Title: 49ers - Garcia & Rattay thread
Post by StegRock on Sep 6th, 2003, 12:53am
Guys, let's face it...  We're gonna' need a season-long Jeff Garcia thread because these bulging discs of his will definitely be making news, and the news, all season long.  Anyway, the news now...  I thought this was an interesting thing to read:

...Erickson has vowed to open up the offense and throw the ball downfield more.  That could be a problem since Garcia doesn't have the strongest arm in the league...

Here is a link to the whole article, one of many '03 team preview reports available to you on "The REAL Feed", part of the ultimate FF resource on the net, "the Gridiron Newsstand": [smiley=awwgee.gif]

Hey, Stegrock!
Signed up as soon as I heard about the site.

On Garcia.  I think he just needs to get the ball somewhere in Terrell Owens' time zone.  His RBs will still give him options this year, too.  His real problem this year will be how long his defense keeps him on the field.  And how many points they need him to catch up.  That could put a bit of stress on his back.

Callie

Hey, "Callie", nice handle even though you pulled a bit of a switcheroo there on me! >:( ;) Anyway, WELCOME to the joint!  I really think this is the FF message-board forum you've been looking,... not for the kiddies.  You will REALLY enjoy the "adult" atmosphere here and I think become a GREAT contributor. [smiley=bow.gif] (gotta' have that far-east Asian thang goin' on ;) )  To think, all this time... about, well, "100 yards" away!  Thank goodness for that Dumpster over there. ;) Anyway, enough confusing everybody! [smiley=lost.gif] Make sure to check your "private messages".  The link is in the upper right-hand corner.  In any event, I am just happy you are here! [smiley=havinablast.gif]

As for Garcia, we'll see...  I definitely have my reservations about him this year and think Tim Rattay is a GREAT, savvy (read, sneaky [smiley=sneaky.gif] ) pick-up! [smiley=zenmaster.gif] (your Zen Master, Steegie-san)

Garcia looked pretty good last Sunday 8)  The Bears are HORRIBLE though, but time will tell about Garcia's back.  This game seemed to quiet the "Garcia will never last" commentary for at least this week :-X

I'm not sure whether or not Garcia will last the entire season. ???  I screwed up my back in high school pretty bad and had to do rehab for a while.  My back is ok now, but every once in a while, it'll give out on me because I bent at a weird angle or something really stupid.   :(  When that happens, I can barely move around for the next couple of days.  I can't imagine having bulging discs which is constant discomfort and pain and playing football.  Then again, he's a tough guy and the drugs help, but I personally don't think he'll last the entire season.   Which is fine with me because I don't have him.   [smiley=dancin.gif] ;D ;D ;D

Directly from "the Gridiron Newsstand", here are some "far-and-away" goodies...

Regarding the possibility/probability of a Garcia benching:

The case for benching Owens (more rhetoric than substance, actually, but who knows?):

Thoughts?

"The REAL Feed" says this...

Garcia misses practice with ankle injury
The Sports Network: NFL (29.10.2003 20:48)

This source from "the Gridiron Newsstand" notes that he is questionable for this week's game:

The following is a link to a "49ers Report Card".  Jeff got a C-!  OUCH!  ...

Garcia out this week.  Hopefully back after SF's bye.

Does this help or hurt Owens?

Definitely hurts IMO.  1st NFL start is always going to be butterfly-city.  He's not going to perform well enough to beat STL.

Yes.  It hurts Owens.  I have him in three leagues, and I'm considering.  I do have other options here and there.

Rattay likes to go to Streets.  Who knows how Erickson will play this.

Just wanting to update with some in-house stuff from "The REAL Feed" and "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Rattay to start at QB
USA Today: Sports (30.10.2003 19:06)
SAN FRANCISCO —Quarterback Jeff Garcia won't play Sunday in the San Francisco 49ers' game against St. Louis to rest his injured left ankle. Tim Rattay will make his first NFL start in place of Garcia,...

http://www.sf49ers.com/newsroom/DisplayNews.asp?newsid=1526.

I think Rattay is an intriguing pick-up and, moreover, PLAY this week in fantasy football. [smiley=wiseguy.gif]

Remember we had this discussion about Ferrotte and Moss and look what happened.  i beleive in the theory that backups rely on studs.  Tim Rattay backup and T.O. = stud.  Look for them to through it up to them alot.  Especially since their is a chance that they could be playing from behind.

Not much early word coming out on this.  Here's what it says on "The REAL Feed":

Erickson: 49ers QB Garcia will start if healthy
NFL.com (03.11.2003 20:35)
Tim Rattay was impressive in leading San Francisco to a Week 9 victory, but coach Dennis Erickson said Jeff Garcia will start again as soon as he's ready to go.

Whatever! [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] Rattay has another good game on Monday Night in two weeks against (that) PITTSBURGH (secondary) and we'll see!

From ESPN, one of the many links provided on "the Gridiron Newsstand (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/newsstand.htm)", which, I digress, is one of only a few resources on the net that need be bookmarked by every fantasy footballer, [smiley=awwgee.gif] I really like the way John Clayton puts all this in the following article:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=1652551.

I especially think that his last sentence is very poignant.

Here are "The REAL Feed" reads...

49ers QB Rattay to get third straight start
NFL.com (19.11.2003 21:18)
Quarterback Tim Rattay will get his third straight start for the San Francisco 49ers in Green Bay.

Rattay to start again for Niners
The Sports Network: NFL (19.11.2003 20:54)

Here is the LOCAL corroboration from "the Gridiron Newsstand"...

http://www.bayarea.com/mld/cctimes/sports/football/nfl/san_francisco_49ers/7302910.htm.

They're going to have a hard time justifying taking this guy out of the starting lineup...  I'm tellin' yous!

I think Rattay is a better fit for this offense than Garcia. I've seen Rattay play in college and I really thought he was severely over looked in the 2002 Draft. (7th RD 212th pick overall).

He throws a better deep ball than Garcia and he is willing to wait in the pocket for the deeper routes to develop, unlike Garcia who will take off running.

The proof is in the numbers. When Garcia was in the 49ers ranked 10 overall in offense (#5 Rush - #20 Pass). Since Rattay has been in they moved up to #5 in total offense (#5 Rush - #14 Pass).

To me it is obvious that the 49ers are going to stick with Rattay, why not just come out and say Tim is our guy at this point.

Like Mike Martz, he know Bulger was his guy but kept sugar coating Warner is the man. All it took was a phantom concussion to make the change.

First off, as I have vigorously professed throughout this site, I agree with #1 Steelers Fan.  Rattay is a better fit and has a bright NFL future.

That being said, here is how the immediate future of this situation looks as per "The REAL Feed":

Garcia to return as Niners' starter
ESPN: NFL (26.11.2003 18:28)
Rattay goes 2-1 in Garcia's absence San Francisco 49ers coach Dennis Erickson announced Wednesday that Jeff Garcia would return as the 49ers' starting quarterback. The 49ers play at Baltimore on Sunday. Tim Rattay had started the last three 49ers games while Garcia nursed an injured ankle. Garcia, a three-time Pro Bowler, had a partially torn ligament around his ankle. His streak of 61 straight starts, fifth longest among active quarterbacks, ended Nov. 2 when Rattay made his first NFL start against the St....
