Title: Giants Offseason Report Post by BarnabyWilde on Mar 5th, 2004, 6:39pm Giants sign Eagles LB Carlos Emmons. It's at least a start to signinng several players they are looking at... http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyg This is from bigblueinteractive.com Today's Free Agent Update – Coleman, Haggans, and Nesbit Signed?: BigBlueInteractive.com is hearing from a few sources that tentative deals may have been finalized between the Giants and unrestricted free agents DT Rod Coleman (Raiders) and LB Clark Haggans (Steelers). However, we have not received any definitive confirmation and thus the signing of these two remains speculative at this point. The Star-Ledger reports that a source "close to the situation" said Coleman's visit to the Giants went well and that Coleman is very interested in the Giants. Publicly, Coleman is said to be committed to visiting the Falcons before making any decision. The agent for Haggans also said his visit went extremely well. "He enjoyed meeting with everyone out there and liked the way they would theoretically use him," said Haggan's agent. Publicly, Haggans is said to be visiting the Lions next before making any decision. ESPN is reporting that Haggans is receiving serious interest from the Giants, Lions, and Steelers and that his value has soared into the $2 million per year range. ESPN says Haggans will make his decision today. A Jacksonville radio station and Jacksonville.com are reporting that the Giants have signed unrestricted free agent OG/OC Jamar Nesbit (Jaguars). The 28-year old Nesbit is 6-4 and 330lbs. He was a primary back-up for the Jaguars in 2003. From 1999-2002, Nesbit played for the Panthers, where he started. Meanwhile, unrestricted free agent SLB Carlos Emmons (Eagles) visited the Giants yesterday and The Ledger speculates that Emmons is one of the Giants' most wanted free agent targets. Emmons will undergo a physical from the Giants today (Emmons broke his left fibula in December). The Eagles, Saints, and Steelers are also pursuing Emmons. Unrestricted free agents DT Fred Robbins (Vikings), DT Steve Martin (Texans), OG Mike Goff (Bengals), and CB William Bartee (Chiefs) also arrived at Giants Stadium yesterday. Robbins' agent says the level of mutual interest between Robbins and the Giants is "high". According to Martin's agent, the Texans are making a late push to re-sign Martin by raising their offer to him. OC Rich Braham (Bengals) is scheduled to visit the Giants today. S Rich Coady (Rams) is scheduled to visit next week. The New York Post reports that while Braham is visiting, it is the 28-year old Goff who the Giants have higher on their wish list. The Post says the Giants are interested in converting Goff, who played right guard with the Bengals, into a center. There was one internet report that said the Giants may also be interested in DE Bert Berry (Broncos). The Denver press speculates that LB Ian Gold (Broncos) may also be of interest to the Giants. |

Title: Re: Giants Offseason Report Post by DOLFAN on Mar 7th, 2004, 11:31pm The Giants aren't getting the big name guys, but are filling there whole rather well. They still have a wasy to go before they get back to a SB team, or playoff team for that matter. I see them bringing up the rear in the NFC East this year. |

Title: Re: Giants Offseason Report Post by BarnabyWilde on Mar 10th, 2004, 9:55pm I don't know really....Jones thinks he is better than he really is. Mr. air guitar after every tackle. ::) He is speedy for sure. Emmons is less flashy, but a better tackler I think. Maybe the change of scenery will do both of them good and they both play well. |

Title: Re: Giants Offseason Report Post by Philly on Mar 10th, 2004, 10:03pm The thing I noticed about Emmons was that you never noticed him... at least until he was injured. He is very solid and does his job well. I think he should be able to come back from his broken leg without any problems. He is a bit bigger than Jones, yet has enough speed to shut down the TEs and RBs coming out of the backfield. |

Title: Re: Giants Offseason Report Post by BarnabyWilde on Mar 10th, 2004, 10:29pm The knock on all three departed LB's were that none of them were good in pass coverage. Barrett Green and Emmons are better vs. the pass then the three ex backers were. I have heard rumors the Giants will hand the job to one of their your guys already on the team (Nick Greisen) or draft a rookie in the second or third round in this year's draft. |

