Title: Houston Texans - Week Nine Analysis Post by Jetdoc on Nov 2nd, 2003, 11:13am Sorry this is so late in coming guys - I've been swamped at work and will probably be next week as well. The Texans face the highly one-dimensional Carolina Panthers this week, in a homecoming for coach Dom Capers. The Texans come off a near upset of the Indianapolis Colts last week, in which the Houston media has been all over their offensive coordinator for being too conservative in the playcalling. I expect Houston's passing game to reopen this week against a weak Carolina secondary. QB David Carr is out this week with an ankle sprain, but it sounds like he will almost definitely play next week. Tony Banks gets the nod over Dave Ragone (which is a bit controversial in Houston, given that the Texans' have an interest in showing off Ragone as future trade bait). Banks is an oldie but goodie, and you would expect the Texans to run, run, run with Banks in there, given that he's rusty and old. Errr...wrong. I expect the Texans to open up their passing attack this week,. This DOESN'T make Banks a viable option, however, because I expect a good number of INTs this week, and if the Texans get too far behind they may make the switch to Ragone. Tony Banks - 180 yards passing, 1 TD, 2 INTs; 20 yards rushing, 0 TDs Dave Ragone - 80 yards passing, 0 TDs, 1 INT; 0 yards rushing, 0 TDs RB Domanick Davis is quickly becoming the Clinton Portis of 2003, and for good reason. This kid not only has speed and elusiveness...he also knows how to take a hit and not go down to get that few extra yards. His receiving skills out of the backfield are a huge plus as well. Mack is no longer seeing the goalline looks, either, so Davis is a bonafide starter. This week, however, he goes up against a very stout Carolina run D, so Davis' stats are almost solely going to come off of dumpoffs in the flats. I would be skeptical of starting Davis this week for that reason, unless you have no other option. Domanick Davis - 40 yards rushing, 0 TDs; 60 yards receiving, 0 TDs Stacey Mack - 10 yards rushing, 0 TDs; 0 yards receiving, 0 TDs Tony Hollings - 20 yards rushing, 0 TDs; 10 yards receiving, 0 TDs WR This group should be the beneficiary of the Texans' air attack this week. They have been silent the past couple of weeks against very solid pass D's, disappointing many fantasy owners. This week should make up for those weeks, however, as the Texans open up their offense to exploit the Carolina D. I would expect Billy Miller to get a fair share of those catches, as backup QB's tend to lean towards TE's as their emergency options. Andre Johnson - 7 catches, 100 yards, 0 TDs Jabar Gaffney - 3 catches, 30 yards, 0 TDs Corey Bradford - 2 catches, 50 yards, 0 TDs Billy Miller (TE) - 4 catches, 30 yards, 1 TD Overall I expect a dominating performance by Carolina, but not a huge blowout.... The Houston Chronicle reports that it is just a bruise and Davis has said that he will return next week. This causes some injury concerns for Davis owners, especially since he missed most of the preseason and a game earlier this year due to injury. If the KFFL reports are true (about a TORN pectoral muscle), this may be bad...but I personally think that KFFL misquoted the Chronicle.
