Title: Packers Offseason Report
Post by StegRock on Mar 26th, 2004, 5:43pm
This has been a fairly quiet offseason in Packerland.  Here's a little something interesting to chew on coming out of "the Gridiron Newsstand" and "The REAL Feed":

Brett's backup? Packers interested in Couch
ESPN: NFL (26.03.2004 16:26)
.

Here are ALL the LOCAL reports from both Wisconsin and Ohio, i.e. from both sides, on it:

Here's the latest from "the Gridiron Newsstand" and "The REAL Feed" on the Couch-to-the-Packers deal that has been brewing for some time now; there are somewhat mixed signals coming out of Green Bay according to these reports:

Browns' Couch wants to play for Pack (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/football/nfl/04/08/bc.fbn.packers.couch.ap/index.html)
SI.com: NFL (09.04.2004 14:35)

Any thoughts?

I think if they can get Couch to restructure his contract (a lot), and Couch is willing to be the #2 guy for another year or two, then it is a great move for both of them.

This, currently topping "The REAL Feed", I thought was well worth posting:

Favre downplays Couch (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/football/nfl/04/29/bc.fbn.packers.favre.ap/index.html)
SI.com: NFL (29.04.2004 15:53)

Hmmmm...  Are Brett's panties a little ruffled here? [smiley=hmmmm.gif]

it was much ado about nothing.  They didn't need him:  they have Pedersen and Nall.  Now that Ped has re-signed, they can continue to bring Nall along slowly.  He's the next great QB for the Pack!!

I don't know you too well, so I'm not sure if you were saying that with any amount of sarcasm.  Craig Nall?  The guy will be lucky to be a #2 QB at some point in his career.

Its going to be so tough to replace Farve - what a GREAT QB. Look at all the other teams that have tried to replace stud QBs, Miami w/ Marino = Feeley?, Denver w/ Elway = Griese-Plummer experiment; Buff still looking for their Jim Kelly; San Diego still trying to find their Dan Fouts = Ryan Leaf wheres the beef? Hello Rivers (maybe)???; San Fran was extremely LUCKY to be able to replace Joe Montanna w/ Steve Young - therein lies your exception to the rule. I doubt anyone on the present day Green Bay's roster will be able to Step into Farve's shoes - just my 2 cents.

In substantive support of this assertion, from "The REAL Feed":

Packers' Nall frustrated with minicamp (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/football/nfl/05/03/bc.fbn.packersnotebook.ap/index.html)

Mike McKenzie continues to hold out, and Brett Favre continues to comment on it...

http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2004/06/04/1/

Quote:
"I mean, there are quarterbacks out there right now making more money than me. Whenever the peak of my career was -- I think it's now, but whenever it was -- there were guys making more money than me and there were guys doing more commercials and all that.

"Maybe I was just naive or didn't really give a damn, but it never really concerned me. All I cared about was playing football ... And regardless of if someone else is making more money, I'm going to play like there's no tomorrow. And that's the business of this sport."
--Brett Favre

Amen to that!   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Thats exactly why this guy is the best. Its his intangibles : his spirit, his endurance, his pride & integrity in what he does, his abaility to sacrifice his "own" for the better of the "team", its absolutely unmatched in this day and age.

UnBEE-Lievable!

Currently atop "The REAL Feed"...

Sources: Couch, Packers agree to 1-year deal

Green Bay reportedly will pay $1M-plusIt took more than two months, hours of discussions and, finally, his release by the Cleveland Browns last week, but quarterback Tim Couch is finally headed to Green Bay. League sources confirmed Monday evening that Couch, released Friday afternoon by the Brow...

You knew this would come to fruition. I hope Couch can have some better luck in Green Bay learning from one of the great ones in Favre.

I think this is a great fit for both Couch and GreenBay.

Long term,  I think Couch has a good chance to be their QB of the future.

Short term, it makes sense for both sides.  Couch gets to learn from Farvre, he can rejuvinate his ego, and he can learn the system.

The Packers get a major upgrade over Pederson, a potential QB of the future, and will be more likely to rest Farvre if needed.

I thing this is a dubious signing.  Couch better check his ego in at the door.  It's no coincidence his # is half that of Favre's:  he's half the QB.  Question is:  who goes?  I think Nall has a lot of promise.  He was MVP in NFLEL.  You guys stateside probably don't realise how competitive that league is.  Still, it's all academic:  by the time Favre retires, Couch will be an old man, and probably on his thirteenth NFL team.

I think this is a good signing for the Pack.  Solid backup in case anything should prevent Favre from starting (kryptonite, perhaps?).  But long term?  C'mon, I don't see Favre retiring any time soon.  The guy is still really productive and is helping the team.  Couch isn't a rookie either, he's, what, 27 or 28?  By the time he gets to start in GB he will be over 30.

Competitive? Yes. NFL competitive? No. There is a HUGE difference in Game speed between the 2. ;)

Couch isn't done just yet.

Javon may be "the (go-to) man", but don't count Fergy out of the fold just yet, actually for awhile.  From "The REAL Feed":

Packers lock up Ferguson
The Sports Network: NFL (30.06.2004 23:46)

FERGUSON PENS PACKERS EXTENSION
Sporting Life: NFL (30.06.2004 07:34)
The Green Bay Packers have signed receiver Robert Ferguson to a multi-year contract extension.

The LOCAL sources on "the Gridiron Newsstand" are buzzing:

http://www.greenbaynewschron.com/packers/page.html?article=126483;

http://www.packersnews.com/archives/news/pack_16720595.shtml;

(AP report)
http://www.madison.com/captimes/sports/packers/77387.php.

I, for one, still like Ferguson to be a decent fantasy receiver someday... a #2, #3 or at least a solid reserve.

"Preseason" news not big enough to merit its own thread, BUT worth reporting...

... From "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Couch still lacking luster -

Green dinged up with a nagging sore foot -

Yes Tim Couch looked horrible.  Not too impressive.  Even worse for someone who just protected him in a keeper league.   >:(

However, he has been battling injury and I think it was showing.  He had a WR wide open in the flat and couldn't even get the ball to him.  His forearm injury was clearly showing.  It is only preseason.  I am not too concerned about Couch's performance at this point.

They don't need Couch till about week 6.  He should be healthier by then. ;)

Ahman Green bruised his knee during the preseason game against the Jags...

Not believed to be too serious.

Updates indicate that he is fine... he could have returned to the game that night.  He's still a top 4 pick in my mind.
