Title: Falcons Offseason Report
Post by StegRock on Apr 1st, 2004, 2:17pm
Well, this is surely not the most scintillating nor is it the most breaking of news, but I thought it became somewhat intriguing as I continued to dig.  When I saw this on "The REAL Feed" today,...

Falcons sign Detmer as BACKUP to Vick
SI.com: NFL (01.04.2004 12:59)

I thought to myself, "Aren't they jumping from the frying pan into the fire?"  I was thinkin', "April Fool's, Ty!" [smiley=sinister.gif]

Here is a further report on his signing from the Falcons official site available on "the Gridiron Newsstand":

http://www.atlantafalcons.com/team/007/451/.

I mean I've always liked Ty from his BYU days, but, with regards to his professional career, it IS hard to be a Ty apologist.

Then, I read this local report from "the Gridiron Newsstand"... and all seemed to make sense again:

http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/mld/ledgerenquirer/sports/football/nfl/atlanta_falcons/8325541.htm.

They're still on the hunt!

Could Dez White become a factor?  If Peerless Price turns out to be the "true" #2 many think he is, maybe Dez White could surprise this year, no?

No.  Dez White is a used-to-be and never-has-been.

I.e., he'll be my 12th-round sleeper pick. [smiley=hellyeafunny.gif]

The Falcons seem to be very impressed with White and his skills.  Apparently he has picked up the offense quickly and runs really precise routes.  This is very important with the new WCO offense that the Falcons are putting in.  (However, I think that a new offense will limit them initially until they learn the nuances of the new system.)

I think White could surprise this season.  Price is clearly the #1 (even though he may not be best-suited for that designation), Finneran will become the McCaffrey who makes that big third-down catch or grabs the fade pass in the corner of the endzone... Jenkins will be the wild-card here.  If he progresses quickly (and Falcons seem impressed already), it will be hard to keep him off the field.

And just to follow this through a little more - even thogh I have heard to the contrary - Duckett will be the RB that gets the show. He will keep Vick healthy this season by grinding it out on the ground more so than usual. I would be surprised if Ducklettes didn't get 1000 yds rushing.

I disagree.  Dunn is the more explosive back and he's 90% healthy at this point in time.

I see Duckett being more of a goalline and short yardage back.

Uh, Trung Canidate is also an explosive back. Lot of good that did him trying to get through the trench mess.

Dunn can NOT handle the "feature" back position - and 90% healthy means he is already one level down in that department - that being - wear and tear punching through the bog bodies.

The NIGHTMARE the falcons went rhough last season with VICK getting injured - I assure you - they don't want to see that again.
Duckett will take that load from Vick. Dunn doesn't have the tooughness/durability to handle something like that.

So although I respect your opinion and THOUIGH it may seem to BEE the popular one around the FF worlds of opinions, - I am going out on a limb here to say differently and my rationale is sound as to why I think that way.

HOT off "The REAL Feed":

Vick pulls up lame in practice vs. Titans (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1853056&CMP=OTC-DT9705204233)
ESPN: NFL (05.08.2004 22:09)
Vick tweaks same leg he broke last yearNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick pulled up limping after running into the end zone and grabbed the back of his right leg Thursday in a practice with the Tennessee Titans.Vick made a sharp cut off his left leg and faked out Titans ...

This definitely has to be of at least some concern.  Nothing else out there yet except the AP report.

More on Vick's sore hammy from off "The REAL Feed":

Hammy's have a way of lingering... and given Vick's style of play, shall we commence being concerned?

I actually thought the Falcons could be a sleeper defense this year.  They've still got some big play guys, and the addition of DeAngelo Hall was gravy.  With Jim Mora as the new head coach, I figured they would make big strides from their poor 2003 performance.  If I recall correctly, they had a nice defensive unit in 2002.

It is still the first quater and from what ive seen michael vick has been spetacular...if your a redskins fan....

and the pick turned into a field goal.....
