The Contra Costa Times is reporting that the Niners will offer restricted free-agent Kevan Barlow a one-year, $1.9 million contract.

The offer would require other teams to give the Niners a 1st and 3rd round pick if they were to sign Barlow.

This could get interesting. Barlow could certainly get more than $1.9 million in a deal with another team, but the loss of the draft picks would be huge.

A one year deal for $1.9 mil to your featured back? That doesn't make any sense to me. If I were the Pats GM I'd sign him up for long term & give SF a 1st & 3rd. If SF is serious about holding onto that guy they better start showing it.

The team certainly wants Barlow back, and Barlow wants to go back because he knows he'll be the featured back now....

But, Barlow is a prized commodity in the league and will demand a hefty salary. SF is in very bad shape with the salary cap (as is evident in those articles you posted above) and may not be able to match some of the offers made to Barlow.

Really, the issue is out of the Niners (and maybe even Barlow's) hands now. It will be incumbent upon the other teams in the NFL to decide if they can afford (not talking financially here) to give up those picks. If they can do that, the money they offer will certainly be enough enticement to Barlow to leave SF.

Could a team like Dallas afford to give up a first and a third round pick to get Barlow? All they really need on offense (if they choose to stick with Quincy Carter - which may still be determined by his play in the post-season) is a studly RB and some O-line help. This should be a nice year for O-linemen in the draft and a good one can still be had in the 2nd round. The Cowboys are solid on defense. The addition of Barlow would make them an instant Super Bowl contender. I don't know Dallas's cap situation; it may preclude them from getting involved, but they are a team in need of a good RB.

Ultimately I think it's better than 50/50 that Barlow will stick with the Niners, but don't be surprised if someone else makes a play for him.

Steg, you say this speculation is groundless, but I think it deserves some merit. I hope you're not just buying into the "I love SF and Dennis Erickson and they love me!" propaganda Barlow is spewing in the articles you referenced. We all know it comes down to the dollars.

THe 49ers are just positioning themselves at this point. No way they would end up giving him a one year contract. He could leave next year. That makes no sense. So, they win either way with a one year deal. They get on good terms with Barlow entering long term contract extension negotiations. OR, they position themselves to be able to trade him away for a first round pick, I doubt any NFL team would gfive up a 1st AND 3rd round pick. Ricky Williams who was a proven commodity went for a 1st and 2nd. Peerless Price went for a 1st. I guess ultimately the picks they would get depend on WHERE the other team drafts.

All I know.....as a Barlow owner....I am PSYCHED!!!!

I think quite simply, San Francisco just doesn't have enough money to keep Barlow.

TO isn't a sure lock of staying in San Francisco, and that may be the only thing that may entice Barlow to stay, if Owens leaves, he can become the 'star' of the team.

Well, I live in the Bay area, and I can tell you the local papers are saying TO is a lock to leave. They are concentrating on resigning Julian Peterson. I have not seen or read anything in the papers here in town about Kevan Barlow, but when I do, I'll let you know.

Yeah, the articles above seem to indicate that resigning Julian Peterson is their #1 priority. The only problem there is that Peterson has the same agent as Lavar Arrington (who just signed a monster contract).

They also have an "in-faith" agreement with Jeff Garcia and his agent that Garcia will restructure his contract. He is apparently due close to $10 million in 2004 and the Niners have no intention of paying that much.

Anyway, thanks for keeping an eye on the Barlow sitch for us BW. It bears watching as Barlow could be a very important RB next season.

I too think they will tag TO then deal him for cap reasons. Too bad.
Barlow is clearly ready to take over.
Peterson and Garcia will be resigned.

I also see Rice going back to SF for his swan song, then retiring after 2004 season IF Owens leaves.

Barlow gets a new contract. 5 years with an 8 million signing bonus. Looks like he is finally the man out there. The deal could be worth as much as $20 million over course of 5 years (with incentives). This is good news for Barlow owners!!