Title: Re: Giants Offseason Report Post by Callie on Apr 8th, 2004, 8:17pm Any time, Crash. Thanks for the thanks! Lookin' forward to your info!!!! And here's what All Sorts Sports says about the Giants/Manning thing: "8 April, 2004 Giants (NJ.com) The Giants' intentions in the April 24 draft might no longer be much of a secret. They hold the fourth overall pick and general manager Ernie Accorsi called Chargers general manager A.J. Smith two days ago to ask the cost of trading up to the No. 1 spot. Can you say "Eli Manning?" "I've also spoken to another club ahead of us and one behind us," Accorsi said last night. "We're exploring our options. I've said that we'd explore our options from the beginning, from moving up to moving down to staying where we are." The Giants aren't about to divulge any draft-room secrets. Yet the latest round of speculation was actually supplied by Smith, who told the Associated Press yesterday: "(The Giants) would like to move from four to one. Anything we discuss (beyond that) is football business between the two of us." Of course, just the public acknowledgment of their trade discussion by Smith and Accorsi may be proof in itself that nothing is on the front-burner. But should they make a deal, there is little doubt that Manning is the Giants' man. They love Iowa left tackle Robert Gallery, too, but not No. 1 overall. Meanwhile, the Giants continued to be active in free agency yesterday, adding a big run-stuffer -- emphasis on "big" -- in signing defensive tackle Norman Hand to a two-year, $2-million contract." Wait-and-see time of the year..... |

About.com: Football (12.04.2004 07:35) Reports surfaced over the weekend that the New York Giants have contacted the San Diego Chargers about acquiring the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, presumably with the intent of selecting Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning. Title: Re: Giants Offseason Report Post by The Juror on Apr 13th, 2004, 7:41pm I am a huge Giants Fan, (hence the LT picture), but I think the Giants really want Gallery, but are afraid that he will not be there at 4. I tend to think that Gallery is a very solid pick and the QB, whomever it is, needs the protection to do anything. I know I am stating the obvious, but I think the Giants will do fine with Collins and can win with him at the helm. Go for the lineman. [smiley=shrug.gif] |

Title: Re: Giants Offseason Report Post by Callie on Apr 14th, 2004, 8:21pm This thing is a lot of fun for me. Here's what All Sorts Sports said today: "14 April, 2004 Chargers (The Union-Tribune) Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith has said repeatedly that he won't seriously consider trade offers for the top pick in this month's NFL draft until tomorrow at the earliest. Still, the pervasive opinion among many league observers is that Smith wants to unload the selection. The opinions are based not only on the Chargers having numerous holes to fill after an eighth consecutive non-winning season, but also on the fact that the team mass e-mailed writers and reporters last week after the New York Giants inquired about possibly dealing for the choice. It's almost unheard of for a club to post such information on its Web site, let alone do a mass mailing to reporters about it. A lot of people took that to mean that the Chargers are desperate to stir up interest in the pick, then unload it to the highest bidder. However, after further review, a trade seems less likely with each passing day. The reason is Iowa offensive tackle Robert Gallery. Two well-placed sources said recently that there is no chance of Gallery slipping past the second pick, where he would be taken by the Oakland Raiders or a team that trades with them, possibly Cleveland or Washington. If true, that almost forces the Chargers to stay at No. 1. The Chargers' two biggest needs are offensive tackle and quarterback, in that order. If Gallery goes second overall as expected, trading down could cost the Chargers not only the top-rated offensive linemen, but also top-rated quarterback Eli Manning of Mississippi, who is projected to go first overall. At this point, things are playing out in such a fashion that they likely will stay put and take Manning." |

Title: Re: Giants Offseason Report Post by Callie on May 6th, 2004, 7:05pm From Kurt Warner's agent about the Giants: "It's a team that is looking for a quarterback," Bartelstein said. "We've certainly talked to them. Whether it will lead to anything is hard to say. The Giants are one of the teams I've had ongoing conversations with regarding Kurt's situation. They just drafted a quarterback who is going to be their franchise quarterback, there is no question about that. Kurt understands that. He understands you're not going to find the perfect situation in May or June." IMHO - They need a guy to cover the first half of the season, at least, until Eli is ready. At this point, it's probably Kurt's best hope to start. |

