Title: Any TE experts out there?
Post by CoachH on Sep 12th, 2003, 1:26pm
Is it just me, or is the TE position incredibly hard to project.  I know that besides Heap, Gonzo, and possibly Shockey, that the rest are fairly even.

Any insight as to who will do well on any given week?  Match-up picks really don't seem to work for me at this position.  Is there something I'm missing or is it just luck from week to week? :(

I really hate this position in FF.  Even when my stud WR or RB don't perform I can take stock in the fact that they will with all probability get back to producing.  The TE position, on the other hand, always seems like a crap shoot.

And, that is why TE's should be removed from mandatory play in fantasy football (but, of course, do whatever floats your boat... it's just that the guy who came up with mandatory TE's must have been a TE himself or at least a TA, Tight Asshole).  In leagues that play a deep set of receivers, only the three or so TE's that you mention in your post, CoachH, even "come in to play" (in both senses of the phrase).  And, doesn't that seem right? [smiley=yes.gif]

But, I must digress briefly...  I'm not sure if Gonzo is at the top of the "heap" or even in the top "heap" anymore.  For whatever it's worth, watch out for guys like Alge Crumpler and Randy McMichael in the immediacy AND the long-haul, and keep your eye on guys like Dallas Clark and L. J. Smith for a little bit down the road.

The main thing to figure out is if a team is Tight End friendly.  Some teams use 'em more than others.  Ask that question.  The other thing to watch for is the new trend to two Tight End sets.

By the way, Stegg - I have Heap in all four of my fantasy leagues!

This is a very good point.  I normally try to get a top TE when I'm drafting, but sometimes it just doesn't work out.  I've had very good success playing TE matchups off the waiver wire.

Did that with McMichael last year!
