considering the diminished receiving corps he is working with.  ...  Two sets of eyes, two realities!

Here's ALL the latest between the little war of words between Reeves and Vick regarding when he "should" be expected back in the Falcons' lineup brought to you by sources on "the Gridiron Newsstand":

It looks like we're going to be waiting one more month.... at least.  All I would ask, though, is...  If they ain't makin' the playoffs anyway and if he ain't really 100%, why bring him back at all this year?  I really don't think it will really matter for next season, that is if the argument that there is some value to just getting him some live game action is made. :-/

I think that is the argument.  Vick has not had any real game action with Peerless Price as his wideout.  I imagine Reeves would want to let him play on the ankle to get any butterflies out of his system before the season is over.

Exactly, why risk another injury.  If they have no shot at the playoffs.  Then the rest of the season is essentially an extension to the 2004 pre-season & should be treated as such.

...The 2003 version of which cost him AND the Falcons the 2003 REAL season.

Disclaimer:  That having been said, I am NOT a proponent of reducing the number of preseason games.

They are not going to make the playoffs.  They shouldn't ruxh him.  Could it be someone is worried about losing his job?

Here's "The REAL Feed" read:

Vick won't start but might play Sunday
ESPN: NFL (26.11.2003 18:28)
Reeves surprised at Vick's improvement ATLANTA -- On a day when he undertook his most extensive work yet in practice, and moved up from the "scout" team to the second-unit offense, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick demonstrated enough improvement that coach Dan Reeves allowed that the third-year veteran could see his first action of the season this weekend. Reeves earlier in the day announced that backup Doug Johnson, despite a record of 1-6, would again start for the Falcons (2-9). He stopped just shy in his...