Factoring in age, Gannon makes the most sense because he is near the end of a long career and would not likely stand in Manning's way for long. Neither Gannon nor Johnson is a free agent, but recently released QB Kerry Collins could land in Oakland, and that would make Gannon expendable. The Giants will wait to see which quarterbacks become free agents after June 1, when the on-the-book bonus money can be spread over two years." |

He may have improved the lines, but they are still weak spots for the team. I would hardly consider the lines deep. On offense, Petitgout is an average LT, the LG (Barry Stokes) is nothing special. Center Shaun O'Hara came from the same weak Cleveland O-line as Stokes. Chris Snee is a rookie who will probably start at RG (and if not, David Diehl is certainly nothing to write home about) and Ian Allen (who?) is the RT. As for the depth? Wayne Lucier and Rich Seubert? I'd still be worried if I was a Giants fan. On defense, Strahan can still get it done at DE, but he's getting older and doesn't seem happy with the new administration. Osi Umenyiora will be the other DE. He didn't show much last year and is still undersized. Fred Robbins (who struggled in Minnesota despite playing next to Chris Hovan) will team with William Joseph (who had an unimpressive rookie year for a first-round pick) at DT. Granted Norman Hand and Keith Washington add some good depth and experience (and a lot of age) off the bench, but the D-line still doesn't inspire much fear (outside of Strahan) in the hearts of offensive coordinators. |

Title: Re: Giants Offseason Report Post by Philly on May 21st, 2004, 2:48pm You have one stud on your offensive AND defensive lines... total. The Eagles have (possibly) the best safety in football in Brian Dawkins. They have one of the best young safeties in Michael Lewis. Their two young corners played well last year when Taylor and Vincent missed lots of time and they had a free-agent saftey who played very well while Dawkins was out. The Eagles drafted a Taylor-like corner in Matt Ware in the 3rd round of the draft, plus they'll bring in a veteran CB to play the nickel. Also, they had no pass rush with all their injuries last year -- they will this year. So, I feel much more confident with the Eagles secondary than I do with either of the Giants lines... of course Las Vegas agrees with me too. The Eagles are the favorite in the NFC to get to the Super Bowl. Smart bettors are staying away from the Giants. |

Title: Re: Giants Offseason Report Post by BarnabyWilde on May 28th, 2004, 12:52pm Giants sign Steelers saftey Brent Alexander, shoring up another weak spot (free safety) http://www.giants.com/news/index.cfm?cont_id=244305&right_include=/includes/eisens_archive_module.cfm Contrary to what my fine feathered fried suggests, the giants have shored up many of their weak spots from last year, adding a ton of depth on both lines. As many of you know, you don't have to have five all pro linemen to have a solid offensive line. And, if you have several solid defensive linemen to set up a decent rotation, you have fresh guys at the end of games. They have added tremendous depth to their D-line (Norman Hand, Lorenzo Bromell, Martin Chase, Fred Robbins, Glen Steele) which was a huge problem last year- especially against the run. These signings to go with Keith Washington, Lance Legree, Michael Strahan, William Joseph, and Osi Umenyiora should provide a very very solid rotation. The signings of Barry Stokes, Sean O'Hara, and Ed Ellis should provide huge depth and versatility on the offensive side. Luke Petitgout and Rich Seubert should hopefully be recovered from injuries and rookie Chris Snee should step in and start immediately. Diehl, Petitgout, O'Hara, and Snee should be very solid starters. Hopefully Seubert can return healthy and man the fifth spot. In reality, none of this really matters if the start a rookie QB...so we'll see if all of that off season work to shore up the team is for naught. |

(Not to mention that his teammates weren't all that thrilled about his arrival and the subsequent ouster of Kerry Collins.) Well, their defensive line won't be too bad, but it's still nothing more than average. Anyway, things seem pretty happy in Eagle-land. Everyone is getting along. None of the coaches are breaking mini-camp rules. None of the player reps are tattling on their new head coach. Yeah, I can see how you'd be more optimistic as a Giants fan than an Eagles fan... |

According to you it is. Just because the Eagles are in a better situation the the Giants are right now doesn't mean that will stay that way. So go ahead and poke fun now while you can. I'll sit back and watch Eli and the boys take their lumps this year without saying one word, just like I'll watch T.O. play the entire year without complaining. ::) I just thought you were a bit more classier than that.
